I like these hiking shoes but you need to be very careful when walking on wet surfaces especially metal and stone. These soles are NOT vibram.

I own several Merrells. I love the brand and sturdiness so it was an obvious choice for a hiking trip in late winter. They are waterproof and easy to clean muddy snow slush while keeping my feet dry. The support is as expected from Merrell. Soles had good grip for trails in Utah. I used woolen socks and they did feel tighter than others for some reason but I was able to get used to them. They were medium width but wide would probably be too roomy. No problems with the hikes, but using them indoors a few months later, one of the shoelace leather (?) hoop completely ripped off. These shoes don’t have a backup loop so even tying them in different hoops -because the middle flap is so wide- is useless. The length of the shoelace is a bit on the short side for creative tying, on top of that. I think they need to stick to the cloth type of loop or even the old fashioned holes as a backup. The leather is a nice aesthetic touch but if they break while you’re hiking, you’re in for a barefoot or extremely uncomfortable walk. I contacted Merrell today and will update if I get a replacement, but I can’t recommend these shoes if you won’t bring a spare. ** update ** I was able to contact and obtain a replacement from Merrell. They are particular about getting you to submit a code for the shoes you pick which is so tiny it’s hard to read but other than that, got a different that doesn’t present the old problem. I bought this after having had my current Merrell's for quite some time and found them extremely comfortable to walk/hike in. Some shoe brands like Adidas don't give my feet that same level of comfort as Merrell's. I actually stumbled upon Merrell's while I was visiting Colorado and needed some shoes, the only ones available were these and would not go back. At first, the shoes were a little stiff from my old worn in ones, but can confidently say they are very comfortable and will be great in the long run. When I saw they were waterproof, I was thinking, I didn't really need that feature, but I've actually had 2 encounters where I had to cross streams that were overflowing and they did in fact keep my feet dry. The water came up to my ankle pretty much and my feet were dry. It would have been disappointing for my hike to have wet feet since it was the beginning of my journey. That said, I highly recommend these shoes to anyone who seeks a comfortable shoe for walking or hiking. ... show more

The stitching was not right on the tongue of this shoe. It also is not sized correctly. I had ordered N 8 from DSW, they were only slightly small, ordered an 8.5 here and this is even smaller. I’m wondering if these are seconds. They are going back. I love Merrells, just not from this seller.
