  • Crazy uncomfortable heel stitch!!!
Okay, I REALLY wanted to like these shoes. I’ma huge Merrell fan, I’ve had several great pairs from them before, and I got these for a great price here on the ‘zon. BUT, I just can’t give them more than a single star. I bought these for a cross country move (Florida -> Washington State) in January. There are VERY waterproof and snow proof. However, there is a seam line/stitch line that sits directly behind my heel that is LITERALLY TORTURE. I’ve never had a hiking shoe (Keen, Salomon, Merrell, etc) or running shoe (Nike, Brooks, Adidas, Rebok, Saucony, etc) that ever placed a protruding stitch right in the pressure point area of the heel cup. It’s absolutely the most uncomfortable shoe I’ve ever worn that fit me properly in every other way. Hands down. Huge lose. Can’t say how much lose this is. Both heels are bruised from this stitch and I’ve only done about 2000 miles of driving (1000 to go). These are my only waterproof shoes so I’m forced to wear them. I have a pair of Salomon Xa 3D pro shoes with quick lace (also bought here on Amazon) that are VASTLY more comfortable and I’ve actually elected to allow my feet to get wet just so I didn’t have that heel stitch pressing into both feet. It doesn’t appear to be a defect and the insoles have great comfort. The outsoles have great grip. They even look great. But they’re getting trash binned as soon as my move through winter weather is done. I’ve owned them for just over a week. I received them just prior to my move and could not return them. So I’ve used them a lot. And this means that whatever break in period existed is just gone (the rest of the shoe is actually very comfortable). Huge swing and miss from Merrell. To be fully honest, If I could return these, I would go but the gore tex version of my Salomons. ... show more

  • Frankly Disppointed
Size: 12.5 Color: Granite
I walk the woods and hills of Northern Virginia a lot and needed a new pair of Merrells. It rains a bit here in the Autumn so these seemed like a good solid shoe. I bought them size larger than usual since my feet swell sometimes with a lot of walking. They are so unflexible, heavy and hot to wear. There's no bend in them at all. Couple that with the weight and it feels like wearing Frankenstein's shoes!. I had more of a sneaker style last time I bought them and they would flex over rocks. These are so stiff, they do not bend with rocks underneath and it's easy to see how you could turn your ankle badly by slipping. Disappointed and STILL looking for the right shoe! ... show more

  • The shoe laces automatically untie
Size: 10 Color: Boulder
I do a lot of walking every day (about 1000 miles per year) and usually wear these shoes. This is a very nice looking shoe (as are the similar boots) and people will be impressed with the appearance. Unfortunately, there is a major problem with these shoes. After a month or two you will notice that the shoe laces do not stay tied. The shoe laces seem to be made of out some sort of Teflon-like material with a decorative appearance on the outside. After some use, the decorative material wears away and all that is left is a shoe lace which unties itself. You may be just sitting in a chair not moving for hours but you get up to walk somewhere and find that the triple knot that you labored over is still tied, but somehow there is now over an inch of slack and the shoes are very loose. The soles of the shoes last about six months for me. The hard material wears down gradually, especially in the heel area. I find that the sole of the shoe is slippery on granite rocks and particularly if the rocks are wet. ... show more

  • Not the company they used to be
Size: 12 Wide Color: Boulder
I’ve been wearing Merrells for years. I bought this pair and they fit significantly smaller than shoes I’ve had in the past of the same size. I contacted customer service at Merrell and they said they would swap the shoes out. However, when I submitted the claim I got a song and dance from the returns department and they would not return the shoes even though they were in as new condition and just offered me a coupon to go buy more shoes to replace the brand new shoes which don’t fit. Unfortunately, it would appear that Merrell, as so many other companies in the Covid era have changed and they no longer stand behind their products like they used to. Sorry to say that after years of loyalty, I will be switching to another brand. ... show more

  • LOVE MERRELL BOOTS BUT NOT THESE HIKERS
Size: 10.5 Wide Color: Beluga
I have Merrell Work Boots and Hiking Boots. My Wife and Daughter both have Hiking Boots based on my reco. They are all very comfortable and fit great. I bought 2 different sizes of these Hiking Shoes just to walk a local gravel trail that can have standing water or swampy parts after rains. In both the size that fits me with other Merrells, and a half size small, my heel comes out of these even though the length and width are good. I think the issue is that the Merrell comfort in the heel comes from a nice thick insert which unfortunately pushes my heel too far up in these sneaker-style hiking shoes. . . .it's a blister waiting to happen . . . my heel will just not stay put. ... show more

  • Not up to previous Moab expectations
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Beluga
Purchased this pair for a trip to Iceland with the reasoning that having water proof construction would be all I needed. Well, the shoe itself is only okay at repelling water. A few mild hikes across streams were fine but a day hike in light rain was too much. Water began to seep into the shoe after about an hour of hiking in the rain and there was nothing I could do to keep them dry. Made for an uncomfortable day. Other issues I had was that these simply are not as comfortable as the identical Moab 2 vents I have. The ball of my foot ached frequently hiking in rocky terrain and left me wishing I had the other pair. Another minor nag was that the construction around the heel is not as sturdy as expected. The foam innards around the achilles got folded up and would not return to its original position. All these comments are basically because I had so many issues compared to my moab 2 vents which are my favorite shoes. These just were not what I expected. ... show more
