Best fitting Merrel Moab 2 shoes are made in Vietnam, though even these are a bit variable in size. Those made in China (the two I returned) are way too variable in size to be reliably ordered online. I returned 2 pairs of these shoes (China origin) because they were simply a different size than the past two pair I have had over the years. Just as a sanity check: I ordered a different pair of older used shoes that were barely worn, and they fit like they should. So something happened in construction in the past two years. Blame it on the pandemic, like everything else. I finally will keep these--they are comfortable enough, with a thin sole insert. They still tend to run a bit large by about a 1/2 size, but when I ordered larger, they were HUGE (though not from this vendor). Decent quality, but all I ordered are clearly not the same level of quality as my older pairs from same company. Why keep getting these? Because my old pairs were excellent, fitting like a glove and taking a long time to wear out. I hope to get another pair like that, maybe this is the set that does it.

UPDATE 200 miles I was just going to return these shoes. They were so disappointing, but then it started snowing and my other hiking shoes slipped a lot and I noticed these had Vibram soles so I thought I’d give them another try. I wore heavier Darn Tough full-cushion socks and that seemed to really help the fit. I’ve worn them every day for the past month through snow, freezing rain, and ice and they’ve been pretty comfortable, warm, and stable. The one thing I did notice was that the tread isn’t that aggressive so they do tend to slip a little on the snow and ice, but going up or down hill on packed or icy snow they’re really grippy and stable. Certainly not a technical shoe, but a nice bonus for winter hills. I’ve changed my recommendation to I would buy again, especially at the $80 or so price point. They’re a good value. ———————————————————————————————————————————————- Needed mixed terrain hiking shoes for fall/winter. I walk 5-7 miles a day in all weather. These shoes were recommended by local REI but they didn’t have my size. This is my experience after a couple of hikes (20 miles total). Normally I’d update after 200 miles, but I don’t think I’ll be using them that much. Pros: Comfortable out of the box. Mildly aggressive tread for secure stride. Good on frozen slush, packed snow, wet pavement. Cons: Heavy. Tiring to walk in. After a few miles every step was a chore, especially on pavement or dry flat trails. Best use: Short winter walks in rain or snow. Or maybe snow blowing the driveway. Recommended: No, would not buy again. If you want a shoe that *looks* like a hiking shoe and you want to walk the dog for a few blocks in the rain/snow then you might want to consider this shoe. If you walk any farther than that, there are better options.

My husband does construction and hates wearing boots during the hot summer months, got him these and he loves them. They protect his feet but are less heavy than his heavy duty boots. He said he will definitely be getting another pair to have on hand for next summer.
