  • My default boot
Size: 10 Wide Color: Earth
I bought 5 pairs so far. I like hiking and I work quite a bit in the woods and my yard. I am often working on a slope and since I am a heavy guy, I put a lot of strain on the boots. I also step into puddles not to widen trails and create larger mud patches, and I fight invasive plants alongside creeks and often step into water. All that said the boots are holding up much better than any other brands that I owned. I always keep a new pair and an old pair around to have two pairs that are broken in (actually these boots don't need break in with my feet, so it's more testing, making sure the form hasn't changed since the last pair). The only weak spot are those compound lug soles. I like Vibram since it's indestructible but I see the benefit of combining a hard polymer with a softer polymer to create better grip on rocks. At some point the outside parts of the soles delaminate, come loose and not much later the profile is usually reduced enough to make the boots unsafe on rocks. I get about ~1 year of hard use out of the boot. ... show more

  • Wow! Who knew?
Size: 12.5 Color: Earth
I have only had running shoes and combat boots for use outside of the office. Neither is really the best match for hitting the trail for nature photography, which I do a lot now. I had never heard of Merrell but, what great boots. I chose these after a lot of research and you can believe all the strongly positive reviews of these boots. ... show more

  • Great boot
Size: 10 Color: Olive/Orange
I had to replace the insoles with something better. The boot runs a tad bit small. Very comfortable from the start

  • Not Too Bad, Could Be Improved
Size: 13 Wide Color: Earth
These boots are pretty good for the price. It took me a while to warm up to them but, after a couple of modifications, they have become one of favorite pair of boots along with my Rocky "outback" boots. Probably the biggest thing I didn't like about these boots when I got them was that the factory insoles they put in them have an arch support that hit right on a bone spur in my left foot making it very uncomfortable to wear for longer periods. Also the lacing system tends to bind too tightly around the arthritic instep of my left foot and ankle. I compensate for this by leaving enough slack in the lacing so that my foot doesn't get too constricted as it swells throughout the day. I also noticed that the thin rubber on the toe cap got ripped up and punctured easily by stray sticks and thorns when I wore them in the woods for the first time. If I had "normal" feet and I planned to spend most of my time outdoors cruising groomed trails I suppose they would have worked out fine but I found that I needed to modify them in order to get them better fit my needs. The first thing I did was replace the factory insoles with Dr. Scholls "plantar fasciitis" insoles. These have a less aggressive arch support that doesn't wear on my bone spurs and a little more padding. They weigh a little more than the factory insoles but, for what I gain in comfort vs the small increase in weight I've found this "upgrade" to be well worth it. The other mod I found necessary to improve the durability of these boots was to repair the torn rubber on the toe caps with super glue, then add a couple layers of "boot guard" paint on, rubber toe cap protector. It's basically a small container of textured truck bed liner-like material. It added just enough extra thickness to prevent the toes from being ripped to shreds while walking through actual woods rather than trails. With these two mods these boots have met my expectations as lightweight, medium duty outdoor/work boots. I don't wear them hunting because the eyelets have some kind of reflective material woven into them. I don't know if animals can see it but, since I hunt for food rather than for sport, I don't like to leave it to chance that I might spook an animal because my boots gave me away. I mainly wear these boots camping and light bushcrafting in more civilised areas, mowing yards and hiking local nature preserves. (The fact that they are fairly lightweight and grippy in wet conditions makes them great for that.) I have a very hard time finding boots that are wide enough and have enough room in the toe box to keep my toes from forming painful corns on them. Most footwear manufacturers' "wide" sizing is not wide enough for my foot. I appreciate that Merrell makes their wide boots in an actual wide width with plenty of room in the toe box for those of us with Fred Flintstone feet. These boots boots would not, IMHO be suitable for, scouting and bushwhacking off the trail, or doing heavy work like digging, tree removal or any kind of work where the toes might be the site of excessive wear like carpentry or tile/flooring work. I have worn them while doing small tree removals for clients that asked after I was done mowing. They survived after beefing up the toe caps but I would not expect them to last long if I worked as a professional arborist. They are fairly waterpoof in that they keep your feet dry walking through dewy grass or crossing very shallow streams but I wouldn't expect miracles. The trade off is that breathability is better with these boots than with boots that have greater degree of waterproofness. Still, on very hot days, even wearing thin cotton socks, I find it advantageous to have a couple extra pairs of dry socks on hand and to go heavy with the foot powder. If Merrell would make the insoles with a bit less aggressive arch support and add maybe a couple mils thickness to the rubber on the toes I would recommend these boots to anyone without hesitation. ... show more

  • Merrell's are very good boots at a good price on sale.
Size: 10.5 Wide Color: Earth
These are the mid-height version of the Merrell MOAB2 waterproof hiking shoe. As such, I expect almost one year of use before the upper separates from the sole. These don't hug the ankle like another pair of mid height Merrell boots I have, but they are comfortable, grip the ground very well and are very lightweight. ... show more
