  • Very Dissapointed. Soles came unglued within 2 months.
Purchased this boot as a longtime purchaser of the Merrell MOABs. The low Gore-Tex shoe has been my go-to footwear for the past 5 years or so. Took the leap for the MOAB 2 and got the mid height Gore-Tex. From day one, the shoes were supremely comfortable. Absolutely no break-in required, great support and fit me perfectly. However, after just about 2 months into owning the shoes, some issues have cropped up. I have given these boots a 2 star rating despite how well they fit and perform because the outsole is rapidly becoming unglued from the boot. It starts at the heel and progresses forward. I am in contact with Merrell customer support and how they handle this will determine whether or not I stay with their brand. Alex Update! Merrell replaced the boots, but now the replacements are delaminating as well inside a month. Extremely disappointed in Merrell quality. I will no longer be purchasing Merrell footwear. ... show more

  • Boot probably OK, but Amazon or the seller shipped a damaged product.
Size: 9.5 Color: Earth
The initial order was size 9, which are my other Merrell shoe sizes. They were too small, with my big toe touching the interior at the end. Worn only on carpet and only long enough to determine the fit was bad, I repacked them with the cardboard shoe trees and laces exactly at they arrived and submitted those for a return. I then ordered size 9.5 at the same price. Those boots arrived obviously not new and damaged: 1. Both soles showed rock dust embedded in cracks. 2. The right sole near the toe showed obvious abrasion damage on one of the "studs". Hello, let's try these out on rocks to see how they work... 3. The cardboard shoe trees were both missing. 4. The laces were untied. 5. The right lace was significantly damaged near the "hook", indicating poor tying or undue stress by a previous user. That lace won't last much longer. I wonder if sending out used goods in place of new goods after a return is a policy by Amazon or its sellers? I've no problem receiving an item that doesn't have wear-and-tear, but I'm not gong to accept an item that does as that is obviously what I paid for, obviously not "new." So I am returning the second order and found the re-order is price higher. Customers shouldn't have to pay a higher price when Amazon or one of its sellers ships a damaged product to begin with. ... show more

  • MOAB 2 GTX are waterproof Non GTX not so much
Size: 10.5 Color: Walnut
I have seen a lot of reviews of people saying the MOAB 2 boots are not waterproof. The GTX MOAB 2's have a Gore-Tex membrane sewn into the boot. They are waterproof up to about mid foot before water will seep inside. In other words don't step in deep puddles are deep streams. Non GTX MOAB's are not waterproof. Even if they claim to be. Gore-Tex IMO is the true measure of waterproofness. I have 3 pairs of these boots sitting here next to me. Two I have worn the Vibram sole down smooth the other is brand new. All 3 are the GTX model. The two worn boots I have wore the sole out before the boot. With Merrell you get what you pay for. I would not expect these boots to survive a through hike of the AT. People seem to think these boots are a heavy work boots. They are not. We are talking a mass produced boot that is under $200 bucks. There not even real leather. However as a walker or a moderate hiking boot they get the job done. Take mine for instance, I use mine as a daily work boot in a moderately strenuous work environment. My days at work are spent on an asphalt/concrete lot where I do a lot of walking in all kinds of Florida weather. Hot days with a lot of rain in the Summer and Cool days in the winter. These boots are comfortable right out of the box. No break in required. They let your feet breathe and keep them dry when it rains, but they don't last very long. I can get about a 14 to 18 months out of them before the sole is worn down. This is just how the boot is made. Don't expect a rugged hiking boot that will last you years and years. The reason people keep coming back to Merrell, myself included is the comfort that you get right out of the box. Just like I said these boots need no break in period. Use them, wear them out, they buy another. Just like tennis shoes or running shoes. Bottom line is Merrell MOAB's look cool, they look really good with jeans or shorts. The GTX version will keep your feet dry. The Vibram sole is grippy and knobby enough for hiking with light to moderate loads. There comfortable enough to wear all day while working. As I said you get what you pay for. I love mine. ... show more

  • Revised Review after wearing a dozen times - Do not recommend this shoe
Size: 10 Color: Walnut
My third pair of Merrell's and I expect the same great performance and durability as the last two pairs. I purchased the Gore Tex version because it is waterproof and breathable (my 8th pair of Gore-Tex shoes or boots) and worth every penny over the "Dry M" or other liners. I unpacked and inspected every sewn seam, every mm of sole where it attaches to the shoe, there were no problems. Every stitch was in place and even. No over-stitching, no loose threads and no gaps at all where the sole joins the shoe. They do run tight. I wear a size 9.5 and typically order size 10 shoes. I'm sure after a little use they will stretch to a good snug fit. Revision: Shoes remain tight but tolerable. A problem that has arisen is that the insoles are not even. The heel pad inside of the left shoe is noticeably higher on the inside of the heel (right side) and makes my left foot lean outward. In addition to that the entire insole of both feet is uneven and doesn't support my foot evenly. I've never had a pair of shoes with this problem, even cheap tennis type shoes for $15 at Costco. At $119, my expectation is that these would be manufactured inside and out. It's apparent that Merrell quality has declined significantly. If I had not worn them I would have returned them. I recommend that you look into another shoe / boot before spending premium prices for Merrell hiking shoes. ... show more
