Top Amazon Reviews

  • Exceptional value for a starter violin.
Size: Size 4/4 (full size) Color: Varnish
If you are a professional violinist, this violin is not for you. If you are a violin teacher with an elite mentality, then NO VIOLIN FOR YOU! To my semi-trained ear this is a good sounding instrument. There are several reviews on YouTube from actual violinists who say this is a great beginner violin. If you want to try out playing a violin without having to rent one, this is a great choice. I've never played the violin, but I do play other instruments and I can read music, so this isn't exactly starting at zero for me. However, I was able to rosin the heck out of the bow and get the violin tuned using the included tuner. I got some fairly nice sounds (again, to my ear) out of it. I can tell when a note is flat or sharp and it takes a bit of fiddling around (pun intended) with the pegs and fine-tuners to get this thing into tune. You tune one string and then that will throw another one out of tune, ad infinitum. But eventually I found that the best way to tune this is to turn all the fine tuners to the middle of the screw and then use the pegs to get close (within +/- 15 cycles) of the note you're tuning. Once you get that done with the pegs, then go back and use the fine-tuners to get it as close to the note as possible. You could also do it by ear if you have a nicely-tuned piano if you have the musical background for it. I don't have a piano, so I trusted the tuner. And the GDAE strings sounded close to the violin tutorial I found on YouTube, so I know the tuner works and is useful. Once I started playing I was able to get some clear and very resonant sounds from the violin, with the help of a nice tutorial on YouTube, I also discovered what too much rosin looks like. Like I said, I rosined the heck out of it and spent a fair amount of time wiping the fine rosin dust off of the violin. Then I loosened the bow very slightly and rubbed the back side of the bow lightly with my fingers until all of the small rosin clouds disappeared. So, I recommend starting off with maybe 10-15 swipes along the included new rosin then test and add more if necessary. Also, rosin dust will make you sneeze and leave you with sticky-fingers. I've always wanted to learn to play a stringed instrument, but never really looked into it seriously. I have several friends who play professionally and I learned from them that good violins (I mean really, really, really GOOD violins) can run into the 6 figure range, so I never pursued it seriously. For me it will likely be just a hobby, so for less than a C-note (pun intended) I can try out playing the violin. It may not be the best, but look at it this way: If I go to the store to pick up a gallon of milk and bring it back home, whether I drive there in a 1972 VW Bug or a brand new top-of-the-line Jaguar, the job gets done and the milk tastes the same either way. People may sneer at you for driving a "clunker", but that's their problem, not yours. ... show more

  • Inexpensive entry into violin; works well as an "octave violin" (e.g. cello-like sounds)
Size: Size 4/4 (full size) Color: Varnish
I haven't touched a violin since my college days as a music major. I have always loved string orchestra (I was a percussionist by trade). I have long wanted to really dive into the cello, but don't like the size and expense of the instrument. Thus I went for an odd option; buying an inexpensive, but serviceable violin and putting D'Addario Octave violin strings on it. It makes for a much quieter, but still lush cello sound as the violin is tuned an octave lower. I think a lot of people who get frustrated with these low-cost, student violins may benefit from heeding the advice on setting it up. The conditioning and stretching of the strings, setting of the bridge, rosining the bow, etc. are all critical. The violin top had a few blemishes that have minor effect on the playability. The back? Amazing. Book-matched quarter-sawn tone wood. Very beautiful and resonant. Having changed the strings and rosined the bow within an hour, I had a very playable instrument. I was quite surprised at the tonal quality and ease of playing for an inexpensive student instrument. ... show more

  • Great cheap violin
Size: Size 4/4 (full size) Color: Varnish
This is a great violin for the price! It is a cheap instrument, but works perfectly and is a great way for beginners to start playing! Mine came with 2 bows, but the frog on one bow was loose and wouldn't tighten. The seller (KKmusic store) sent a replacement bow immediately after being contacted. Great experience! ... show more

  • Upset with missing tuner & no help resolving... Tuner arrived 1/8/2018
Size: Size 4/4 (full size) Color: Varnish
Nice violin, had it tuned up at our music store and sounds pretty good when played by a pro... My Daughter is not, as she is just learning... My problem begins when we discovered it was missing the tuner... Notified both the seller & Amazon, no reply from either... Amazon promises help with issues, it has not... Also it seems hard to find avenues to take to get the help you need in resolving these issues... 2 stars will change to 4 easliy if I get the help I need... Surprised today, new tuner in the mail from KK Music... Upgraded to 4 stars, great product for the bucks.... Still no communication though. By the way, for some who reported tuning knobs slipping, our music store used the resin on the knobs (once removed) now no slippage... ... show more

  • Great For Beginners.
Size: Size 1/4 Color: Varnish
If you are a beginner, this is great. I've always had an interest in the violin and old-time fiddle music, but I've always heard that it is a difficult to learn, and never picked it up. Until recently, but I still had some reservations and didn't want to pay a large amount of money for something I may or may not play again. So this was perfect. It has everything you need (although you might want to get better strings, I did, along with some better bows),. It came ready to play, nearly right out of the case, I did have to make some minor tuning adjustments, out of my own personal preferences, than anything else. I've since had gone up in size (I needed more room on the fingerboard to spread my fingers as they should be, this one was a bit smaller than I thought it would be), and sound quality is pretty good for such a small instrument, though, I felt it could have been better. But overall, this self-taught beginner is very happy. ... show more
