Let me clarify that I am not a teacher, I have never played more than six months when I was 5. So to some people I don't know everything. This is just a review on this product of what I have found. I was hesitant about ordering this product. From all the bad reviews and different people were complaining about odds and ends. I chose to get the Black Mendini 4/4 MV solid wood violin. Let me tell you a few things that I questioned that no one had posted about. The violin does come with the strings already put in place with the pegs. You have to insert your bridge and tighten the pegs so that the bridge isn't going to fall out or anything. One thing people complained about was the pegs slipping. All I had to do was push and twist so that it tightened into the wood on the other end of the peg. I have listened to a lot of violinist and heard a lot of tuning things. I was able to tune my violin by ear. At first when you are trying to tighten the pegs so your bridge will stay in place, you need to be careful not to break the strings. Especially your littlest and thinest string. You have to move slowly and carefully. The rosin that came with mine was cracked and flakey. But you have to scratch it up a little bit to make it powdery anyways. If you take it straight out and try to play it you will get the worst sound. You need the rosin on the bow. and quiet a bit at first or you will get a cracky sound. Last night I was able to learn how to hold the bow, was able to play my open strings. and also learned the rest of the notes down the neck. The only thing I am worried about is I have already had two hairs fall out of my bow. I will see how it does over the next few weeks. If it loses to much then I will contact the seller since it is under warranty. I haven't tried out the shoulder rest yet. But if I do I will be sure to come back and update if it is good or bad like some people have said. Also Some people complained about the body being in bad shape, or the neck being crooked. Mine looks perfect. My neck is straight, and there isn't any buffs or marks or scratches anywhere. I am hoping for luck since I am 23 now and learning to play. I think I have a great start, It takes a lot of determination to get it all down!! Overall I would say this is a great beginners violin especially when you don't have 300 or more to put down on a violin that you may not continue to play! I do enjoy it though I feel I will be purchasing something better in the future!

You get what you pay for and that is a BEGINNER violin. This is the 2nd year my son has used this violin (4/4) and I just got a 3/4 pink one for my daughter. This was cheaper then renting a violin and I wanted them to be able to practice during the summer but I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for an instrument that I didn’t know if they would play. A master violinist (and teacher) told me it was great for the price and had fairly good sound. She said the biggest problem with cheap violins is that they can’t be tuned. This violin is fairly easy to tune but make sure the pegs are pushed in because they can become loose and then it becomes impossible to tune. It gets out of tune fairly easy so learn how to tune (it’s fairly easy with a violin tuning app) and how to restring (YouTube tutorial). Also, new violins (new strings) take a few weeks for them not to get out of tune with just movement so don’t freak out that it’s because it’s a “cheap” violin because even nice ones have this issue. I have helped out tuning in the schools orchestra class and I really couldn’t tell a difference between the nice violins and my kids and at BEGINNING level they all sound similar. My sons bow did just break but we haven’t had any issues until I started messing with tightening it. We were able to replace it with a much nicer bow for fairly inexpensive. I do plan on replacing this violin as my kids go to middle school and advance, but for beginners this is great for the price.

If you want something to learn how to hold a bow and finger placement. Get this it will do that. If you want something to be first chair in the orchestra, likely going to want to increase your budget by a lot. Let me make this simple. If you already have a violin of any condition and expect this to be an improvement, move along this is not for you. If you have good finger placement, keep the bow straight on the strings and can read sheet music for the violin while playing, this violin is not for you. If you never played a violin this might be the one for you (holding and moving the bow around and handing the violin back to a friend/instructor does not count as playing). The truth is all violins sound about the same in the hands of a beginner, so it is best not to worry about it. Want more of my thoughts read on. So far I have played with this one day. Not "easy" to tune for the first time. What I did was tune the strings in order A, D, G ,E and repeated 4 times. It does start to even out. Note make sure to push the peg in while tuning so that they hold. Also the tune will slightly drop every few hours. This is expected as the string are new and not exactly exceptional. I will try to update after a few weeks or months as it breaks in. So far tuning is already becoming faster and easier. (Side note, do not over tighten in hopes of faster break in. This puts additional stress on the wood and in turn bends the wood a bit differently then a standard tune. This can have unexpected results and changes when going back to the standard. Even quality violins can be changed/damaged if the tune is too tight constantly. Essentially, whatever tune you decide for your string, be consistent, even if not using the classical G, D, A, E. ) Additional note on the strings. There are some instructors who have tried this very model that recommend replacing the strings for a noticeable improvement. I will be doing that at one point. My thoughts right now are that the stock ones are fine for learning how to bow and finger placement while reading music sheets. After 2-3 months of hard practice and when bow doesn't ride up on the finger bored and finger placement is smoother, then I will invest additional $30-$40 bucks on a set of strings with nylon core. Until then I think it is a waste of effort as bow control and finger placement will cause any string or violin sound like a beginner is playing it. Build quality, it is functional level of quality. From 10 feet it is just fine to look at. If I look very closely I can see imperfections. Small indention here, maybe a light grey or black mark and some discoloration there. This is not a show piece and never intended for this. All this is for is getting used to the violin. No fear in putting stickers and tape for the finger locations and other things students do to make learning easier. This meets my needs as a beginner and I have no worries just handing it to friends. The shoulder rest, like the violin, is functional. Good enough to use and help decide if they are a thing for you or not. Personally I am going back and forth. The bow again is functional. The hair while works, it is not uniform width. The frog is boring too look at and does not attach perfectly to the stick. Curvature is nice enough to put the correct tension on the hairs. Overall the bow is comfortable enough to a hour or two. Someone who plays 3-4 hours a day might like a bow that is balanced better and lighter materials. The sound is good enough. If you are capable to play this violin to the point that you are able to pick up on the scratchyness and notice the "boring" and "plain" sound. You have no business to even be looking at this violin. Go find something in the intermediate or professional range. Too the beginners, the issues with the sound are so insignificant that I cannot pick them up when I play. I have listened to some talented people play this violin. When they play I can hear some minor issues, but I am so green that I do not notice. Frankly starting out, my mistakes will mask any flaw with this violin has. Even playing other peoples nice violins they sound just like this one because of all the learning I need. My opinion don't worry about the sound yet, seriously.(For those who might want to think I know nothing about sound. While I am learning to "play" the violin. That does not mean my ears do not know how to hear a good violin. I was part of an orchestra for a time. I also have a very nice sound system with high bit rate classical music. I have heard good violins both in person and though studio quality sound equipment. I'm pretty sure I have a good reference.) Right now I feel this is the best one in the sub $200 bracket. From what I hear an additional $30 in strings will allow it to compete with violins in the $180 mark. I still want to get more time with this to see how it wears in before I say 100% if this is a solid buy for the intended purpose. First impressions seems to be very good for someone who is picking up violin on a whim. You will be able to use this to learn finger placement, and bow movement. Those two things will take a lot of effort on their own with out the addition concern of scuffing or worse breaking an expensive instrument. I likely will replace this violin in 1-3 years for something else, but by that time I will know how to play well enough to test the more expensive violins and actually feel if the fit is good before dropping $500-$800 on the real deal.

I honestly wish I could give this violin negative stars. This instrument was just pathetic. When i first pulled it out of the box (about 4 hours ago), it was the second time i had ever touched a violin, and i could tell that it was a piece of garbage. It felt like plywood that was painted with some glossy white paint. The bridge was about the same wood. The strings kept falling off the bridge. This may be due to the fact that you cant tune it. The tuning knobs were just blocks of wood in the shape of wood jammed into holes. They had no way of locking in place. When i was trying to tune the D string, it snapped, mostly because the strings they provide you with are the worst i have ever seen. I had to go out to buy a new set of strings. When i replaced the string, it actually played alright (only the D string naturally). But the only way to get an okay sound out of it was to hold the tuning knobs in place and play the open D. That is the only possible way to play this piece of junk. The bow they provide you with isn't taught enough and literally doesn't get any sound out of the strings provided. I tried several times, but the strings are too cheap and slack to play on. The bad bow just makes it worse. People commented it is a great beginner violin, but they obviously don't know what they are talking about. Many people tried to play on it, but they get zero sound out of the strings. I cant stress enough how awful of a violin this is. Please do not put your money into it. I only held the violin for about 30 minutes and wanted to return it. I'm not exaggerating. I knew almost the moment i took it out of the box that i was going to return it. I am still awaiting the email that they will let me return it. I'm hoping to get a full refund but I'm not expecting much. So to pretty much sum it up, there is nothing good about this product and i hope you will not make the same mistake i did.

I am absolutely thrilled with my Mendini By Cecilio Violin beginner kit! As an adult beginner, I was a bit nervous about starting to learn the violin, but this kit has everything I need to get started on my musical journey. The violin itself is beautiful and well-crafted, and it produces a lovely sound. The hard case is sturdy and provides great protection for the instrument. The rosin and bow included in the kit are of high quality and have helped me to produce a great sound. I also appreciate the fact that this kit is suitable for both kids and adults, as I have children who are interested in learning the violin as well. The price of this kit is also very reasonable, especially considering all of the accessories that are included. Overall, I highly recommend the Mendini By Cecilio Violin beginner kit to anyone looking to start learning the violin. I bought this so I wouldn't be without an instrument while mine is with the luthier. The first thing I noticed is that it is very light. In fact, when I picked up the package, I thought they'd forgotten the violin. It's not only purple--it sparkles! This is endearing to my daughter, who will get it when I get mine back. It says it's full size, but seems a little small to me. Maybe it's because my own violin is from the turn of the century and the size standard has changed? I don't know. The violin came with a cheap shoulder rest, a tuner, extra strings in case one broke in transit, and an extra bridge. The case is decent, and there's a blanket for for it. The bow space is very tight. You can only put the bow in one direction. I couldn't figure out why in world it was so difficult to keep from bumping neighboring strings. Then I realized the bridge was on backwards. So for those who are true beginners in the world of the violin...the bridge has one side that is completely straight. This is the back, the part that faces the bottom of the violin, away from the fingerboard. The back should be perpendicular to the body of the instrument. The other side of the bridge is a little bit sloped. Because of the curve at the top of the bridge, if it is backwards, it makes playing more difficult. Now, sound... this instrument has a decent sound. Good for a beginner, for certain. I would be better able to judge if the strings were gut. As it is, they are steel, and since I'm used to the sound of gut, it's a little difficult for me to judge. Definitely a brighter sound than my mellow old friend. The bow, as has been mentioned, is not great. Passable for a beginner, but a bow with insufficient curve will cause some frustrations for the novice player. There is a very nice carbon fiber bow (which is tougher, too) for about the price of the violin. It's by Fiddlerman. I have one, and I love it. If the beginner is serious, or if you want the beginner to avoid frustrations that make it harder to enjoy playing, replace the bow. If my grandchild wanted to try the violin, I would buy this for her in whatever available color her heart desired.

Let me start by saying my 6 yr old daughter LOVES her violin. If your instructor says to you, "Buy the 1/2 size - your kid will grow into it!" don't believe them. Go with your gut and just buy the smaller size (unless your child is a rapidly growing teenager.) For $60 bucks, you can swing it. Not to mention, you'll probably be able to sell it once your kid outgrows it. The violin is nowhere near as purple in person. It's more of a deep, dark indigo with flecks of sparkly-ness. There are several rough spots on a couple of the bouts, but, overall construction is good. In case you've never heard of Mendini, fear not! It's part of the Cecilio line/company/whatever and your violin is not going to be a complete piece of crap. The bow - well, let's just say the bow is another story... The frog on our bow is wobbly and it seems to be missing a good deal of horse hair. As a matter of fact, two strands had come loose and broken before I even got around to rosining it. This accounts for one of the missing stars. I would have appreciated it if they'd sent two bows like several other Cecilio listings since a 50% chance at a non-crappy bow is better than an all or nothing kind of deal... I took a 1/2 star because some knucklehead put the bridge in place for shipping. Now, I know most people aren't familiar with installing a bridge and that's why the shipper probably did it, but, in my case, they put it in the wrong spot and unnecessarily stretched my strings during shipping. My last 1/2 star removal is in regards to the fitted box the violin and case was shipped in - not the outer packaging (which was fine.) For some reason, the shipper felt that it was a good idea to send on a delicate product that had had it's container whacked. I'm pretty angry about it actually and briefly considered sending the whole thing back and asking for a replacement, but, I needed this size for immediate lessons and the violin itself seems fine. However, I will be contacting the shipper regarding the shabby bow. Overall, I would recommend this product. The violin itself makes really nice sounds. I'm just not a fan of the packaging and the whole bow and bridge thing I've got going on. Update: Just got done talking to Amazon Customer Service. They've issued a partial refund for the bow and I'm ordering a new one. :)

I really loved the way it looks and everything was packed nicely, A couple of things : 1) the spot that everyone keeps saying isn’t painted properly it’s supposed to be like that , you obviously haven’t researched enough about the instrument before buying, which you should do more of so you don’t waste your time. 2) The bridge will topple over and fall out of place if it’s not tuned correctly (if tuned incorrectly the strings will snap as all strings will when there’s too much pressure because ultimately that’s what is happening , and this is normal if you’re a beginner) if the bridge falls out of place simply look at the f’s on both sides and there will be a little line in the middle of it, place the bridge between the lines. There is also videos on how to tune. This too is normal. 3) You will want to upgrade eventually and or upgrade the parts, this is simply an instrument as introduction not Orchestra worthy With that being said the black violin is really nice , the black however has a bit of shimmer to it it but it’s not overwhelming and if anything gives more texture. My violin came with no issues and the only thing that happened was that I snapped the E string but luckily there was an extra and I tuned it correctly the second try. I really like it for my beginner violin and someday will upgrade to a better one 😄
