This is such a neat little toy for small hands. We have owned several of the Melissa & Doug sound puzzles since my daughter was about 1 1/2. We just got this zoo animal version as a birthday present for her & she still loves it. She enjoys pointing out/naming the animals & then hearing the corresponding noise that follows. Great for motor skills as it takes a little more skill to place them down than the big, chunky puzzles we had around age 12 months. Con: The "sound" aspect seems to be off with most of these puzzles. Sometimes there's a lag or they don't sound off at all when covered properly. Or the strangest part--they go off randomly when not covered--as in the middle of the night you might hear a lion roaring in your playroom. Overall, it's not like it's incessant, but just a fair warning. These are fun & are always a hit at play dates! ... show more

I ordered the music instruments and zoo animals for my 1 year old and at first not all the sounds seemed to be working. Once we turned our lights from dim to bright all the sounds worked correctly. I did notice sometimes simply covering with your hand an area on the puzzle it may trigger a sound even if that’s not the piece you intended to put in. Overall I am pleased with the purchase. My toddler loves this puzzle. We got it for Christmas, and it was on sale so we had to get it. The noise does kind of go off randomly, but you can turn it off with a switch in the back! The picture quality of the animals is great, you can tell what they are! With the sound also, you can tell what animal they are! Some of the sounds are a bit off, but it’s not too bad! My toddler still really enjoys this puzzle! The puzzle is also really thick and a sturdy wood! My son has thrown it many times and it is still out together. My son loves this animal sounds puzzle!! Monkey is the favorite for sure. The pieces are cute and my son loves the reward of the animal sounds for getting the pieces in their right spots. I read reviews and was a little hesitant to purchase. I had read that the puzzle often goes off by itself randomly in the middle of the night and such. Yikes!! who wants that? Ultimately, my sons love for this puzzle (he played with it often during Developmental therapy) convinced me to give it a try. Yes, that monkey did start howling on it's own. Of course this happened while my oldest daughter and I where up late watching scary movies lol. It took us a bit of time but we figured out why it was howling. So I will share that with you :) The sensor that makes the animals make noise is light sensitive. So if you store your puzzle board with the pieces in it, you won't get the random sounds. If you store the board face down without the pieces, you won't get random noises. If you do not have that monkey piece in the board and turn of the lights at night to start watching that next scary movie, then yes, yes that monkey will howl. LOL!!! The puzzle is great honestly. This was such a great toy at first but then the animal sounds stopped working. I changed the batteries (it had a fresh pair in already) and it worked again for half the animals then immediately stopped working again altogether. We've only had it for 12 hours and it's already this defective!
