  • High quality, lots of fun for litte ones!
Style: Standard Packaging
We purchased this easel on Amazon for our 2 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. To be honest, I had been considering a more expensive easel, based on the feedback about the chalkboard on the M + D easel. However, a $100+ easel wasn't in the budget, so I went ahead and took a risk. When we opened the box and assembled this easel, I was impressed with its overall quality, as well as the ease of assembling the product. (It took a little over 30 minutes, but even with two 'assembly-challenged' people, the whole process went very smoothly.) There was nothing in the instructions about seasoning the chalkboard, but based on earlier reviews, I opted to go ahead and do it. The chalkboard didn't look all that different when I completed the process, and I wondered if it had made any difference at all. However, when my daughter wrote on it with chalk this morning (and another 50 times today), it erased just fine. (However, my daughter is only using the M + D chalk with it -- see paragraph below.) I went ahead and purchased the M + D easel accessory kit as well. I would absolutely recommend it as a companion set to this easel! The paint cups are easy to use, just about spill proof, and fit nicely in the area provided in the paint tray area. The brushes match the tops of the paint cups, so it is very easy for little ones to keep track of which brush should go in which cup. The chalk in the accessory kit is durable, but gentler on the board than regular chalkboard chalk. (I bought some Crayola chalkboard chalk for my daughter's stocking, but I tried it and it started to "scratch" the easel chalkboard, so I opted not to give it to her and instead just let her use the M + D chalk. I will be paying the extra few bucks to replace it with the more M + D chalk when the time comes. The only negative was that the dowel rod that the paper roll sits on was splintered and crooked. However, I called Melissa and Doug's customer service center and was greeted by a pleasant customer service representative who processed my request and assured me a new piece would be on its way in a few days. The one in the box was functional for the time being, so it didn't impede my daughter's enjoyment of her Christmas present. In summary, we are thrilled to have found a quality easel for such a bargain! (It was listed for around $35 when I purchased it.) ... show more

  • Adjustable, Solid, attractive and EASY to use!
Style: Standard Packaging
after returning an easel that my daughter received for her 4th birthday to our arts and craft chain store michael's, i was more than impressed with this. the other one was 20 bucks cheaper, but that extra money we spent on this was more than worth it. the other one was not as height adjustable and was poorly designed in that easel paper by the roll will just barely NOT fit and it did not fold up for storage as the package clearly stated. it was also rougher wood that didn't look like it would last. also this one just looks a little nicer. the trays are nicer and deeper. it folds up easily. it is held together by fun looking plastic wing nuts on the bolts that are easy to manipulate so adjusting the height or folding it up or taking off the easel paper roll, etc, is VERY easy. i do wish the chalk board or dry erase was magnetized, but i think we will just paint of the chalkboard side with magnetic chalkboard paint. one suggestion i do have for parents is that overall the roll of easel paper isn't the highest quality and it is expensive compared to sketch pads. you often can't use both sides, especially if your kid uses watercolors or just colors heavy with markers, and if they are left to their own devices while you say, make dinner or lay a baby down for a nap, you might just come into a room with 12 feet of paper rolled out across the room and just barely painted on every 18 inches or so rendering it almost obsolete as they can't paint on the other side and might refuse to use up the other blank spaces, despite your most convincing arguments to the remainder's capacity for artistic endeavors. i bought some recycled paper sketch pads for a little cheaper than these rolls and the paper is much higher quality, it has a bit more texture and is thicker, and we use both sides. using sheets of paper makes me want to use magnets to hold it up, as clipping it on to the top where there is a wooden piece running across leaves a space where my daughter cannot color and she gets frustrated if she tries to draw something up there and her crayon pokes through or makes an uneven line. i actually just removed that wooden slat so that it is even where i clip up her paper. i actually just moved it to her room and folded it up and laid it against the wall so it takes up less space. it seems pretty sturdy there, though i would like my husband to fashion something to keep it in place, just in case. it is very height adjustable. i have it on a lower setting, but not the lowest, even though my daughter is 4 years old and 42" tall. our one and a half year old can sort of use it at this height, but could definitely utilize it at the bottom height. you could of course put the different sides at different heights. i could see it lasting until a child is 8 or 9. overall this is a bit more expensive than some of the cheaper easels you see around, but it is way nicer and certainly worth the extra 20 bucks. this one is not only nicer looking, it has better thought out features and is very sturdy. many kids will love it for many years :) highly recommend. ... show more

  • Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel
Style: Standard Packaging
It's really a good toy with a few minor problems. My kids really do love it and my 4 year old has started writing her ABC's since she got it. The problems are: hard to assemble and the chalk board is pure cr*p. Don't expect to be able to use chalk board even after you do the break-in procedure. I ended up buy a can of chalk-board paint and repainting the chalk board part. It's a lot better now, but too darn bad I had to go through all of that in the first place. The dry-erase board is fine and the plastic cups are great to hold all the chalk, markers and erasers. (None of that comes with the board, you have to purchase all of that separately.) My husband finally got it put together after some cussing, but now it's a great toy and was not very expensive. Seems sturdy enough and has adjustable height levels which will keep it usable as your kids grow taller. My 4 and 6 year olds almost get into fights over who gets to use what side of it so it is a hit with kids. UPDATE: 10.25.14 - My kids are much older now, but they still have this easel in their bedroom and frequently write on it, especially the dry/erase board. As long as I supply them with dry/erase markers they will write song lyrics, poetry, lists of book characters and lots of colorful drawings on this board. Obviously it has a use long after early childhood. I have no plans of getting rid of it any year soon. ... show more

  • A huge hit with our granddaughter.
Style: Standard Packaging
We bought this great Melissa & Doug easel for our granddaughter when she was barely three. Last weekend she and I created "art" on it again for at least s whole hour or more of fun together. She'll turn seven years old next month and it looks like this easel is going to continue to be an important thing that is more than a toy to her--and to us, her grandparents. I don't know who the heck Melissa and Doug are. They might even be just some guy named Herman who just discovered a way to make a buck in the marketplace. Whatever his, her, or their origin is, Melissa & Doug make some really high quality things out of wood. This easel is sturdy, solid and easy to assemble. It provides a replaceable roll of drawing paper for crayon, paint or marker art, a large whiteboard surface for dry erase markers, and, on the opposite side a chalk board surface. It comes with 2 trays for art supplies such as brushes, markers, chalk, water, or paints. And it also folds flat for small footprint storage against a wall. This easel had provided hours and hours of fun and art experience. Also social engagement for our granddaughter who likes to work on it together with other kids and especially her grandpa So it's also therapy for me along with a lot of laughs as we draw all the things she is happy to imagine. FYI. It comes with a roll of drawing paper, but that will not last forever. Most art stores will carry replacement rolls, but you'll find a better deal if you check Amazon where you will find 18" wide paper rolls in a great variety of lengths for way less than you'd pay in a retail art store. ... show more

  • A Very Nice Easel!
Style: Standard Packaging
Originally, I just wanted a bare easel to hold an old oak "black" chalkboard passed down in my family for over 50 years. One of my granddaughters has taken to freestyle chalk art. SIDE NOTE: - I FINALLY located a very nice 144 pc. box of pastel colors chalk, here on Amazon. It is nearly impossible to find a large assortment of rich colored chalk, (NOT THE SIDEWALK type) anywhere! However, (after finding the perfect chalk) I was then searching the web for a stand-alone easel that looked "worthy" for this classic but somewhat large chalkboard. In my search I kept returning to view this one from Melissa & Doug. Finding no easel-only solution, I ditched my attempts and decided to buy this as a chalkboard/easel combination. After receiving and assembling it, I am not disappointed. The assembly is easy and its instructions are fairly straight-forward. The materials are pre-cut/drilled wood, bolts (including the correct tightening tool) and multicolored plastic turn-knobs used for fasteners - making the assembly, break-down for storage, (and its adjustment for the user's height/fitment) ALL fast and easy. The unit provides (2) complete "stations" for use - each with its own storage bin attached to the frame below. Side (1) I will call the chalkboard, (green) and side (2) is a white board for use with erasable markers. Both sides can be used simultaneously, when (2) children are playing together. A pole mounted horizontally across the middle section can suspend an "optional" roll of drawing paper, to be pulled out and draped over the top of either side's art surface for sketch drawing. The entire easel frame is nicely designed for each purpose, solidly - but simple. Each station's "useable" surface area (actual drawing space) is approximately 23"W x 21" H. After my 4 yr old granddaughter "helped me" in the assembly and outlined her configuration preferences, we moved the completed unit to her room for its burn-in testing. She was/is very satisfied - as am I. We shared the single chalkboard for hours. We mounted both bins on the same side for our initial session, and they stored everything we could ever need - including our drinks! Re-configuring is easy/fast using the turn-knobs. The chalk board surface "takes" chalk very well - and erases cleanly. The work surface heights, like the storage bins, are aptly adjustable to suit user preferences. I am not yet "comfortable" in introducing her to the dry marker capabilities, but I may buy her the drawing paper at some point. She loves this unit and it has already proven worthy of the cost. It is sturdy, wobble-free, and doesn't have any "cons" that we have noticed thus far. I can honestly recommend it over any other products we viewed for its application - regardless of cost - and we spent hours online (at Amazon and other sites) in search-of. I gave it 4 stars because I very rarely give 5 stars to anything. As for educational value etc. I didn't consider that - (I believe it is overstressed in toys nowadays). Let's have fun! ... show more

  • Sturdy & Has All the Little "Perks" to be GREAT
Style: Standard Packaging
We got this for my 3 yr old daughter at a great price for christmas. She loved it. She had a hand-me-down one from her older brother but it was constantly folding up or falling over (it was a wooden one as well). This one is great b/c of all the little features.... *height is adjustable so she's not stretching to reach up but it'll grow with them as well *the trays to hold the chalk, eraser and paint are very large and well positioned *the clips are nice to just clip some paper onto the paint board *unlike another reviewer, I think the chalkboard was great. It didn't feel like a normal chalkboard to begin with, but she's only used the chalk that came with the board and it writes and, more importantly, erases great (with no sanding needed). *again, it is super sturdy and was relatively easy to put together. The only thing I would recommend is buying washable paints. I purchased the accessory kit to go with this b/c I wanted the no spill paint cups and paper roll, but after reading some reviews about the paint staining things as it's not washable, I just purchased different paint. It has been a hit and is perfect for her to stand or sit b/c of the adjustable height. I would highly recommend this product-great Melissa & Doug quality once again. ... show more

  • So much fun!
Style: Standard Packaging
We wanted something for our 5 year old son to play with at home that inspired his creativity. This is it! He absolutely loves the painting, the chalk, and the dry erase. I went ahead and bought the easel accessory kit to accomany this so that I could get it all set up at once. The accessory kit is worth your money - it's everything you need to just set up and get started having some art fun. This easel was super easy to put together - in fact, the 5 year old helped with it...I lined up the holes and he put the bolts through and then twisted on the knobs. I went over the whole thing and tightened everything up with the included allen wrench when we were finished. Start to finish - I'd say it took 30 minutes (with a 5 year old helping and watching tv at the same time). The quality of this easel is outstanding - you feel like you purchased something that will last as long as you'll ever need it. Our son is about 45" tall and the instructions suggested positioning the boards at the second level (mid-height) - that's perfect for him and leaves plenty of growing room at this level and then at the next level up. ... show more

  • Fantastic - Built well, grows with child - can't go wrong!
Style: Standard Packaging
This is a fantastic piece of furniture. It is so easy to put together - I did it myself and I'm notoriously terrible at putting things together like this. But it was very easy. I was a tad concerned at the beginning of putting it together because it looked like the chalkboard and white boards were a little warped - but it fit together just fine and looks fabulous and perfectly straight. I love the fact that the surfaces and the trays are height adjustable as my child grows. That was a major factor in the decision to buy this one. It doesn't take up too much space and is a fantastic buy. We were looking at a more expensive one also - but it didn't have the adjustable height and since our child is only 2 1/2 I wanted one that he will be able to use for years to come. The other one was also much bulkier looking and would have taken up more space. This fits the bill. I do recommend getting the accessories for this so you can have the paint cups, paper roll, etc... The paint cups have covers which is nice to keep paint for a bit between paint sessions. But this - it is worth it and your child will love it! ... show more
