There are so many good features about this set. It comes with clasps to create jewelry that is easy to get on or off. The string ends are taped (like shoelaces) which makes it easy for little kids to get the beads on. The beads themselves are big enough for little hands to handle with large well drilled holes. But, you will have to buy a storage case. I never will understand why Melissa and Doug uses such beautiful packaging that is completely useless for storage. Either use cheaper recyclable packaging or include lids. ... show more

There are tons of pieces for jewelry making in this box. Plenty of string for necklaces, plus the pieces are wood, so very durable. I can't give 5 stars because: -It needs a case to store all the pieces -There is a plastic part on each end of string (used to help get the string through the "jewels) that is WAY too long. -The bigger pieces just flip over because they don't sit upright in the string. This is a nice set for a young one. Colorful and sturdy pieces. Two suggestions: 1. Pack it in some kind of recloseable box (the pieces end up everywhere). 2. Drill the holes in the big pieces closer to the top of the piece. They are drilled in the middle and the large piece falls forward constantly so is unwearable. ... show more

I bought this as an early birthday gift for a 2-year-old who will be 3 in two weeks (she often wanted to play with MY necklace when I was wearing one). This set is recommended for age 4 and older, but this little girl had no trouble with it. She did not seem aware of creating patterns, but reached first for the larger, brighter beads for her first necklace. An older child would be more likely to actually "design" necklaces by paying attention to colors and pattern sequencing. She sat, thrilled, stringing one after another, until she had strung all 220 beads on about 7 of the 9 strings provided. She needed help tying off each strand, which we knotted loosely so she'd be able to string them again later. After putting the first four necklaces on herself with such delight, she put the next two on her mother, then the last on herself - so cute! I didn't think the primary lacing beads or deluxe bead set would have held her interest more than 15 minutes. I felt sure the smaller beads would work for her because she draws page after page of squiggles in her notebook, requiring some fine motor skill. I'm glad I got this set instead. We had no trouble with damaged beads in this set - it was of very nice quality. I chose this set because I loved the bright colors and knew this little girl would love them too. ... show more

My little one is 2 years old and could uses these beads with some adult help. Easy to hold beads with clean drill holes and a sturdy shoelace type string. It defiantly would make a great gift. It would be nice if they added more beads for the amount of string they provided.

    • My 4 year old granddaughter wasn't that interested.
She liked it, but it wasn't something that made her super excited. We made some necklaces together and then she was done. I think I was more excited than she was.
