I found that in and of itself it was too hard for me to use as a bed. However, there's a hack to get it right: just add a comfortable mattress topper into it. The nice thing about this is that it comes with a cover, so you can insert the topper inside of the cover. I'm currently using two different toppers, one 1.5inch and another 1 inch and it's fine for sleeping now. It's not as comfortable as an actual mattress but it's exactly what I wanted. I essentially wanted a glorified floor mat, something more comfortable than a yoga mat that can also be used for sleeping on as well, and now it works fine. I don't like regular mattresses because they are hard to move and they're almost too comfortable where you just lay in them all day. And it's hard to sit on regular mattresses as you work because you sink in too much. That's why floor mats shine.

I don’t have any back pain so I don’t know if it actually relieves pain or not but I can speak for it’s comfort. This floor mattress is perfect I’ve been sleeping more soundly here than in my own bed. It’s true that the mattress isn’t good for side sleepers though. If you’re trying to learn to sleep on your back though I would still recommend this mattress. I use it with my weighted blanket and sleep mask for a perfect nights rest.

I kept going back and forth on it as I love the idea of tatamis but was not sure how comfortable it would be. I am not sure if it is a true Japanese traditional tatami but it is SO comfortable. We needed something to sleep on until our furniture arrived at our new house but both hate blow up air mattresses. So finally caved in and bought it and we are second guessing even returning to our actual bed once it arrives. If you’re contemplating it, buy it already!

Unfortunately my futon never fully expanded, when after leaving it to air out for several days. That has made it significantly more firm (with stronger indentations) then I would have liked. It is about 1.5 inches shorter then advertised. However, it's still pretty comfortable. The layers have stayed in place and haven't shifted at all, it's light enough for me to move around, and I love that it came with a cover to help keep it clean. I also appreciate that the materials are clearly listed, since not every shikibuton does so. Overall, considering this is definitely a budget futon, I think it's a reasonable quality for the price I paid. I am planning on getting either a second futon or mat to provide some additional support since it didn't expand fully, but that's easy enough. I will be looking at maxyoyo for the second futon since the stitching, construction, and overall materials seem to be good quality.

I bought this for help with pain. We sleep on the floor even though we have a bed. Our kiddos like to all sleep with us. This is a great up grade from sleeping on 4 comferters. I was hoping this would replace that. The folding up is semi easy BUT.... If you have limited space I would not recommend this. It does not fold up as small as you would imagine. We still haven't gotten a good spot to put it. Also the mattress has this bad smell. I have had it layed out and it still has this smell after a month. I read all the reviews before buying and the reason I bought this was mainly to sleep on something different. I'm not sure if I am sold on this item yet. I think if I didnt have to fold it EVERYDAY it wouldn't be so bad. I'm hoping the smell will eventually go away.

This mattress/bed is perfect for home with cats. No matter how careful we were air mattresses never lasted with our cats. This mattress is comfortable on the floor and can easily be out in the trunk/backseat to visit relatives so you don’t use their bumpy mattresses.
