  • Amazing sequel - Spoiler Free Review
I am still exploring all the game has to offer me. But this is an improvement on the first game on many levels. This time around we get to play and switch between 2 heroes: Miles Morales and Peter Parker. Each of them has unique abilities. Miles has abilities that revolve around his venom abilities, and Peter relies on his gadgets which can change gameplay and keep things fresh. You also have the return of side activities and pop-up crime that help you gain exp and resources to upgrade your gear and suits. One new thing for traversal is gliding, you gain access to this right in the beginning which makes exploring the city so much more fun. Story wise it is a classic spiderman tale. I haven't played through it all but I can see a very promising setup that is bound to be a whole rollercoaster. Do you need to play the previous games? I recommend that you at least play the first insomniac spiderman game. The game offers a recap but a lot of call backs and nuance will be lost if you hop right into this game. On the other hand, you can completely skip the Miles Morales game and play this one. The Miles Morales game is only about 8 hrs of story which this game gives you a good recap of. Plus maybe skipping it will offer some more "freshness" to playing Miles in this game. Cons: This game at its core retained a lot of what made the first game great. But it can feel repetitive. Combat as usual is not so much challenging but a mashing of buttons against enemies that soak up damage to different degrees depending on how "tough" they are. When the game tries to challenge you, it does so by throwing enemies that block you or try to overwhelm you with numbers which after a few fights can get cumbersome. The fights are definitely more enjoyable as Miles. At least for me. There is some grind to this game, but only if you want to unlock everything and get every activity done. And I recommend at least unlocking skills because otherwise, combat will get even more stale. Pros: The graphics are beautiful The swinging and traversal of the city is fun and so spot on. Story is intriguing and the character switching is fun and freshens up the gameplay Now, is the game worth $69.99? Sadly, not to me. Don't get me wrong, it is a fun game and if you liked the previous games and you enjoy Spiderman/Marvel you will like this game. You have a lot of gameplay and a lot of content to find and explore but when I looked it up the campaign averages 18-20 hrs without the side activities. When you include the side stuff you are looking at 30 hrs of gameplay. Unless you pursue a completionist gameplay then you are looking at 40 hrs (estimated) But the content is not enough to warrant the not-so-new price increase of video games. If you are really excited about the game, you can buy it at full price. But honestly, I would wait for a sale if you can. Holidays are right around the corner afterall. ... show more

  • Best Spiderman game ever made
This is easily the best Spiderman game ever made. The story is the best Insomniac has ever written, and the characters each have an arch that develop them over the course of the story. Every character is developed and by the end of the game they are different. The traversal is 2-3x faster than the first Spiderman on PS4 and Miles Morales, momentum plays a much larger role in web swinging causing you to traverse much farther and faster when it’s built up. The new powers for Peter bring him up to the level of Miles with powers, and the Spider legs are also a nice addition adding new special moves that can clear out enemies in droves. The new web line lets you take out multiple enemies at once in stealth and is a perfect addition to the game. There are a substantial amount of enemies thrown at you in each fight and this makes the combat even more challenging. Enemies have new attacks that can knock you out of the air, forcing you to adapt. The boss battles are revamped and boss battles require much more attention. Bosses also have health bars now which makes them feel more traditional. The new parry mechanic forces you to block attacks that you cannot dodge, adding a layer of depth to them that will challenge you more. Some attacks can only be dodged, while others can only be parried. The boss fights are also much grander in scale while also more of them are thrown at you than in the previous 2 titles. The side mission in SM2 are also much better than the previous 2 games (Howard the pigeon collector mission stands out at one of the best in the game and it is a side mission). Certain crime activities feel stale, such as stopping cars and fighting arsonists, but only a limited amount of these need to be done to 100% the game. More variety in this area would be nice, but this is not that important in the grand scheme of what the game offers. Overall, this game is the first true “next generation” game all around with graphics, performance, fast travel, and super fast traversal. It is a showcase for what the PS5 Was designed for, and nothing on the market quite touches the stellar 60fps with ray tracing in an open world that loads as fast as this. This is a generation defining game that will be revered for years to come. ... show more

  • Basically a perfect game
Absolute perfection. Improves on the other titles in every way, with a brilliant story and a fantastic open world to play around in. My favorite improvement was the way they handle gadgets now compared to the original game which was clunky, as well as the addition of special abilities. My only real complaint is the addition of the parry, which I do like, but I think the timing is too quick, and the parry indicator looks almost exactly like the dodging indicator, which causes problems. ... show more

  • Spider-Man 2 - A Powerfully Immersive PS5 Experience
Spider-Man 2 for PS5 is an incredibly immersive, enjoyable gaming experience. Despite some criticism surrounding its purportedly 'woke' themes, I opted to separate my political viewpoints from my gaming experience. In doing so, not only was I able to appreciate the game, but it genuinely exceeded my expectations. The narrative construction corresponds to some of the most seamless and fascinating Spider-Man adaptations I've encountered across various mediums, be it television series, films, graphic novels, or even other video games. The compelling story intertwines effortlessly with the gameplay, making it a truly gripping depiction of the Spider-Man universe. The gameplay, brimming with action sequences, engaging combat mechanics, and authentic Spider-Man mobility, is yet another impressive aspect of the game. It not only offers a fun, immersive playthrough but also promises high replay value with enough content and varying difficulty levels to keep you coming back for more. While there are minor glitches here and there, they do not detract significantly from the overall gameplay. And rest assured, in their constant efforts to improve user experience, Sony will likely be implementing patches in the future to rectify these glitches. In terms of graphics, the game offers rich, crisp, and detailed visuals that take full advantage of the PS5's powerful hardware. The painstakingly crafted and vividly realized world of New York City, from its towering skyscrapers to its bustling streets below, is eye-catchingly beautiful. The voice acting and score further enrich the game's cinematic quality. From the spectacularly realized characters to the dramatic orchestral music, every element adds to the atmosphere of the game. All in all, Spider-Man 2 is a phenomenal addition to the PS5 lineup, encompassing a potent blend of gripping story, engaging gameplay, admirable graphics, and excellent audio design. It's a well-rounded gaming experience worth exploring, regardless of your politicial stance. ... show more

  • Game of the year!
I recently dove into the web-filled world of Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 for the PS5, and let me tell you, it’s a spectacular experience that swings above and beyond its predecessor! From the moment you put on the Spidey suit, the upgraded graphics on the PS5 shine, delivering stunning visuals that capture the essence of New York City like never before. The cityscape is alive with vibrant details, and the fluidity of both Spider-Man’s movements adds a layer of realism that’s truly breathtaking. One of the standout features is the enhanced combat system. Insomniac has managed to blend the smooth acrobatics of Spider-Man with a more intuitive combat interface. Combining punches, kicks, and web-based attacks feels incredibly natural, providing a satisfying combat experience that keeps you engaged throughout. It’s the closest I will ever feel to being Spider-Man! The storyline is another highlight. Insomniac weaves a compelling narrative that delves deeper into Spider-Man’s world, introducing new characters and unexpected twists(no spoilers). The emotional depth of the characters adds a layer of authenticity that elevates the overall gaming experience. Web-swinging has always been a defining aspect of Spider-Man games, and Insomniac nails it once again. The seamless transition between swinging, wall-running, gliding, and acrobatics makes traversing the city a joy. I also appreciate the attention to detail in the side missions and activities. They’re not just filler content; each one contributes to the overall narrative and rewards players with valuable upgrades and insights into Spider-Man’s world. In summary, Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 for the PS5 is a must-play for any fan of the web-slinger. It successfully builds upon the foundation of the first game, delivering a visually stunning, emotionally resonant, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Whether you’re swinging through the skyscrapers or facing off against iconic villains, this game truly captures the essence of being Spider-Man. Highly recommended for both fans and newcomers alike! ... show more

  • Great gameplay, but....
I was really looking forward to this game, and for the most part I got the improved gameplay I was hoping for. There are added traversal options for web swinging, and you also have web "wings" that let you glide all over both boroughs. You'll find yourself zipping all over the city much faster than in either the first Spider-Man, or Spider-Man: Miles Morales. You can also unlock Fast Travel as before, and it is MUCH faster. No more subway cut scenes. Once you've unlocked the option for that area, pick it on the map and you're there in a few seconds, mid swing or glide. The game looks amazing either in Fidelity or Performance mode. In both ray tracing is present, though of course done better in Fidelity mode. You play as both Peter and Miles. Most of their supporting casts are back and I like all of those characters for the most part. The one character I sometimes don't like is MJ. Most people didn't want to play as her again and instead of listening to that, Insomniac chose to give us more missions as her. They did try to make them more action oriented, but for me they came across as bit too unbelievable even for a superhero game. I was disappointed with them. I also felt that the writers went out of their way to malign Peter Parker, partly to help prop up Miles, which wasn't necessary. Miles is already fine on his own, he didn't need them to tear down Peter. We also have Peter doubting himself, diminishing himself at times. Once you pick up on this it tends to stick out. It's especially bad during one of the last missions. There's some dialogue that just made me shake my head. There are some side missions that people have been complaining about. The one mission with Miles' girlfriend, I didn't think it was so bad. It slowed the game down a bit and probably should have been optional, but I wasn't put off by it. There were other missions and certain imagery that annoyed a lot of people. I don't think I should get into those here, though. I unlocked the platinum trophy in about 36 hours, and for much of that time I did not use Fast Travel, and I did some goofing off and messing around, not focusing on anything specific. If you're just looking to do the story, you're looking at maybe 12-15 hours, and that's being generous. You don't need to play on Ultimate difficulty to get trophies or anything. You beat the game, and get the option to play on Ultimate for seemingly nothing other than the challenge. I enjoyed this game overall, but I worry a bit about what they will do with Peter Parker in the next game. The Wolverine game will also take place in this universe, and I worry that Insomniac is veering off course and we may get a Logan that is somewhat neutered as they prop up maybe Laura(X-23), or some other character. I hope I'm wrong. I hope they do Wolverine justice and stay focused on him and his journey, and I hope it's a violent one with nothing held back. If you haven't picked up this game yet, you may want to wait for a sale. At $70, it might not be worth it to you. You'll have fun, but you'll probably put it down a lot sooner than you're expecting. ... show more

  • Best PS5 Game This Year!
Great story, great animations, great graphics. I mean this game is a huge step up from Spider-Man and Miles Morales in terms of graphics. This is like when you played beat em ups on NES then switched to SNES and the character sprites were bigger, beefier and looked so much better. That is the best way I can describe this. The addition of new traversal techniques are welcome and really add fun to moving around NYC. Speaking of NYC, the map has been added to making it even more huge, they added Queens and Brooklyn and a couple other areas. I'm not from NYC, so I'm not that familiar with them. Fast travel is really cool, I mean, I'm not a fast travel person, but I had to try it out once and it's silky smooth, and there is no loading! The story is great! Really tugs on the heart strings and Peter and Miles are great playing off each other. I don't want to spoil anything about the story because I went in blind and I was completely floored by the story and where it went. Just know it's fantastic! Overall, this is the best PS5 game this year and you should already own it. It took me about 28 hours to get the plat on Spectacular difficulty, and you only have to play it once to get the plat (but I'm sure you'll be playing it over and over). The only downside is that there isn't any NG+ stuff, like not even a NG+ mode. There isn't any reason to play this in NG+ like there was with Spider-Man and Miles Morales. Although I heard they are adding a NG+ mode by the end of the year, but I don't know why if there isn't any incentive to replay the game. ... show more
