  • A faithful remake, though still feels lacking
Platform: Nintendo 3DS Edition: Standard
Bowser's Inside Story is one of the great Nintendo DS games, and it is nice that Nintendo has remade and enhanced it for the 3DS. Sadly it doesn't feature 3D graphics, but it does have enhanced graphics, making it look more polished, and the speed has been altered so it runs slower, yet smoother. This slowdown also extends to some enemy attacks, making them much easier to dodge, and therefore decreases the difficulty of the game. The difficulty has been lessened to a degree also. In the original getting an excellent attack could be quite difficult due to the narrow window of opportunity, such as with the hammer or with some bros attacks, but in this version that window was expanded -slightly- making it possible to routinely get excellent attacks, but it's not so long that it's button mashing easy, although there is an "easy mode" in the options menu. This also affects Bowser's minion attacks, making it much easier to, for example, launch every Goomba and hit gold ranking in the massage parlor. The annoyance factors are still there as well. Battles with Mario & Luigi will still take an annoyingly long time due to the low damage dealt outside of Bros Attacks, yet easily avoided enemy attacks. Boss battles still take ages. Enemy health is not visible, which adds to the feeling that boss battles will never end. Some of he bros attacks, such as the bouncer, still seem to be overly complicated and included just to have another special attack. Things like this work themselves out in the later part of the game when star and shine ranks are hit for the better gear and the better bros attacks are obtained, but it makes the first half of the game really drag. The Energy Hold stage, for instance. Speaking of leveling, a new feature to this version is that when you rank up, you get to choose a bonus effect that will affect them from then on, such as an additional +1 power or increased healing from items. Sadly they did not include a temporary checkpoint feature in this version either, a system where a temporary save point is created so the system can be shut down or game switched which is restored then deleted when the game is launched again. Save points are still plentiful, but some of them have longer stretches between them. Bowser Jr's Journey is a welcome addition as well, akin to the Bowser's Minions in the Superstar Saga remake. I won't delve deeply into it as to limit spoilers, but I will say that, like Bowser's Minions, it leaves you disappointed, feeling more like a minigame tacked on, which it essentially is, instead of a full companion game. All in all it's a worthy purchase even if you own the original. I wish there were more new content, such as new minigames and expanded quests, but that is limited to just Amiibo scanning. ... show more

  • Good game, but super-insane-easy-mode
Platform: Nintendo 3DS Edition: Standard
I'm not too sure if it's because I got older, or if the original was this easy, but this game felt incredibly easy. I'll still fail a few times in areas in Superstar Saga but breezed through this game, only dying once to the final boss. There's an immense, and I mean immense amount of hand holding. The easy mode option is everywhere. You can practice bros-moves long before you ever risk screwing them up in a real fight. Starlow obnoxiously tells you what to do at every step of the way, and will repeat it until you want to pick her out of the screen and throw her out the window. But Inside Story is still unbelievably superior to Partners in Time, which made me glad they skipped the second Mario and Luigi game and remade this one. Unfortunately a lot of that linear-crap that was introduced in Partners in Time is in Inside Story. You can mostly 100% the game the first time you see a screen, only having to return to a few places to get some collectibles, leaving no exploration. I heavily dislike how Partners in Time gave you a talking suitcase, and Inside Story does a little better by turning your talking suitcase into Starlow who is a character you'll have for every other Mario and Luigi game. I wish they would go back to the Superstar Saga gameplay where you didn't have a Navi, it forced the world around you to introduce mechanics and moves, rather than having a Navi tell you everything you needed to know. The music is good. The dialogue is unbelievably funny. I actually ended up liking playing as Bowser more than Mario and Luigi partway through the game. This game is a lot of fun, and by recent trends it might be one of the last 'great's released on the 3DS. I just wish it wasn't quite the beginning of the ez-mode, hand-holding, annoying design formula that Alpha Dream keeps throughout the next two Mario and Luigi games. ... show more

  • Best DS game remade, but inferior to the original
Platform: Nintendo 3DS Edition: Standard
Mario and Luigi’s Bowser’s Inside Story is the best game there ever was on the original DS. Unfortunately as a kid I lost my game 2 times and my parents gave up buying any more copies, but now I bought this version in order to get a “complete” experience on 2DS/3DS, and I mostly did. Of course the new thing about this game is that it is now “better” looking, but it comes with downsides. First, the depth doesn’t feel right at all, this one caterpillar boss later on will become annoying because of how unpredictably fast her spider web attack when it goes for Mario. Those sort of problems really made my experience less enjoyable compared to the original. The combats take so much longer to load compared to the DS version and it really stops the flow of the game. Also I am a tiny bit disappointed they were lazy enough to give the voices of Mario and Luigi from the Superstar Saga remake in this version... But overall the game still retains some charm, not all of it, but some of it all because of the updated graphics. In the long run, I would say try to find a copy of the original for a good price and if you cannot, then go for this version because this game is a must play for any 3DS owner. ... show more

  • Satisfied
Platform: Nintendo 3DS Edition: Standard
I thought I would get scammed because these 3DS games are out of print but the game came brand new, no signs of use and still wrapped in plastic. I got the world edition which worked fine on my American 3DS. This remake is pretty underrated, highly recommend if you haven’t played Bowsers inside story. ... show more

  • Blast from the Past
Platform: Nintendo 3DS Edition: Standard
It’s overall a blast from the past. Newer art and mods for the 3DS is wonderful, and the music is very nice like how I remembered it! The only thing is that I thought with Bowser Jr’s Journey you could... actually take control of him freely like the mario Bros. But the story regardless is still fascinating. ... show more
