  • First liquid chalk I've used and 2 months later review
So as the title suggests this is the first liquid chalk I have used. So my opinion is biased since I haven't tried other brands yet. I was getting real sweaty hands lately while indoor climbing so thought I'd give some liquid chalk a try. Since all were the same ingredients I bought the cheapest which was mammut. It definitely helped, but isn't a miracle worker since it degrades after maybe 6-7 climbs, bug most days that's fine. If you lather it on too thick it will completely flake off and be useless. A thin layer is key. Overall I'd recommend it if you have sweaty hands since it definitely did make a difference. Now as far as other brands being better I'm not sure on that yet. I will try Edelweiss next since they are the most recommended (also more expensive by a good margin). Would definitely come back to Mammut if the Edelweiss is more or less the same. After first tube: So this lasted me about 2 months of using 4 times per week. I had the chance to use the Edelweiss liquid chalk now and it seems to stay on better and it is less viscous so it rubs in a bit better. Not like a ton better than Mammut, but for the extra dollar I think the Edelweiss is worth it. ... show more

  • Not all chalk is created equal
I like to use liquid chalk as a base layer before a difficult or long climb. I apply a thin layer of liquid chalk, then dip my fingers in my chalk bag. It helps powder chalk stay put longer. I've tried lots of brands (Petzl, Edelweiss, SoiLL, Mammut). Some of them last an amazingly long time (e.g. Edelweiss), and others barely have an edge over powder chalk (looking at you, Mammut). Liquid chalk is just magnesium carbonate suspended in an alcohol base with a binding ingredient, so you might think they're all the same. Why not just get the cheapest one? For some reason, Mammut is the only brand I've tried that flakes off immediately after applying it. You can literally apply it, wait 15 seconds for it to dry, and then curl your hand into a fist and watch the chalk dust start to fall off. I tried it a few times, and then gave the rest away to a newbie at my gym who was just happy for a hand-me-down. Going back to Edelweiss, which sticks around so long, I have to scrub with soap at the end of a climbing session. Another thing you might not think to consider is the size and shape of the bottle. (do you want to have to carry a big bottle around with you, or wouldn't you rather be able to hang it from your harness?) ... show more
