Not bad but the chair designs aren't that great and how to make tables is information you can get elsewhere. Most chair designs out there in articles are biased to avoid certain angled joinery issues and issues of limited craftsmanship skill many beginners and intermediate woodworkers are faced with: angled tenon shoulders in particular. Jeff Miller's book on chairmaking is better and more fleshed out in terms of chair making, but the designs are not much stronger than those in this book, though each one in the Miller book introduces new concepts including the angled tenon and taken as a teaching text it can indeed prepare you to approach chairs that people will pay what the labor is worth to own. The Ripley book and the Miller book are the best I've seen for more elegant and formal, not-twig-and-bark, non-Windsor chairs. To this book's credit it has an interesting folding chair in it and a gothic revival sort of chair that is interesting. The table and chairs on the cover were built by some woodworking students learning about production. The article covers their learning experience and isn't really written in such a way to teach the reader how to make the chairs. It's more like "look what we did in school". ... show more
