  • A helluva feast, like ordering a sirloin and getting a filet mignon
This is one of those stories that's such a simple concept you have to ask yourself—if you're a writer like me—why you didn't think of it. Simple in concept, but masterful in execution. This is an amazingly well done short story. The writing harkens back to something one might have read in Amzaing Stories or an Isaac Asimov mystery mag in the 1950's. I was immediately taken back to my childhod, although it's not a children's story. It's about a bottom feeder who steels a makeup case, quite possibly the wrongest makeup case ever made. The setting is perfect, the characters evoked with a fidelity that had me both seeing and hearing them so thoroughly it was as if I was in the scene myself. When the author told me Marco was three hundred pounds, I already knew it. Not because he had alluded to it, but because I had seen it, because of course a man like him had to be three hundred pounds. Marvelous writing. Simply marvelous. There are many, many memorable lines in this tale, like "the towering height of him came up like a released spring" and "Marco's face was the color of spoiled cheese." You'll have to read the story to see the others, of which there are so many. When I bought this I thought I was sitting down at the buffet, as it turned out I was seated at a full fledged feast. Delicious. If you have never read McCammon, this is a great intro. Great writing always leaves you wanting more and after this, you'll want more, no doubt. Highly recommended. Five stars. An awesome and fun read. ... show more

  • A Distinctive Story from One of the Masters of Horror
I am a big fan of Mr. McCammon, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on a short story of his. I loved the unique story - very creative (other reviews have tackled the plot synopsis, so I won't be redundant). Mr. McCammon also has a great gift for getting the reader to suspend disbelief and just hang on for the ride. The only criticism I have, and it's a minor one, is that the pace seemed a little rushed at times. I felt the story could have been fleshed out a little more. Even so, I hung on and it was one hell of a ride! ... show more

  • Good
I love this author, but the story is not one of my favorites. It was short, and easy to read. I just felt like it was not as real as some of the books he writes.

  • Great quick bite
The first horror that I read was Swan Song by McCammon in 1987. I recently rediscovered him and have read everything by him. I was looking for a fast bedtime read and found Makeup. The protagonist character development was swift and exactly enough for this tale. I love the premise of a desperate not real bright guy in love and his quest for money and therefore the girl. It left me wanting more but also was enough to wrap it up in just a few pages. I definitely recommend Makeup for a quick tasty read. ... show more

  • Twilight Zone-ish
I have been a big reader of RM for a very long time. He is just an excellent writer of whatever he writes about. I thought Swan Song was the best thing he would write but then he cranks out the incredible Night bird series. This is nice short Twilight Zone story that hits the spot for a short commute. I will grab up everything he does but I like his diverse catalogue. Horror is fine but he could write about anything and I will like it. ... show more

  • Fun ride!
I lober Robert McCammon's short stories! This one was very fun. Reminded me of the Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. Ending was great!
