I had no idea how to play this game going in, and while it includes "instructions", they leave a lot to be desired. (They are badly translated from an Asian language and I'm really just guessing at what we're supposed to do.) I had figured hey, they were magnets, and we can always use new refrigerator magnets around here. As refrigerator magnets, they're passable. Two of the shapes (round and cylindrical) are pretty much useless as fridge magnets, but they're the most fun to just play around with because they will roll and spin. The flat shapes (heart, star, circle) work decently as fridge magnets, but they're not as strong as I was hoping for, and all of these are smaller than I had expected. The round balls are about the size of regular marbles, and the rest of the pieces are scaled pretty close to them - about 3/4" at the largest diameter in the set. There are also some defects on them, where the coating is pitted or divotted, but I'm actually okay with that, as it's not a structural issue, just an appearance problem. The game, though, ended up being more fun, and more interesting, than I had been expecting. There are two separate options - one in the box, the other using a rope on the table. I feel like the rope version would work better with the more uniform shape that most of these kits come with than it does with these novelty shaped magnets. The balls roll around like crazy on the table, where the stars and hearts are much less likely to move, making the difficulty level much higher for the person trying to place a ball than the one trying to place a star or a heart. If the pieces were all the same shape, the game would be more evenly matched. The shapes seem to work equally well in the box version, though. As far as gameplay, it's very similar in concept to Jenga I would say - just keep adding pieces until somebody slips and everything goes crashing together, at which point the giggling starts. No matter what version we were using, my 8 year old daughter found the game hilarious and hasn't stopped giggling since we unboxed it. Dad appreciates how fast a round is - he can play a full game with her in less than five minutes, which is his type of game. It's also a simple enough game that she can effectively play by herself, or with her doll, just placing pieces until they collect together. There is some strategy aspect which she will eventually figure out (keep them as far away as possible as long as you can), and there are definitely fine motor aspects that she will get practice on, but I'm not seeing the comparison to chess on this game: it's fast, it's action packed, and there's not THAT much thinking involved. Basically the opposite of chess. Overall, I'm glad I grabbed it, and it should give us a good "I'm bored" option on these long winter days. ... show more

I recently purchased the Magnetic Chess Game for my son, and overall, it has been a great addition to our collection games. The magnetic feature adds convenience and portability, making it perfect for on-the-go entertainment. However, I did encounter a minor issue with the product. Unfortunately, there were missing pieces in the game, specifically the star-shaped magnetic piece. This was quite disappointing, as it affected the overall gameplay experience. It would have been great if all the pieces were included as expected. The Magnetic Chess Game still provides a fun and engaging experience for chess enthusiasts of all ages. Magnetic Chess is a fun and dynamic game - you can play at home or on the go. This set comes with the foam playing board, a string rink, and the magnetic chess pieces. The instructions indicate two ways to play. Pros - my kids played for a solid hour yesterday, with my son continuing to play on his own trying to figure out some secret strategy. I love the fact that they weren't even asking about electronics. I also like that I can take it in my purse for brewery and restaurant visits. We love playing games while we hang out / wait! Cons - the instructions didn't make a lot of sense. I had seen the game played on a TikTok, so we managed, but they could be more clear. I also wish the carry bag was a little sturdier, it's a weird plastic-y material and I'm not sure how long it will last. ... show more

Both versions of the game (string or foam) is super fun. The string version is a little tougher because the magnets roll around and move more freely. The foam is fun because you don't see how close the magnets are to moving until you make the wrong move and it's too late. There is enough magnets for two people to divide them equally. I could play it for hours and you can pack up the magnets and string into the little travel bag. Great game. ... show more

    • Does what it should. Good replayability
This is a pretty simple concept, but also can be very strategic. With the various shapes available in this particular version, it makes things even more interesting. It's recommended for kids 9+, but my 6-year old was able to understand and follow the rules pretty easily.
