When all the way open, the opening is 2.75" to the outside edges of the clap. Shave off a bit less than a 1/4" for the inside edges. When closed, the interior gap goes up to just under 1.5", which is pretty nice. The tension on the clamp is strong enough for my needs. The rubber clamp tips and handles slide off really easily. They seem to stay in place OK, but I wish they were more securely attached. I'll use some glue to handle that. If it matters to you, they are made in China.

The media could not be loaded. Crudely made from bent sheet metal, not nearly as nice as the spring clamps I already have. Jagged inner jaw would not be appropriate around wood working. Deal breaker: rubber tips slide right off. I'm sending them back.

The clamping function works as designed. Flaw #1 The PVC tips and grips. The PVC is black, very soft and not permanently attached to the clamp. When the clamp is engaged, the PVC tips seem to adhere to whatever is being clamped....bare wood and painted wood. So while working on a home project, I clamped applied Alex Flex to my beadboard, placed it and reached for my new clamps to hold while I get my nail gun. After nailing, I left the clamps in place for maybe 25 to 30 minutes to allow for the Alex Flex to set. I removed the clamps and was surprised to find black PVC where ever the clamp touched.....marring the surface of my project. I tested the clamps on other surfaces with the same result. Flaw #2 - As sticky as the tips and grips are, neither will stay on my clamps. So, when I attempted to removed the clamps the tips stuck to my project and one of the grips came off. Further inspection revealed that none of the grips or tips would stay on if I even tried to slide them off with little to no manipulation. My fix - I applied superglue to the exterior clamping surfaces of the tips and gorilla glued the tips and grips inside. Now, the clamping surface is slick and will release when the clamp is released as well as both staying on the clamps. Buy them again? No.

Others have commented on this as well, but I am not as forgiving as they are regarding this defect. The essential covers are the ones on the jaws of the clamp, as they keep the bare metal of the clamp from marring whatever it is that you are clamping. They also can be important in maintaining a good trip on the clamped object. A bit of the right glue will hold the covers in place, but the manufacturer should be smart enough to have identified and resolved this shortcoming.

They clamp really strong, plenty good for my application (holding together 2 things, one of which is on wheels, by clamping their edges). My only gripe is that the rubber tips have a tendency to get pulled off if you're not careful... And I don't like monkeying around to slide them back on, even though it's pretty easy, because I'm scared to get a finger caught in these super-strong clamps

These are perfect for glue-ups, the power is just right. They open enough for most light lumber. Woodworkers need a lot of clamps, and to buy enough fancy ones would cost you a fortune. So these fill a need. 1 star off because the jaw pads slip off too easily. A little "Shoe Goo" (similar to Goop glue) held them on, and I think permanently. Highly recommended for the price.
