  • Great Game Exceeded Expectations
Style: SE - PlayStation 5
Got this game when it was on sale after the 2.0 update and am so happy I did. The game is solid and scratches that Dark Souls itch. The gameplay is challenging but will be familiar for fans of From style games. I appreciate that the difficulty is still engaging, but not frustrating or exhausting. The lamp mechanic used to traverse between the two different realms is unique and leaves a lot of secrets to be discovered. The environments are engrossing and well detailed. The art direction is like a heavy metal album cover. The developers clearly put a lot of polish and hard work into the game. I highly recommend this game if you like Dark Souls or Dark Fantasy RPGs in general. Im very picky with modern games, but this one is checked all the boxes for me. First game in a while where I can’t wait to get off work and play. ... show more

  • Really Fun!

Ok, I was skeptical of the game. My track record for "good" souls-like games has been pretty bad. So when I saw this game for $20 on sale, I was cautiously optimistic. Booted the game up and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a fun game with a neat mechanic where you move back and forth between two different worlds as you traverse the game. Graphically, it looks pretty stellar. Not that I'm surprised anymore with where we are technology-wise. Gameplay is solid. Enemies have a bit too much HP, but that's a common complaint in most of my plays of more modern souls-likes. Part of the charm of these games was that you were on a similar playing field with all enemies. Now, you better be ready to make some perfect maneuvers or you're going to be toast. Enemy variety is a bit low. There's a handful of enemy types and they get reused with different "element" additions. It seems pretty common now. You have your normal enemy, the heavy, the ranged heavy, the shambling enemy, etc. They're just reskinned. Online play is pretty nonexistent. Don't expect a lot of other people playing with you. That said, the few times I got a friend in the game, it was a good time! And, they don't bug out immediately after you beat a boss so I ended up playing for a few hours with the same player. It was a ton of fun! ... show more

Fun game. I like the lantern gimmick. Bosses fight are cool. Not as hard as the dark souls series, so good way to introduce youself if you want to get into them.

  • Hard but satisfying

I don't watch any online gameplay videos so no help. This game is pretty challenging. It has it's soulborne similarities but you go in-between real and a umbral spirit dimension which ads more enemies. You have to switch sometimes between them to progress. Also when enemies deplete your health you enter the umbral dimension and have to find waypoints that return you to the living. Has lots of weapon upgrades but no real armored upgrades just a downgrade the lightens item while taking away stats. It also has different selection of randomizers and handicaps you can equip. The beginning is a little slow to figure out and lots of hidden paths . The map makes this game even harder as it's just a picture as reference. I played this after elden ring so it took me a while to quit hitting elden ring controller buttons. Got it for 19.99 and put about 170 hours into it ... show more

Got the game/item from Amazon resale. Game was in excellent condition, the game case...well...it looked like it had been on three tours of duty, back to back! Crushed with plastic chunks missing. Lol. But the game came practically mint. My .02

  • I WANT to like this game
Style: DE - PlayStation 5
I never played the first LOTF but got pretty excited for the trailers for this one. It looked like the developers really learned their lessons and were trying some very different for the souls formula. And maybe, they got a little too different. The umbral world mechanic is very cool and makes exploring a lot more interesting than other souls games. I absolutely loved “lies of p” but it was incredibly linear. This is not. And actually, to a fault. It’s easy to get lost and I’ve found myself going to the internet several times to figure out where to go next. Sometimes the layouts are just nonsensical. Graphically the game is maybe one of the best, if not THE best looking souls styled games out there. Unfortunately it comes with a very heavy price that has been mentioned in a number of reviews already; the frame rate. If the goal was to emulate the first dark souls, they absolutely nailed the feel of blight town since LOTF’s own poison swamp is absolutely bogged down with stutter. Part of the technical issues comes from one of the other negatives about the game: there are way too many enemies on screen at any given time that really artificially ramps up the difficulty. Obviously that cause some bad performance issues since there’s just a ton of things happening on screen at once, but it also just ruins the experience. It’s very hard to feel like the game comes down to skill when you’re always absolutely surrounded by enemies and, typically, endlessly spawning enemies at that. Almost every death feels cheap and like there isn’t much you can do about it. You’ll easily end up in situations where you have ten to twenty “soldier” enemies around you, several heavy enemies, all while being tagged from a distance by archers or casters that do unprecedented damage. It is not fun. It is not balanced. It doesn’t feel like something you can really “get good” at. I was looking forward to this game, I’ve played and finished a lot of souls-likes, even platinuming the fromsoft classics, but I really don’t know that I’ll end up seeing this through to completion. If you have to choose between the two, get “lies of p” ... show more
