Description

Liquitex offers the broadest range of acrylic mediums to inspire creativity at every stage of the painting process. Surface Prep Mediums are used to seal prime and add tooth (for color adhesion) to all surfaces such as canvas wood paper and metal. This same preparation is used for both acrylic and oil paint. Our professional gessoes usually take just one coat, and adding Liquitex Soft Body color to any gesso creates customized tints and primers. Liquitex Gesso Surface Prep Medium is a premium acrylic gesso used to prepare painting surfaces for acrylic and oil paint. Excellent base coat primer for many applications, including murals; one coat is usually all that is required. Can be applied to any material or surface that will accept traditional acrylic media, such as canvas, paper, wood, etc. Liquitex Surface Prep Mediums are lightweight, non-toxic, and dry to a water-resistant, non-yellowing surface. APPLICATION: Use undiluted or thin up to 25% with water. When thinning more than 25%, use an equal mixture of water and Liquitex Matte Medium to thin gesso. Love, love, LOVE. Go buy some! It would be very easy to stop my review right there, but that doesn't really tell you why this stuff is so great. All of the stupendous properties of gesso, in a clear medium. No chalky, thick white stuff anymore - you can't see this when it dries. Much like gel medium, it goes on with a whitish tint - but dries crystal clear. How do they get all the goodness of gesso in this stuff - and keep it clear? My favorite bonus of this stuff is the ability to draw or paint - then mix this with clear varnish (also by Liquitex) in equal parts and apply it to my piece before going onto the next layer. The varnish seals in the previous layer and the clear gesso provides a perfect surface for the next layer. It leaves the perfect amount of tooth on your surface to really grab onto whatever you add next. And you can see the layer under it! No longer are you torn between adding more gesso while obliterating the work you've already done, or living with a less than ideal surface so you can see what's under the gesso. This opens up a whole new world of beautiful surfaces you can paint on. It's awesome - and the price on Amazon is...WOW! Less than half what HL charges - on the rare occasion I can locate it there. Clear gesso is now a non-negotiable part of my paint-by-number process. I use a big, fat acrylic brush to apply it, a cheap one, since this stuff goes on with a glue-like texture that absolutely will not play nice with anything you care about. Once dry, the surface develops what artists politely call “tooth,” which in this case feels like rubbing your hand across a chalkboard while someone whispers unsettling facts about sand. Is it texturally cursed? Slightly. Does it completely transform how well paint grips the canvas? Absolutely. With one coat, my paints stay where I put them, the lines don’t bleed, and I use far fewer layers to get solid, even coverage. That includes covering the printed outlines and numbers that span the entire canvas. It does slightly mute the background color, which gave me a moment of pause the first time I used it. But the lines and numbers stayed sharp, and since the entire surface gets painted over, it turned out to be a complete non-issue. This won’t make you a better painter, but it will make the whole experience feel less like a struggle and more like something you might voluntarily do again. _______ The attached photo obviously isn’t of the product itself.
