The train was nice, but it was fragile . The train could easily break of bumped or dropped the wrong way. Having said that the train was somewhat difficult to set up. The stam locomotive and coal car have to ve conmected in 2 places, which makes in difficult. The train is neat and runs well, but the track is somewhat difficult.     • It’s a good runner, with some issues in regards to wiring

I was reluctant to buy Lionel’s O gauge set, as I run everything HO scale. So you can imagine my excitement of finally being able to run a Polar Express train at home. Unfortunately, the first train I had was riddled with problems. The front pilot kept derailing, then on some instances the back bogies on the loco derailed. All these derailments eventually had a toll on the wiring that goes from the loco to the tender, to the point where all except 2 wires remained attached on the loco. The head light stopped working first, then it wouldn’t run on the remote until finally, the train couldn’t even run on dc. I was disappointed, but I thought this train couldn’t have been so horribly made. I must have had a bad batch and so I asked for a replacement. The new train runs beautifully, I haven’t had a single derailment so far and the train runs like a dream. I know I mentioned a lot of negatives and I am not going to mention the track, because most people here have already pointed out it’s faults. Even so, I am confident in my new train. It is very obvious the first one was faulty and was absolutely not worth the money. That is not the case with this second train, thankfully. My only suggestion is be careful with the wiring, because once that gets loose the train becomes redundant. Hopefully lionel will redesign this system in the future. ... show more

    • Bang for your buck ratio is not quite there

The bang for your buck ratio on this Lionel HO Polar express train does not seem right. The magnetic track seems like it would be great on a flat surface. I have this train on a relatively flat rug and I ended up with a lot raised edges where the tracks meet. Which then leads to derailing. So, if you are having issues with derailing, run your finger across the entire track and feel for raised track edges where they meet. I think this is a great track for flat surfaces, otherwise the track is not that great. The locomotive needs something more at this price level. Appearance wise, the locomotive and passenger cars look great for a starter set. The negative? The sound quality is that of a mediocre fm radio. There are a lot scratchy noises, I am left wondering if this is a defect or if this is the way it is meant to be? The front plastic wheels on the front and rear of the locomotive drive me crazy. It is almost as if they are too light and any imperfection on the rail causes either of the two to derail. I think this product has a lot of potential as starter train set. What would lead to a five star review? How about some metal wheels on the rear and front wheels of the locomotive to add some resistance to dislodging? Also, some better sound quality would be great.     • Not worth the hassle or money!!!

I tried to hard to love this, but ended up returning it. Primary issues for me: #1: There is no railer pice that easily gets the train wheels on the track. It literally took 5-10 minutes trying to perfectly place the cars on the track. The old system had one track piece that you just move the car back and forth over it and the wheels would be on in seconds, and corrected any alignment issues as the train drove over it. This did not have that. #2: The couplers do not easily couple together like the old systems I’m used to. I had to manually push on the couplers in different directions to get them to line up properly to link, and that usually resulted in a car wheel coming off the the track, then back to issue #1 #3: The magnatrack is a great concept, but in reality it is terrible. It really needs to be on perfectly flat hard surface to even have a chance, but even then if you bump it at all, the train will get stuck on the smallest alignment gap. There are small holes to nail it down, but I really just wanted something that I could easily put up under my tree without having to put down a plywood base. This track won’t support that unless you set it up and rope it off and don’t actually play with it. Quality issue on this particular unit: The headlight was not functioning on the engine All in all, setting up the train was more frustrating than it was fun, and there was no chance my kids would have taken the time to work through all the issues, so it was an easy decision to return it, especially considering the high price. Just not with it! One tip: if you are going to try the system, don’t buy extra track until you get the system and try it out. I could only buy extra track from 3rd party sellers on Amazon, so when returning those, I incurred shipping and restock fees. ... show more
