“Remember, without lighting all you have is a black picture.” This book tells you exactly what the title says it will. Jackman explains why one needs to know something about lighting (not just to properly expose the image but to create the idea of depth and mood). He notes that video is not trying to copy reality, but rather to shape the image to the experience and expectations of viewers. He leads the reader through the comparison of human and camera vision, a little basic electricity, lighting instruments and controls, lighting techniques, especially interview setups, and then several different specialized cases, including wedding and product videos. He covers everything from simple setups to complex studio and location setups. What impressed me most of all was the organization and clarity of his explanations. On the other hand, while there is useful information and illustrations for the single shooter, many of the settings will require more workers and equipment than the lone wolf may have available to him. Everything mentioned involves the use of at least one continuous lighting instrument, and as I expected, there was not much here for me as a wildlife videographer. Even though Jackman provides several useful examples of the shaping of light to tell a story, I would have liked to see a little more on lighting design. I also would have liked to see more about the division of responsibility in larger crews. I've read several books on video lighting that go into far more detail, but none that are any clearer and easier to understand.
