  • Definitely recommend
Format: Paperback
There are some fantastic books about lighting but with this book you are going to learn how to train your eye to analyze your work more critically knowing concepts is not enough, this book includes all you really need to know about light in computer animation and the most important thing: with an Artistic eye. One amazing plus is that you can find some interviews with professionals of the industry that can help you to learn more things throught their experiences. I definitely recommend this book, especially if you are just beginning your exploration into CG Lighting. It will give you a first background of knowledge and put you on the right path. ... show more

  • Good Topic for 3D Artists
Format: Paperback
This book has lots of imagery and examples. It's full color too. I haven't read the whole book yet. ADHD strike again. But what I have is pretty good and insightful.

  • To the point
The books is thorough and to the point. I like they spoke about the artistic side of lighing. The interviews were my best part. I had great time understanding what senior artists look for in a lighing artist. The only thing that I did not like was that in small part of the images, there were bad quality text that I could not read. I also whish they talked about lighing in video games and how it is directed. but I think this book focuses on cinematics and that is totally fine. Overall, this book is a must read for every lighting artist. ... show more

  • Book Review!
Format: Paperback
The Lighting For Animation: The Art of Visual Storytelling is a visually and intellectually compelling book that dives into the rich world of lighting for animated films, and gives a very clear understanding of how things are like behind the scenes, and how to become one yourself! The fundamentals are absolutely made clear, and emphasized throughout the book, with a strong artistic focus as well as diving into the technical details as well. You can find a dozen technical books about how to learn software, but what you can't find as frequently is a clear fundamental structure for how to develop an artistic eye and become a lighting artist yourself. I absolutely loved this book and you can clearly tell a lot of time was put into it. ... show more

  • I wish I'd had this book when I was starting out in animation
Format: Paperback
Wow. I wish I'd had this book when I was starting out in computer animation. The authors explain some complicated/advanced principles with incredible clarity. The writing style is conversational yet technical. Reading it, I never felt bored or confused. It's renewed my enthusiasm for digital lighting and for creating animation in general. An absolute must-have for anyone planning to start a career in digital lighting, and also anyone who is interested in how studios like Pixar, Dreamworks, and Blue Sky create such beautiful imagery. ... show more

  • For animators learning about lighting-not lighting designers learning about animation.
Format: Paperback
I do wish this had a software component. I'm going a bit backwards in learning. I am a trained lighting designer trying to learn about animation, but this book is really for trained animators trying to learn more about lighting. It's an interesting book with a lot of very intelligent and well thought out insight/ content for people who don't know much about light and how to properly use it. However, it's not what I personally needed. -I would be really happy for suggestions for people that do live work that are interested in getting involved in the animation industry. ... show more

  • Great introduction and more…
Format: Paperback
One of the best books I have read in the past three decades about CG light. The interviews are wonderful. Certainly a suggestion for all my students.
