Description

The purpose of this book is to explain the conversion of a typical 23” or 28” electric kiln to a TDI propane gas fueled downdraft kiln. The book provides a detailed description of the theory, construction process, parts required with sources, and the basic tools needed. The idea is to promote at-home or small studio reduction firings that can produce very reliable and repeatable results. For those who want to continue exploring and learning in an environment of less certainty, reduction firing can be a fun path. Reduction firing requires gaining experience with firing schedules, reduction techniques, and glazes – commercially available or your own mixing. This Third Revised Edition published November 2023. • An Important Addition
This book shows you step by step how to convert an old electric kiln into a "Thermal Draft Induction" downdraft gas kiln. It is an ingenious design, and professional quality work is being produced in these kilns. There is a Facebook Group where questions can be asked and answered. I have been a potter for over 50 years and feel like this is an important addition to the literature on kilns. For someone on a tight budget, a young person just getting started, this book is a true gift. ... show more

  • Thorough and informative, easy to read
This book is very detailed and informative with clear, step-by-step instructions and written in laymen’s terms, which is a relief and enjoyable read compared to all those dry, technical kiln books that are out there. I’ve yet to build this kind of kiln but I know the book will come in handy one day and I highly recommend it to beginners and those interested in upcycling/converting old electric kilns to propane. ... show more

  • All the info you need to build a gas kiln for a small studio
For anyone with a familiarity with firing kilns and a desire to own a downdraft gas kiln to do reduction firing in a small studio, this is a treasure. I don't have the space or financial resources for a big ole gas kiln. I have constructed various kilns (test, small downdraft gas but mostly various raku) over the past 50 years, but I have yearned for a small gas kiln to do high fire reduction. Fortunately, I had access to a couple of old cast-off kilns - 23 inchers - and the background/familiarity with the materials and the concepts of kiln repair and kiln building. Currently in the process of putting this together. Having watched a variety of videos and the outcome of these small kilns, and armed with this lovely volume that provides all of the details that would even suffice for one without kiln building experience, I feel ready to put together a kiln that - while it may not completely mirror the one in the book - will likely provide me with the joy of once again doing high fire reduction pottery in a gas downdraft kiln. Kudos to the author. ... show more
