  • Very compact, portable blue light solution
Very high quality bright blue light. I believe this matches the 200 Blue light lux output seen in many experiments. Things that weren't immediately obvious to me: 1. It has an extremely small form factor. The kickstand collapses conveniently into the back, giving this a shape that's basically like a thick tablet. This makes it very easy to pack in, say, a laptop bag or similar. Some light therapy devices are bulky and awkardly shaped, not this one. 2. The USB power port make it very easy to use on the go. You can just connect it to your laptop or a portable battery and power it, no need for some hulking power cord and outlet. The device says it's rated for 1 amp, which basically all modern chargers and ports can accommodate. 3. The timer setting is optional. If you want the light to stay on as long as you want, you can. I like to use mine for several hours in the morning, so it's good that you don't have to cycle it. Not so good: 4. The "low-light" setting feels like it's about 80% the standard level. So you've got "super-bright, pretty-darn bright, and off" as your options. Doesn't bother me as I like the standard, super-bright setting, but if you want lower intensities go elsewhere. 5. As this has no mechanical switches, you aren't going to be able to set this to "on", connect this to an outlet timer and use it to turn on automatically at a specific time as part of a wake-up alarm. Which is a real disappointment. UPDATE: I purchased a second unit January 2021. The model has been updated slightly. It now uses a USB-C type connector in the back instead of a USB micro and features a small SMY logo on the top despite the same model number on the back label. Personally I don't like the SMY logo, but it's small enough in a light font that it's not too bothersome. The light intensity and other elements appear unchanged. UPDATE: July 2022- I continue to use both units with my laptop for around 6 hours a day in the early morning. They can be powered over an unpowered USB hub connected to a laptop, and even run off of a mobile power bank. The older one is slightly more dim than the newer one, but it's really only noticeable compared side to side. These do not have limitless lifespan and after several thousand hours of use would be expected to dim a bit. I don't see this impacting their usefulness for at least a few years. UPDATE: November 2022- Lights continue working well. ISSUE- The USB-C lamp appears to not be able to power off of all kinds of ports. A USB laptop charger (USB-PD) with a type C plug appears not to be able to power this. Also connecting this to a type C port on a Microsoft Edge 2 with a USB C port, either directly, through an unpowered hub or through a usb C to type A dongle does not work, but the USB microlamp can be powered with an adapter USB C to USB micro. I think the USB-C lamp then needs whatever power typically comes out of the type A ports (the fatter wider plugs). This is notable because it makes powering the USB-C lamp on the go slightly more challenging if you are not also using a device like a laptop that has a USB-A plug. Your options to power the USB-C lamp then are: >Have a laptop with a type A port and plug in the lamp directly or through a hub >Carry an ordinary USB A power adapter and plug that in where you have an outlet (easy but you may be in a spot without an outlet or limited outlets) >Hope you're in a place with powered USB-A ports (not uncommon on planes, airports and hotels) >Carry around an external USB battery pack and power the lights off of that (works, but your battery may need to be relatively large to power two of these for a long morning. I believe the devices consume substantially less than the 1A they are rated for, don't recall what it is) ... show more

  • This light has greatly exceeded my expectations!
This lamp highly exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure what I was even getting, however my doctor recommended this product to me, as a means of providing me more energy in the morning. Once I started using the lamp, I still wasn't really sure what would happen. I somewhat intentionally went into it blind, just wanting to experience the lamp for what it was. What I found is that it very subtly improved my mood and kind of helped me be more productive. Regarding mood, I found that after using the lamp for 20-60 minutes I felt a slight euphoria to overall pleasantness later in the day. This was either the same or in addition to the energy boost I got. Almost like having a jolt after eating candy or a caffeinated drink. Regarding productivity, I like to use things in my background when I do work on my computer. For example, I like lighting a scented candle to help me concentrate while writing. I put the lamp next to the candle while working and felt they worked well together to keep me sharp. The candle would smell nice in the moment and the lamp made me feel great after I finished work (even after I turned it off). Usually, I would also be so consumed in my work that I just kept the lamp on up to or a bit over the hour. I'm not sure if that made a difference from the times I kept it on for 20-30 minutes. Technically, all the buttons work well and the layout is simple. There are 2 light settings. I actually just worked with the dimmest setting. I wear contacts/glasses and bright lights generally give me a headache. The dim setting on the lamp was bright enough for me. I like that it's clear on the lamp how long it's been on, but I don't like that the light flashes for each 10-minute segment. I'm distracted easily (which is why I like to focus on a candle or light), so having a constant blinking light could be a bother if you're just looking at the lamp. Typically though, I would just do my work and have the lamp in my periphery so it wasn't that much of a problem. I let quite a few people I know try the lamp out too to get more feedback on the effects. In total, there were 4 of us trying it out at different times. One male in his late 20s, female in late 20's (me), my late 40s mom, and an older woman in her early 60s. We all got positive results. The male was more skeptical in regards to mood, but he did say he had more energy. My mom said something to the effect of, "I can't put my finger on it, but I definitely felt something." Like a change in how she was feeling, for the better. The older woman was glowing afterwards and was almost ready to buy her own. She actually gets into very low moods and has low energy and we both saw a positive change in both qualities after she used it. She said she felt refreshed and overall good. For the developers, I think it would be a cute idea to make the face of the lamp look more like a smile. It already kind of looks like a face (the + and - signs as the eyes and the blinking lights as a mouth), so my mom actually thought it would be cute if the "mouth" was curved to look like a smile :) ... show more

  • Happy I purchased the blue light therapy lamp
Please be sure to follow the instructions on how to use this product. I have used a white therapy box in the past and this blue lamp is much lighter and easier to use. The blue light is a definite improvement and I have found I have more energy and my sleep schedule has improved. I look forward to using this each morning and even if my wake time is earlier or later the results remain stable. The quality, performance and price are all great and I look forward to an easier New England winter. I like the USB port and cable, setup and buttons are very easy to use. ... show more

  • It's okay
I get severe SAD in January and the one given to me by the VA stopped working last year and I haven't gone it to get a new one. It was an extremely high quality, battery powered blue light by GE, I believe. This one is nowhere near as good. For some reason I thought it had a rechargeable battery - it does not. That is my mistake and the rating doesn't reflect that. It is important because it makes this device far less useful. There are two brightness settings. Very bright, and extremely bright. My old GE had about 5 settings for comparison. I haven't got burned by UV light so it seems that it emits only blue light. I wish I had something to measure the wavelength. ... show more

  • Still trying to decide if it's therapy is working.
Have had it a few weeks, and used it pretty consistently since then. We'll see.

  • Light works, timer not so much
The light is nice and bright and I'm using it daily. The timer is poorly engineered and I find it almost unusable. You cannot set the timer until the light is on. Once the light is on, I cannot see the indicator for the timer (you push it 1-3 times to select the time). The switch should be a slide switch so you can set the timer BEFORE turning on the light. Otherwise, it seems to work as advertised. ... show more
