  • My favorite overalls for the money: well made, cheaper than Dickies, and 1/2 the price of Carhartt
Size: 44W x 28L Color: Pecan
I've reached the age where I've pretty much stopped caring what people think about the way I look, what I wear, the sort of car I drive, etc... Well... at least most people, most of the time. So, I like to wear overalls because they're comfortable (no belt!) and durable and they have lots of pockets for stuff. However, it's HARD to find ANY overalls in a physical store these days (at least where I live, in Los Angeles, where they're admittedly not so popular). If you can even find an army/navy store, you're lucky if they have even one brand, and if you happen to not be a super-popular size, you've probably wasted the drive. Thus, I've usually been buying my overalls from thrift stores... bigger ones with a clean, well-organized selection like Blue Iguana on Hollywood Blvd. But even temples to re-use like BI usually have no more than a dozen or two pair, of various brands/sizes/conditions, so there's still a lot of luck involved in finding a decent pair that fits, and they'll still wind up costing you $30+ even used. That's where Amazon comes in of course. Not to disparage our host, but I'm actually not a huge fan of online shopping (or shopping in general), ecommerce, or Mr. Bezos. But I need (OK: I *want*) overalls, so I squelch my distaste for consumerism and buy them here. Carhartts, though well-made, are WAY too expensive and to be honest, I'd feel like a trust-fund Brooklyn tech-bro hipster wearing that label in public here (which is a fault of mine of course, not of the brand). Dickies are a good, more reasonably-priced alternative, and there was a time (back when Sears and K-Mart still had physical stores here in SoCal) when you might actually FIND a pair of Dickies on a store shelf in the right size, but that was a while ago. Which mostly just leaves Liberty men's bib overalls, which are frankly kind of awesome! :-) They're basically just like Dickies more or less, except Liberty overalls have that green zippered pocket across the chest, no matter what color the overalls are. I happen to LIKE that detail, though I suppose you might not. The price is fair for the quality (about $35ish usually, at least in/around my size) and jeez, are they comfortable! As mentioned, I'm too old to care about fashion, so I've even been buying them with a waist size a few inches bigger than absolutely necessary (at least, so far ;-)) and aside from a slight bit of excess baggyness, it hardly matters, plus: they're SO DAMN COMFORTABLE! Did I say that already? My ONLY complaint is the lack of color choices... in my size, it's just denim, duck brown, and grey. Don't get me wrong: I'm *grateful* to have the grey (they're my favorites actually) and some brands don't even have three colors in my size, but I'd buy MORE of these if they came in more colors. They don't come in that blue/white stripey pattern at all (I forget what that's called... something to do with railroads maybe?), and black is not an option in my size. :-( IMO, there should be a rustic, desaturated orange, a darker brown, and two or three greens (say: olive, sage, and forest). If there were, I'd have one of each. At least. Of course, economies of scale and all that, blah, blah, blah... So: just a few colors to choose from (at most). Other than that, Liberty men's bib overalls are highly recommended by me, a noted curmudgeon. -Scott :-) ... show more

  • Sizing is not what you’d expect, be ware of washing
Size: 34W x 28L Color: Rigid Denim
I ordered my standard Jean size, 32x32. They were WAY too long, more like a 36, and the waist was very tight (I don’t have a beer belly). I exchanged for a size shorter in length and a size larger in width, 34x30. They fit great…and then I washed them and they are like high waters now. I know that jeans and clothes shrink after washing but this was drastic. Just a regular cold water wash shrink these lengthwise by about 3-4” which is huge. So I would say order your normal Jean size but go a size up in waist and after a wash they should fit fine. ... show more

  • Good but no banana
Size: 44W x 32L Color: Graphite
Want a pocket on the left leg along with the hammer loop. Pockets on the right leg are too low for convent use. Straps fall off the shoulders from time to time and capture the arms in awkward holds when working overhead. I like the pouches in the front and the position of the side buttons. The pockets are deep inside and in the back which is a plus for me. I keep wire nuts and small fittings in them. I have a bad back and these are my tool pouch. Good, but room for improvement. ... show more

  • For detail-oriented people like me, here's how to pick a size
Size: 36W x 32L Color: Rigid Denim
TLDR; For the waist, buy 4" larger than your normal pant size. (For example, if you wear a 30 in Levis, buy a 34 in these overalls). For the inseam, order a size longer than your normal inseam (if possible) to account for shrinkage. Onto the longer review... These overalls are great, the price is fantastic, and the quality and construction feels like something timeless and straight out of the 1930s. I do question their claim that they are unchanged since 1912, considering that they have two zippers (and zippers didn't really start gaining widespread adoption until a few decades later), but I digress...onto the fit! First of all, these are a rigid, unwashed denim. They will shrink upwards of 3% when washed and dried. As with most garments, shrinkage in the width will usually stretch back out with wear. Shrinkage in the length will not. Therefore, I recommend buying an inseam that is longer than you normally wear (if possible). Shrinkage can be unpredictable, so you might end up with overalls that are too long, but it's easy to get them hemmed or wear them cuffed. That's the easy part. Onto the waist measurement... Vintage clothing used to run true-to-size. If something said it was a 30 waist, it would actually measure 30" in the waist. Over the past few decades, most brands have adopted "vanity sizing". A size 30 in Men's Levis (and most brands) will usually measure 32". A few brands still run true-to-size (like the classic Dickies 874, which is why you usually buy 2 sizes larger in Dickies than you wear in other garments). These overalls, from what I can tell, actually run true-to-size. A size 30 in these overalls will actually measure 30" around the waist. But these aren't pants, and shouldn't fit you tight around the waist like normal pants. you need a little wiggle room for them to be comfortable and hang properly. So you'll want to add an additional 2" to your true waist measurement. In other words: -If you wear a size 30 in Levi's 501 and similar pants that use vanity sizing, then you'll probably want a size 34 in these overalls. -If you wear a size 32 in Dickies 874 and similar pants that run true-to-size, then you'll probably want a size 34 in these overalls. -Alternatively, measure your true waist (around your belly button) with a tailor's measuring tape, add 2" to that, and that is likely the size you'll want to buy. I don't know why companies make it so difficult to determine fit of their garments. Customers are left with a generic size chart that doesn't do anything. As a customer, we need to know the exact measurements of the garment. We need to know how it compares to other brands we're used to. It's also useful to know what size the model is wearing in the photos. Instead, we don't get any of that. We must order multiple sizes online and then return the ones that don't fit. Very wasteful. So hopefully this review helps someone out. ... show more

  • Nice pair of overalls!
Size: 48W x 28L Color: Stonewashed
I first ordered 50x30 my normal size. It was way to large. I returned them and ordered the lower size 48x28. It fit perfectly. Go with one size lower than your normal size. I ordered these because they are made by the same company that I normally order Big Smith. They are less expensive and same quality materials. ... show more
