  • Great beginner piano! Easy to assemble, but awful instructions. Comes with screwdriver.
The media could not be loaded. This review is for the Lexington DP755 88 Keys Beginner Digital Piano Graded Hammer Action Weighted Keys. Overall, the piano seems like a good beginner piano for all ages. It has 88 fully weighted keys. One thing I really like about this device is that it has a built in cover with a music stand. That is such a nice feature to have in a lower budget digital piano. It has 128 polyphony, 40 demo sounds, 8 different piano tones: acoustic grand piano, bright piano, pop piano, lyric piano, harpsichord, electric piano, organ, and string music. It also seems to have lots of features like a metronome, USB port with mp3 capabilities, midi capabilities, recording capabilities etc. It has two headphone sockets (but only comes with one 3.5mm 1/8" female to 6.35mm 1/4" male audio adapter) which is under the left hand back side of the keyboard; not an ideal place. It also has three pedals from left to right: una corda/soft, sostenuto, and sustain/damper (note the info booklet is wrong and says the order is sustain, sostenuto, and then soft). You don't need anything extra (except 4 hands) to put this thing together because it comes with everything you need. Note that I am not an experienced pianist in any way. Build quality and assembly: The piano is made with a thin plastic laminate wood pattern over MDF board, so it's heavy. The holes are pre-drilled, BUT they're covered with the black plastic laminate wood pattern. You have to tilt the pieces to find the holes! Tip: Puncture the holes with the screwdriver before inserting the screws. The information booklet that teaches you how to put together the piano is wrong. The type/amount of screws is very wrong. In the pedal beam, there are 4 long pan head machine type screws already inserted, so you have to unscrew those to screw it to the side panels. Separately in a zip lock bag, it comes with 12 pan head machine like screws and you pretty much use these for everything save for attaching the foot pedal to the side panels. In the baggie is also a small wood dowel, 4 small wood screws, 1 headphone audio adapter, and even a screwdriver. It comes with a power adapter in another box. When pulling the pieces from the box, the larger MDF furniture pieces are all wrapped in what is akin to heavy duty saran wrap. There are only 5 pieces total: 2 side pieces, 1 pedal beam, 1 back piece, and the digital piano itself. Careful, once you remove the digital piano from the plastic, the cover is not locked into the digital piano, so if you turn it upside down, it will open. The MDF is rather sturdy, but be careful with water/liquids touching it or it will get bloated. The plastic laminate is nice because it'll repel water, but is not water proof. We turned the digital piano upside down onto carpet to screw the side pieces onto it first. Then we screwed the foot pedal onto the side panels. Lastly, the back panel, and this is where the installation diagram is wrong (the back panel on the diagram shows a short back panel going between the side panels right beneath the digital piano) the actual back panel is taller and it screws in from the back onto the back edge of the side panels and pedal beam. 6 screws (3 on each side) attach the back panel to the edge of the side panels. Also, there is a top and a bottom to the thin back panel, look carefully and there will be two pre-drilled holes (covered with black laminate) in the middle of the panel. These two holes should orient down toward the pedal beam. These two holes are where you use the sharp wood screws to screw the back panel into the pedal beam (the pedal beam does NOT have predrilled holes for this one). One thing to note is that whatever you're screwing into that is already pre-drilled, there are threaded metal inserts already installed into the MDF for the pan head machine like screws so it is really secure. This is very much appreciated because some low density MDF boards don't hold screws very well. Everything took a total of 10 minutes to put together once we figured it out. Easy to assemble. Dimensions: The assembled digital piano dimensions are just shy of 14 inches deep, 53 and 1/8 inches wide, just shy of 30 inches tall with the cover closed. With the cover open, it is approximately 37 inches tall. The top of the white keys are 28 inches off the floor. Keys, Pedals: The white keys have a slight plastic shine and smooth plastic feel to it. The black keys have a textured feeling to it and is not smooth like the white keys. You can adjust the sound of the piano between strong, medium, and weak and it basically makes the piano louder/softer but in addition to that, you can adjust the volume so full volume with it on strong is quite loud. When you have the volume low or you use headphones, there is a definite thump of key noise if you're pressing hard, so if you want to play with headphones while someone is watching tv, it might be distracting. But that is similar to many other brands of acoustic and digital pianos. There is a definite weighted action on these keys. In a way with the ability to adjust the volume of the keys, you can make it such that you have to press with more force for more sound or less force for same sound. This is akin to having different string tensions on a classical guitar. The three foot pedals work and initially had a plastic cap on them that you have to remove. Tested the pedals out and they seem to work the way they're supposed to. Built in Cover: The built in cover and music stand is held on by metal hinges and seem to work great, no squeaking. They're painted black and match with the piano. I have to say, I really hate dust settling into the keys, so one of my favorite parts of this digital piano is the built in cover. Smells: There is a smell of the MDF board. So if you are sensitive, air it out for a while. Though mine has been sitting in my living room for a week and I can still smell the MDF. Value: I think this is comparable to other non-name brand pianos out there and actually offers a bit more features ie: metronomes, usb functions, midi functions etc in its price range. I was comparing this to the Donner DDP-90 since they both have a built in cover. However, as I write this review, there is a $100 coupon from the manufacturer which makes the piano only $399 which is a great price for a starter piano. Other: The cable from the power adaptor to the plug is about 68-70 inches long. It has two speakers but it doesn't list the wattage anywhere. They are located under the digital piano (back left and back right) and point to the floor. My speakers had some sort of dried glue drips on it, but you can't see it and it doesn't seem to impact the sounds. I included some photos of the piano and the pieces it comes with. Also included C scale so you can hear what this French Dream 5th Generation Sound Source sounds like. (Excuse the loud fan noise!) Hope it can help you make a decision! ... show more

  • Like giving birth: assembly instructions were a pain…but once put together: AWESOME!
I have to say this at the beginning, just to be sure it gets seen: this item is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC in terms of its sound quality and functionality...and it even looks pretty good. In fact, it really, truly pains me to give it four stars – but there is no way getting around its most glaring negative, so let's get that out of the way first: 1) The assembly instructions were bad. If you are an "insert-tab-A-into-slot-B" kind of person, you're already going to be unhappy about the "instructions" provided: there's just one page in the manual which shows an exploded view of all the parts and screws – to be fair, with labels – and you have to use that to put everything together. That wouldn't be too bad...if all the screws and parts actually corresponded to what was on the diagram! For example, the diagram showed a crossbar support for the electric piano's lower frame...but what was really in the carton was a simple back panel instead. This part connects to the lower frame differently from what is shown in the manual…and that resulted in the labeling/listing of screws and their lengths being wrong, too. I had to get a metric ruler, measure the screws, and pretty much figure out on my own how a couple parts of the keyboard frame were meant to be attached. Needless to say, it made for an interesting assembly. 2) There is a second, minor negative regarding the materials. Most people already know that for many purchases with "wood" components these days, what you are getting isn't really natural wood, but rather, plywood or particle-board with a wood (or faux-wood) veneer. Most of the time, this veneer is a very, very thin layer of wood…but for this item, it seems it is more like sticker-veneer, in some spots, at least. It doesn't impact the sturdiness (or really, the overall looks) of the product in any way, but I know this may bother a few people, and that's the only reason that I mention it...in instances like this, I'm OK with such choices by the manufacturer: I would much rather have them lean heavily towards quality of function over style. And now that we're talking about functionality: this thing sounds absolutely AWESOME. The speakers are great, with good volume, and piano notes are reproduced faithfully. The weighted keys function very well in terms of correlating the physicality of striking the keys with the level of volume and sound produced. The pedals also work great; their inclusion was a nice touch. One additional annoyance with the instructions rested with the guide for how to change to different instruments: the manufacturers forgot about those who may still be learning music and they use musical notation to identify which keys to press for which instruments. But here, the keyboard itself also helps, with a guide etched into its surface indicating which keys are for which functions (i.e., this set of keys for tones, this group for menu functions, etc.). And it looks nice, too: I've already gotten a couple of compliments on it from visitors. Overall, I'm very impressed with this item. All the manufacturers have to do is correct their instructions, and this is easily a five-star item. ... show more
