  • Excellent choice for a first guitar kit to build
Color: TL Carnival Red
The kit was well made and everything fit perfectly. It required only the most basic of prep to make the parts ready for assembly. The neck had a little back bow, but was easily straightened with the truss rod. The frets were even and finished ok; only required a little smoothing on the ends and a good polishing to make them exceptional. Neck fit snug, and required no shims or additional adjustment to install. Electronics fit together easily, although there were no included instructions. Finding a schematic online was a piece of cake, and since there are only 3 connections and a ground to worry about it was super easy to figure out. I did choose to line the cavities with copper tape to minimize hum, which added a little time to the build. Since the cavities were unshielded I felt it was a worthwhile use of my time to add the tape before he build. Since I didn't test it out before I shielded it I do not know if it was necessary, but I decided better safe than sorry and I am not disappointed. The tuning machines are "good enough", although that leaves a lot of room for improvement. At this price point they are about what I expected, and they work just fine. At some point I may replace them, but no need at this stage of the game. The nut was cut correctly and the slots were appropriate depths, did not need to change them at all. The nut was not "glued" into place, but a couple of drops of epoxy solved that easily enough. This resulted in a nice instrument. My friend is a performing musician, and he tried it out and was impressed that it cost under $150, and loved the feel of it. He was impressed that the action is very low and there is no buzzing. I too, am impressed with the end result. The ONLY negative thing... I thought the bridge might have been about 5mm too close to the nut, because I could not adjust the saddles back far enough to intonate it. It turns out the saddle was set in the right place, the adjustment screws were just too long! The adjustment screws that arrived with the saddles are 30mm long. When I set the Saddles to 25.5 inches they were almost adjusted IN as far as they would go, and there was no more room to adjust them further back to intonate, even though the springs were barely compressed. I swapped the 30mm screws out for 25mm screws and was able to intonate it just fine (and still have more travel available if I need it, but I doubt I will). I am certain I will upgrade the tuning pegs someday, but they work fine. The pickups are surprisingly hot for single coils, and sound pretty good. The pots are basic, but again, work just fine. The painted finish is exceptional, not a blemish or a bubble anywhere. The neck is matte and smooth; it feels great. The fingerboard is nice, it has a couple little blemishes but is hardly noticeable and after polishing the frets it plays and feels great. I used the strings that came with it for the build, but they are not great. I will upgrade them to D'Addario strings at my first opportunity. This was a great project and resulted in a nice guitar. ... show more

  • Great guitar for the price (Leo Jaymz TL sonic blue)
Color: TL Sonic Blue
The only reason this is not 5 stars: I almost cancelled this order because I had to wait almost a complete month for it to arrive, even though I had a prime membership at the time I ordered it. Decided not to cancel and wait one more week, and it arrived that Friday. It was double boxed for shipping, which turned out to be a good thing since the outer box was beaten up pretty badly, but the inner box was still in good shape, and the kit itself doesn't appear to be damaged in any way. The finish on the body was beautiful. I was impressed, a quick inspection and I saw no imperfections, we'll see how it holds up, but for now, it's great. Neck of the guitar looked great, great frets, good finish, and needed no truss adjustment. I built this thing in about 3 hours. Very straight forward, all of the holes were perfect. The only thing I added that wasn't in the kit already was a lining of copper tape on the inside of all the body cavities. For the pickup wires, I use a piece of plastic straw covered with copper tape to go through the body to the main controls cavity. Other than that, it's a piece of cake. Intonation was a problem on the lower 4 strings (E, A, D, G -- in standard tuning). The bridge for those 4 strings 'bottomed out' and there wasn't enough range to get it intonated. To solve this, I removed the adjustment screws and put 1 or 2 nuts on the screw to act as spacers, then re-installed it. Problem solved. NOTE: The bridge requires adjustment for both string height & intonation. Tip: adjust the string height first, then intonate -- simply asking for problems if you try to do it the other way around. After adjusting it, I played it for about an hour or two, rechecked the settings and they were still good. So, time will tell, but I am super optimistic. I guess I should also note that I'm not sure the tuning pegs will hold up, they're fine now, but the internal mechanism seemed to have some play side to side after installing them, I expected them to be a little more solid, but, it did tune up fine, so, again, time will tell. I would buy it again without hesitation - however, I certainly expect that this little guy will be part of my collection for a very long time. ... show more

  • Better than you expect.
I will start by saying I didn't have a lot of faith in a guitar kit in the $118 range, and anticipated doing some fret leveling, rounding the fret ends, replacing hardware - basically an overhaul. The finish is really quite good, and any imperfections are covered by the pickguard. The neck is a nice tight fit. Assembly was pretty simple. I did not receive the instruction manual, requested one, and never heard back. A point or two off for customer support. However, I did find the instruction series by John Carruthers (a true wizard) on You Tube. The nut was plastic, so I replaced it with bone, and the tailpiece looked like the ones they used to put in Stratocaster Squires, didn't like it, so I switched it out for a Wilkinson (much beefier block) and it dropped right in. I did round the fret ends and fret board, as I always do. After following the four-part Carruthers set-up series, I ended up with probably the best playing guitar I have ever played. No fret leveling. And the pick-ups are really pretty decent (think a cross between Jerry Garcia and Mark Knopfler). I've been playing for over 50 years, and have built several guitars. I really like this one. If you replace the nut, find one that's 6 mm tall; most are about 4.5, and need shimming. ... show more
