Terrific Desk!

This is a great desk. It looks just like the images provided by Amazon. It is substantial and sturdy, and very easy to assemble. You just attach the legs with bolts using the allen wrench provided in the hardware pack. The desk is better than much higher priced products I have seen. I especially like the size, stain color and the drawer pull hardware. A few things to consider if you are buying this desk. First, when you unpack the box, before throwing away all the packing materials check carefully for loose small screws. One of my drawer hardware screws was loose in the box and I almost threw it way. It was easy to just screw it back in on the hinge that lets the drawer face drop down for keyboard access. Second, don't force the box of legs out of the drawer when unpacking them or you will probably damaged the drawer slides. Third, the desk top is particle board covered with vaneer. There is solid hardwood trim along the sides and the front edges but along the back edge there is just a strip of vaneer. The desk is pretty heavy so it gets knocked around during shipping and this unprotected vaneer along the back edge can be easily damaged. My desk arrived with a small chunk of the back edge, particle board and top vaneer broken away. I knew this might happen from other reviews and with a little stain it isn't noticable along the back since I have the unit up against a wall. If you are going to have the back exposed I would recommend that you plan for possibly having to repair minor shipping damage. It would be very easy to patch with wood dough or to attach a strip of small hardwood corner trim stained to match along the back edge. With the low price, great look and sturdy functioning of the desk, it would be a small inconvenience. If like me you are putting it up against a wall, just plan to touch up the back with stain or even those furniture scratch repair pens.

Love the desk, the delivery saga not so much.

This is a great desk for its price point. It's very solid, lovely to look at and easy to put together. There is ample leg height room for medium to long-legged folks. Though the height of the keyboard drawer is fixed, it too is of a very useable height. My only quibble with the desk itself is with the handle hardware on the drawer that flops down with the front lowered when using a keyboard. Other than that there is nothing here not to recommend this desk. However.... the delivery (or lack thereof) and replacement and replacement and damage to original delivery made for a lengthy saga with a semi-happy ending. The short version: UPS miss-delivered and didn't retrieve the desk when told of their mistake. Amazon shipped a replacement, but instead shipped a Leick Corner TV Cart which had to be returned. And a second replacement ordered from a 3rd party Amazon vendor was shipped before I could cancel when the very first order was schlepped over to me by a neighbor from a block away when UPS didn't acknowledge her calls. In the end, the customer service both at Amazon and the 3rd party vendor, CYMAX, were fantastic, I met a great new neighbor, and I have this great desk. What makes this a semi-happy ending is that the desk did suffer some damage in shipping (Amazon did adjust the price because of it) and one of the drawer hinges is broken. It seems from reading other reviews here that that does happen from time to time and I was able to source a replacement hinge on the internet. (UPDATE November 5 2017: The replacement hinge sourced on the internet did not fit. I will contact the manufacturer for a second time to see if they can provide a replacement) (UPDATE November 13 2017: There is a fully happy ending to this saga. Leick sent me a replacement hinge that works perfectly. Also, Old English Scratch Cover was helpful repairing the desk's appearance. I used the "light wood" version and will also try the dark wood version to see if that covers a bit better. Unless something untoward occurs with this desk this will be my last update. I will make some suggestions to the manufacturer on how to improve the packing to prevent this kind of damage from happening, but I stand by my recommendation of this desk) BOTTOM LINE (Finally): I do recommend this desk.

I ordered two of these desks for our home office, we LOVE them. The quality is very good, solid wood table top and legs, entire top of the desk is pre-assembled and only had to attach the legs which was easy. The only reason this review is 4 stars instead of 5 is that both desks arrived with some minor damage. The first desk a chunk of the particle board support structure under the table top (surrounding the drawer) had been broken off. Luckily, it was well above the slides for the drawer and did not affect the drawer function or stability of the desk, and is complete not visible. The second desk one side of the drawer had separated, my husband is handy and simply pulled the drawer out, pulled out the nails and reset the side of the drawer with a little wood glue and put in fresh nails, it is good as new and you can not see any evidence of damage at all. The second desk also had a piece of the particle board support structure under the desk top that split a little bit, this was easily fixed with some wood glue and a clamp holding it for an hour or so. Over all, they look beautiful and function perfect and any of the small damage was all under the desk top and not visible and luckily for us, did not affect the overall structure or function. Pretty much, some kind of damage is likely when ordering heavy furniture and having it shop across the country. I would recommend to anyone who is a little handy and not afraid of making a couple simple fixes.

The three stars are for the structural build quality and the potential for this to a be a budget-friendly stand-out piece in the home, considering the price point. It is not entirely solid wood but the construction is high quality considering the materials used, and it definitely provides the feel and warmth of dark-stained solid wood mission furniture. I believe the four aprons and the larger flat pieces like the table top and drawer bottom are a veneered high grade press-board. The legs appear to be solid wood, though laminated to prevent warping, and the trim around the table top is likely a solid wood as well. However, two corners arrived damaged and this appears to be the result of a combination of mishandling by UPS and insufficient protection from the manufacturer. The box has manufacturer branding and could stand to be a thicker gauge cardboard with stuctural inserts at the corners. This should also be protected by more than 3/4 inch lightweight Styrofoam, considering its weight. I was a bit naive in only opening a small hole in either end of the package when picking up at the UPS location. The package appeared compressed at both ends but when I saw Styrofoam I figured it would be fine, so I left. Upon assembly, I noticed the corners damaged and while on the phone with Amazon, noticed a glaring problem with the stain. It appears the manufacturer left the stain on the top and the edges sit too long before wiping it into the wood. As a result, the shape and locations of the applicator can be seen in about 130 dark spots on the table top and a dark rim around the edge. There is no way to correct this except to sand down the top and trim, stain again, and refinish. This would actually be preferable and less time consuming than returning the piece, but only because I have the tools, supplies and experience to do it myself. The problem with attempting to refinish is that I have no way to confirm visually the thickness of the veneer and I risk sanding through it. All this is to say that if I had a mulligan, I would definitely make sure it is delivered to a UPS customer service center and would check it thoroughly before I ever take it out of their lobby. That way, if there is damage or defect, even if UPS or the manufacturer says you need to take it up with Amazon, as they did in my case, you can have them re-wrap it and you can leave it with UPS to. In this case I received an $80.00 credit from Amazon because I would rather keep it and be unhappy with it at a discount than go through the trouble of a return. Looking at it another way, though, I certainly would not pay the $100.00 (after credit) for the same item I know to be defective and damaged in this manner. This is all kind of a raw deal.

Stylish, Solid Oak Desk with Keyboard tray

I am very pleased!!! It all started when I bought an antique oak bookcase...I wanted to complete the look in setting up my home office. Finding the right looking desk that's modern enough for a computer wasn't easy. So, when I saw this one at a reasonable price and read the reviews I decided to go for it. The claim that it's easy to put together is TRUE!!! Even the drawer was already in place! All I had to do was take the supplied set of screws and washers and tighten with the Allen wrench. All four legs aligned perfectly. Simply turn it over and it's ready! The only reason a 2nd person is needed is that this is a REAL wood desk and weighs more than 60 pounds. So nice!!!
