Previous OS SSD stopped working on me just as I was finishing up a new PC build and before I had a chance to copy some needed files from the old drive to the new one. Turned out the plastic casing around the pins in the data port had fallen out at some point and I could no longer maintain a secure enough connection with the SATA cord to boot up the drive, even after using a clamp to hold it in place. Could have tried gluing the cord in the port, I suppose, but decided to give this a try instead - and it worked! After a couple of tries, I managed to slide the port pins in to the connector on this thing without bending them and it was very secure. After determining that a front case USB didn't have enough juice to power it, I plugged it in to a back port and it was smooth sailing from there. Recovered all the data I needed. I came across a few 2.5" hard drives from some old equipment. I was having to open the side of the laptop and power down to connect one up to the motherboard, but those days are gone. I have one external enclosure to make a drive semi-permanent storage, but the rest I can quickly connect here and plug in to USB and read it, format it, whatever. You don't need a power supply either - it supplies 5v from the USB port. When connected up to a USB 3 port I get over 100MB/sec transfer - WAY better than the 16.5 on the older USB 2. Just use Windows external 'eject' function to shut it down before unplugging to avoid errors. ... show more

Bought this SATA connector to get stuff off an old laptop hard drive. Works great. Was worried that it might not provide enough power through just the USB to power the hard drive after seeing that other connectors required a power source as well. I used this in order to clone my original Hard-drive in my 2012 Macbook onto a Solid State Drive that i replaced it with and it worked perfectly. It connected well through the hard-drive end and easily connected through USB to the laptop in order to transfer everything.

This cable is perfect for plugging up a new SATA SSD, so you can transfer data onto it before you fully install it in your computer. It can't get enough power from the USB connection to power an old electromechanical disk drive, but for a low power SSD it works great. Highly recommended!
