  • 5 Reasons Why I love my Leica Q
I bought this as a treat to myself - my birthday present. When I was a teenager and shooting with negative film and kodachrome slides, I longed to have a Leica but could not afford one. Then much much later, when I could afford one, the digital age arrived and Leicas were really no longer great cameras. But Leica is back! This is an awesome camera. I have owned a number of Nikons and Panasonic cameras - dSLRs and mirrorless. I currently have a Nikon df (full format) with a number of lenses. A friend said to me that once I tried this Leica Q, I might as well wrap up my df and sell it on eBay. That's what he did with his previous favorite camera. 5 Reasons why I love this Q: 1. The photos are stunning - forget the specs and everything. The photos I am getting with this are just beautiful. 2. Speed - most people rate speed as in how fast the camera focuses and shoots when you press the shutter. I think of speed a little differently. I think of speed as measured from the time you decide you want to take the shot, then you have to frame, choose how you want to do it, and then press the shutter to focus and shoot. This is the fastest camera I have owned. This is because all the settings are placed just perfectly - aperture on the lens, manual focus lock on the lens and focus ring, etc. Whether I want to shoot auto or semi auto or manual, I have found this to be the fastest camera I have ever owned. 3. Somehow they got it right - placement of the various controls - I really enjoy handling the camera. This is subjective of course, and I love it. 4. The lens is amazing. Usually if you open up a lens 100% (in this case to f1.7) there is some degradation at the edges of the photo, so on other systems, I try not to open it all the way up to maximum aperture. On this Leica Q, you can truly use it at f1.7 and there is no degradation on the edges of the photo. 5. It is solid - built like a tank. While you do want to take care of this camera because it is expensive, this camera will take abuse and live. I will be taking it on all my trips - hiking etc. After all, the best camera is the one that you have with you. So... now I need to wrap up my df and lenses and sign on to eBay. ... show more

  • Wait till you transfer the photos you take with this to your smart phone or computer
Didn't start to seriously use this camera until my first trip a few weeks ago. Wait till you transfer the photos you take with this to your smart phone or computer. Wow! You'll immediately notice the quality. My other camera is a Canon 5D Mark III, and I don't think I'll ever want to haul that thing on a plane half way across the world again. I also do see a slight bit of a noticeable difference in picture sharpness and color in favor of the Leica. This camera definitely takes the prize. Perfect size, full-frame, and easy to use with superior, top notch picture quality. Didn't have an issue at all with the fixed lens and inability to zoom. Cropping is now my friend. I'm in love! ... show more

  • Remarkable
I was a bit worried about the 28 mm lens focal length, but had no need to. Images are so clear that the camera can be used for quite large digital zooms. Now I really prefer this over my canon 50 mm lens. and the camera is a delight to use. A bit of a sharp learning curve, but then all the dials, etc become second nature. The only picky things are the lack of a decent thumbrest (got a Thumbs-Up from Match Technical, problem solved), the remarkably short battery life, and that the back display has to be either always on or off. On the plus side, all the things in other reviews are true. The super fast focus, great EV, and light weight are standouts. ... show more

  • gets a lot right but also gets a few things really wrong
I’m probably not typical. I do most of my photography with an iPhone and a Sony RX100m3. I have a bunch of old Nikon DSLR gear but I want my photography to revolve around my life not the other way around. As a result, I rarely use the DSLR gear and I also rarely shoot in RAW and rarely do PP. I was intrigued by the Leica Q and in researching, also became interested in the Sony RX1Rm2. The RX100 is my comparison baseline. I know – this is a bit strange of a trio for comparison, but for me they fill the same use scenarios. I prefer wider angles, so the RX1 is at a disadvantage there. As others have pointed out, Leica gets a lot right with the Q. The ergonomics are outstanding from the thumb impression on the back to the brilliant focus ring with the lock into AF or the little click out to MF. I also love the ring to move from normal focus ranges to macro and the manual focus magnification and focus peaking work well. The AF is very fast and the additional option to adjust focus point with the touchscreen is great. Everything is not perfect, however. It's really annoying that the lens and camera body aren't aligned on a plane so that if you set the Q on a flat, hard surface, it wants to tilt forward (due to the weight of the glass at the end of the lens, I assume). I often brace a cam like this in low light or for a longer exposure and it's nearly impossible with the Q. The Sony RX100 and RX1Rii both handle this with no problem. I did a lot of shooting with the RX100, RX1Rii and Q and with the EXIF data hidden, I could pretty easily pick the RX1 out from the 100 and the Q but could often not distinguish the 100 and Q. Now obviously with FF vs 1" there were some DoF differences between the 100 and the Q but in looking at the in focus areas they both shared, I often couldn't tell them apart by IQ. The RX1 really destroyed both of the others in IQ. The other factor I didn’t like with the Q was its almost obsessive tendency to use f/1.7 with everything on full auto. I honestly thought for a couple days that there was a FW bug causing full auto to lock on f/1.7. With FF and f/1.7, you often get too shallow a DoF when shooting animals or people. So I found myself defaulting to aperture priority, which can cause a lot of missed moments in much of the shooting I do. The Q is also significantly bigger than the RX1 which is in turn significantly bigger than the RX100. In real life, the Q appears to be bigger in each of H, W and D than the RX1 which is bigger in all three dimensions than the RX100. The Q is really not pocketable under any definition while the RX100 is pocketable in almost any pocket. The RX1 is “semi-pocketable”, made difficult mainly by its depth. Factoring in all of this plus the $4K+ price, I returned the Q. I just wasn’t sure I would get the value from it, especially with the f/1.7 "lock" issue and the IQ that’s a full generation behind other sensors. ... show more
