  • 5 stars inspite of shortcomings
I am new to reloading, so after much research I opted for this kit. Just seemed like a good way to start out with a single stage press. The press itself is solid, smooth to operate, just follow provided instructions and all should be well. Slip black rubber cap on end of tygon hose, slip hose on nipple at bottom of press, install shield on left side and make sure to install one of the primer thingies and when decapping, all decapped primers go into discard hose. The Lee Autoprime hand primer works quite well, seems a little fragile but once again read provided instructions and all should be well. For me the hand priming tool is the way to go. A wide range of shellholders is included. As for the powder scale, I totaly understand why alot of ppl loath it. I found that placing tray hanger hook towards back side of beam seems to aid scale going back to zero more consistantly. I gave up on locking pin, pushing pin in or pulling pin out seems to vibrate beam and possibly moving zeroing screw. Better have a flashlight handy to read the indications for the 10th grn graduations. Scale can be a pain but once I figured it out it works for verifying powder charges. I do believe scale is accurate. I rezero every so often and keep a close eye on the grn-10th grn sliding counterweight. A RCBS 505 beam scale would be wise upgrade later on. Update 5-20-14 Checked scale with check weights, scale accurate within 1/10th+/- grn. I did upgrade to a RCBS 505 scale. I did not feel a downgrade of review was warranted as the Lee scale functions as advertised. It is just a trade off... ease of use-quality (RCBS) vs finnicky-cheap (Lee) the perfect powder measure actually works. Once the powder charge is dialed in, I found charges to to be very close when checked on scale. Read the instructions as I was using a new Hodgdon CFE pistol powder, a very fine spherical powder, instructions will state that a finite amount of fine powder may dribble from rotating seem in body. I mounted powder measure to some leftover white melanene material from my new cabnets and what little powder leaks from measure is easy to see and just scoop up. Shouldnt be a issue with flake or cylindrical powders. Also comes with a primer pocket cleaner, case lube, 1 bushing and a case trimer that mounts where dies go in. For the price, almost everything is there to get started reloading. Getting extra bushings is highly suggested. I really enjoy my new hobby and with any upgrades later on(turret or progressive press), a single stage press will allways be useful... ... show more

  • Great value
I set this up and was impressed. I was able to load from day one. My daughter sent it to me as a gift along with a die set. I was able to reload some 38 wadcutters immediately. It is a very good quality.

  • Comes with everything you need, minus die set.
This is pretty much everything you need to get started, but you'll need a digital caliper.

  • Good Kit for New Reloaders
I bought this kit to get started in reloading. I am currently only reloading small amounts for .223, .22-250 and .270 so this kit seems to be perfect. So far, I really like the setup and have very few complaints. I have to give Amazon credit too, I ordered the wrong kit by accident (Ordered 50th Anniversary kit insead of the Challenger) and needed to return it. The process was very smooth after talking with a VERY nice customer service rep. I had to pay $11 to ship it back but hey, it was my fault not theirs. I also recommend purchasing the quick change bushings, they are cheap and very handy when doing different calibers. I also recommend buying the Lee Pace Setter 3 die set. they are about $30-35 and include sizing die, crimp die, seating die, powder dipper and shell holder (most companies make you buy shell holders for the ram, but Lee includes them with the die set). Pros: -The kit is priced nicely for someone wanting to get started and includes all the essentials. -Challenger press is simple and very well built. -The powder thrower is a VERY simple and effective setup with stick powders. Instead of crunching through the sticks like most throwers, even expensive ones do, it has some type of systems that smooths it off instead of breaking the powder which seems to lead to consistancy. My friend who has reloaded for almost 25 years and uses a fancy Lyman was very impressed by the thrower while using stick powder. -Safety Scale-This almost made the Cons list since it is a bit confusing and touchy until you get used to it. The instructions on this leave a bit to be desired so I recommend watching a few videos as well to get the hang of it. -They throw in the Quick Trim trimmer at no extra cost now. It is not the deluxe model that deburrs and what not but will for sure work. You will have to buy caliber specific trimming dies, but if you buy direct from Lee they are only about $11 per caliber which is not too bad. (My dies are being shipped now so I can't really comment on how well the trimmer works, but reviews and videos are mostly positive from what i have seen.) -The hand primer works great and fast. This is the reason I returned the other kit that I ordered by accident, because it came with the auto prime unit which is supposedly a nightmare most of the time. Hand priming also makes you pay more attention to detail when seating the primer. -Lees instructions for each piece, for the most part, are very straight forward and accurate. Cons -Lee gives you the hand trimming unit so you can trim your cases to the proper length, but they do not include the shell holders or pilots for the cases. While I understand that they can't possibly know what caliber everyone needs, they did not make it clear that you had to buy them separate. This is not a big deal since I plan on using the Quick Trim and buying the dies, but just thought I would give a heads up so you know what you are getting. -Although I really like the way the powder thrower works, I do have two issues with it. 1. It is not metal, it is plastic. This is not a big concern because I know a guy that has used his for 10 plus years for stick powder. He says they work great and if they do break, throw it way and buy another cause they are cheap to buy. 2. The charging drum will leak with spherical powder when you throw the charge. This can lead to charges being slightly off (not enough to be unsafe) and it makes a mess. So far I havent many cons but something may come up as I use it more. All you need to buy separate are dies, powder, bullets, primers and brass if you don't have it. I would recommend this kit to anyone on a budget wanting to start reloading. I will update with any information, good or bad, as I continue using the kit. Thanks and good luck! ... show more

  • Simply The Best Place to Start Out Learning to Reload! Lee Products are Great!!
This is an excellent starter kit to began your reloading adventure! Hands down, don't let anyone tell you different, Lee's products are well engineered. The perfect powder measure is amazing on how accurate it is. The hand primer works well. The powder scale is accurate and easy to use. There are plenty of good YouTube videos to help you along using this product. Warranty with Lee is fast and easy. I have had a decapper pin fail and the primer unit break, my fault, I took a photo of the damaged items, emailed to Lee tech support, and within a day new items were on their way too me. Keep in mind that the kit is fairly complete. It does require dies for the round you plan to load, the proper powder, primers, bullets, and the cases. You should also have a good reloading manual or even more than one. I have three! Loading data can be found on the web too. I have thousands of round reloaded with this kit, and I enjoy using it. Reloading can save you money, however, for me, I don't much more shooting, so I'm spending about the same money, but shooting way more. ... show more
