  • Sharp and Handy
As an Emergency Room nurse, the Leatherman Raptor Rescue shears have proven to be an outstanding tool in fast-paced, high-stress situations. These are far more than standard trauma shears, they’re built for real emergency use. The cutting power is excellent, slicing through thick clothing, denim, boots, and bandages quickly and safely without risking patient injury. The additional tools, strap cutter, oxygen tank wrench, ring cutter, and carbide glass breaker, are incredibly practical and eliminate the need to carry multiple tools during a code or trauma activation. They fold compactly and fit securely in the included utility holster, which is ideal for daily carry on a belt or bag. Build quality is top-tier, as expected from Leatherman. Overall, the Leatherman Raptor Rescue shears are a professional-grade tool that’s absolutely worth it for ER nurses and first responders. Reliable, versatile, and built for real emergencies, these shears belong in any serious clinical setup. ... show more

  • After 35 Years, The Best Trauma Shear Cutting Action I've Ever Seen
Absolutely incredible. At first, I was hesitant to buy this pricey item in that, with 35 years experience in using Trauma Shears, I imagined it was just another player late in the game producing a featureless but steadfast money making item of the rescue world. Given all the Leatherman's type of "Swiss Army" features, I first thought it to be first aider's belt trinket, attractive only to rescue wannabees... I was wrong. After using this thing just once, I was immediately stunned by how frighteningly powerful these shears are. Yes, regular trauma shears are great in that, if you hold them at just the right angle and there is just the right tension on the cloth; one can effortlessly slide the blade of the shears across the material and make an impressively long cut. But the problem with this technique is that once the material bunches or folds up in an uncooperative way that counters the "perfect" angle, the blade cutting action comes to a grinding halt and one needs to employ the scissoring action of the shears. It is at this point that common shears fail and the Raptor shines. I was cutting through one patient's shirt and it had gathered up; anticipating at least several furious passes to break through the mass of coiled fabric I was stunned when it was done with two simple snips. The Leatherman literally took HUGE bites and never slipped or choked on the cloth. Curiously intrigued by this, I purposely repeated the same type of cutting action by grabbing a section of the patient's pants, pulling them down to just above the knee (where an IO line was already placed); the material was now gathered into a miniature log of fabric wet with saline in my hand; Snip, snip, snip... done! Another caregiver (who was attending the code alongside with me) witnessed approvingly of the ease of the Raptor's cut by saying out loud, "...damn, that thing is sharp." Afterwards, I closely examined the blades on the Raptor and found them to be heavier and thicker than regular shear blades; one side is also tightly serrated which I suppose allowed it to dig into the material and not slip at all. Nicely done. The inclusion of the Strap Cutter, Ring Cutter, Glass Punch and O2 Wrench Key, along the the Non Slip Holster makes this a very versatile "must have" on any rescue worker's belt. The only down side is the many moving parts of the folding action, which necessitates tremendously tedious attention and care in cleaning. If heavily contaminated with blood or body fluids, I would recommend first bagging the item if you need to travel, and at your earliest opportunity, rinsing the thing in plain water. Thereafter a complete immersion and soaking in a disinfectant bath while working the actions of the various mechanical parts is in order, to ensure a thorough cleaning. There are also two spring action buttons (one on either side, which allows the shear to fold into itself) which may entrap infectious material that is almost impossible to clean unless one uses an autoclave. Once disinfected, thoroughly dry the item before replacement back into the holster. BTW, the Non Slip Holster is exactly that. The Raptor can even be held upside down in the directionally adjustable holster and it will not fall out. Overall, in it's primary function, that of cutting through clothes in an emergency situation, this is the best I've seen after a lifetime of emergency care. Easy Five Stars. ... show more

  • Bought for EMT school
I bought these for EMT school. Only buy these if you plan on using them every day. They are EXTREMELY versatile. Throughout school I got a lot of use out of the oxygen tank wrench. Actually, that's really the only time I used them except once during my clinical shift. Since I went to college right after I graduated, I didn't get hired and they are now currently gathering dust (and rust) in my top dresser drawer. If you're like me and you are looking for something to get you through a 4 month program, go with something cheap and disosable. These are professional grade shears and can only be used as such. That being said, I loved using these and got a lot of use out of them when I did. They cut through an unresponsive patient's clothes like butter. Multiple people during school referred to them as "batman scissors". They have any tool an EMS worker could want. My only complaint is that they are rusting after 1 use, but that it probably my fault for not oiling or maintaining them while they gathered dust in my dresser. ... show more

  • Worth the extra money compared to the knockoffs
Worth it over the cheaper knockoffs. Many EMT coworkers of mine have off brand versions of these and bemoan the build quality. One of them sliced her finger badly because the seatbelt cutter tool didn’t have a safety retention button. Glad I paid the extra money for the real thing. Very high quality and useful product. ... show more

  • Way better than expected
To begin with, I have always been a fan of Leatherman tools. My first original Leatherman tool purchase was when I was in the US Army as an Infantryman in 1987. Whether in garrison, training in the field or my deployment to the first Persian Gulf War, I had it with me until it finally was too far gone to be salvageable. I had the tool for about 20 years… Since then, I have purchased roughly a dozen different types of Leatherman tools over the years. Some were great, some not so great, but this Raptor Shears is a Grand Slam! I’m retired federal law enforcement and I always had a couple of trauma shears with me out in the field. One on my person attached via molle loops and the other within the trauma medical kit in my vehicle. Those were agency issued so never thought about “upgrading” to the Raptor and couldn’t justify the $100 price point when other good quality medical grade shears were third of the market price. I wish now that I did, because the Raptor is not only a multitasker, it’s pretty versatile. It is a solid tool and with the holster it comes with, you can holster it in the folded or deployed extended position. This would have been extremely handy on my tactical ballistic vest or gun platform belt. I like it so much, I will be purchasing a few more for placement in all my vehicles first aid kits and gifting one to my brother in law who’s a police officer. I also used trauma shears for cutting off police grade zip-cuffs from multiple arrestees during large multi agency operations, so I’m certain he’ll appreciate them…the seat belt cutter and window breaker is definitely something that would be use with the amount of traffic accidents he responds to throughout the year. ... show more
