  • Best educational gadget for your kids!
I decided to invest in two leappads for my kids (boy, 2.5, and girl, almost 4) because we were going to take a long road trip. I am a teacher and have had an iPad for many years, and have been on committess trying to use iPads in the classroom. I was pretty familiar with apps for kids with iPads. As an educator I can tell you that the LeapPad apps have my approval 100%! The leappads are way better than an iPad or a tablet for my kids. First, tablets are expensive and not kid-proof. I don't worry when my kids have sticky fingers or step on their leappad. They are designed for kids! Second, as mentioned, the LeapPad apps are VERY purposfully designed for educating kids on different areas. Educational apps on iPads just are not as good of quality, and it takes a long time to even find a decent one. With the Leappad apps, you can target reading with reading games and interactive eBooks, mathematics with cooking games, and all sorts of fun games for other areas of learning. I was worried that my 2.5 year old would be too young to manipulate a leappad and to enjoy it, but he loves his leappad and played it for many hours while we were on the road! Be aware that the apps cost extra money. I recommend browsing the app store online to see prices. The "expensive" leappad apps are worth it in my opinion, because I can buy one app electronically and use it on both leappads. In addition, the app store always has sales, plus there are codes for getting additional money off, plus you can buy the Leappad gift card on Amazon and get at least a few dollars free. Because of this, the amazing apps are definitely affordable. The cons for the leappad are that I would prefer that they included more storage space. The OS takes up about 1GB. I would be buying way more apps if I didn't worry about space. So, LeapFrog, if you read this, think about including more space for your customers for free, and make your money on the apps! The other bad thing I have noticed is that from time to time my kids' leappads will have a glitch which affects the sound, so they have to power off to fix it. There are other minor preference things, like the music that automatically is on when the kids power up, but I can live with that. I still love it! ... show more

  • but it is GREAT! I bought 2 of these as birthday gifts ...
I don't have anything else to compare this too, but it is GREAT! I bought 2 of these as birthday gifts for my twin daughters turning 3 years old. I was just getting tired of them always wanting my phone or tablet to play games. I haven't bought many games for it yet because they are still having fun with the apps that are included. the screen is clear and colors are vibrant, although the camera does not take crisp pics, but the girls don't mind at all. when you hook up the wifi, you get access to a bunch of kid friendly games videos, etc.from the internet. my children love this feature. you are not able to download apps such as Sprout, NickJr, ABC Mouse, or others like that, so they still use my phone or tablet for those. ... show more

  • Might be THE favorite gift for the little one
Bought this as a gift for my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter, who loves anything electronic, especially cell phones. She loves it! Although the age range of this LeapPad3 is age 3, our little one seems a bit advanced, for instance intuitively knowing how to use her fingers to scroll through photos on a phone at 18 months. A little scary, but I think kids are hardwired for this stuff these days. This is my first purchase of an electronic toy of this type and I don't think I would classify it as a "toy." More like a training tablet. The LeapPad3 comes with a stylus, which is attached with a string and has a slot for safekeeping. This is a very good thing for little ones who may not be attentive to putting things back in their place. If they don't, it will still remain attached. But like any tablet, stylus is not necessary, finger scrolling works just fine on this. Our little one quickly figured out she could do both. She got a little rambunctious with the stylus, but the screen seems to be designed with that in mind and took a little bit of a beating at first with no problem. With just a little set-up by her dad, it was good to go out of the box. Comes with a charger and a USB cable. I did also purchase a game mainly to see how it worked. Again, easy, but at this age, some parental assistance would be necessary. Dad was happy with the parental controls for the device and it easily synced with the wifi at my house, suspect there will be no problem in any hotspot. This might be a favorite gift, which makes me very happy! I will update my initial review after we get some use by our little one. ... show more
