  • Works great
The home I bought recently has crummy soil. Often waterlogged, lots of clay, overgrown icky grass etc. I was told overseeding and fertilizing and adding compost and mulch would help, but before I tried that I should get the lawn aerated. I checked with the local guy in town and I think he’s trying to retire off my one job based on his estimate. It was absurd to say the least (almost $12,000 for approximately 400 square feet). So, enter this tool and my own elbow grease. Let me clarify, the landscape people who told me about the overseeding and aerating, told me that I did not need to pull “plugs” out of the yard, I just needed to make holes to allow a bit of air in and a place for fresh seed and nutrients to go. I basically need to puncture the overgrown mat of grass roots. This tool worked great. It took minutes to put together. I am 5’8 and I find it to be the perfect height for me. My husband is 6’ and he also says it’s comfortable. My son who is 6’4 says it feels like he is using a kids toy because it is very short for him. The spikes are very sharp so it takes no effort to puncture the lawn I found you can either sort of drop it on the lawn or step on the spikes and you get the same puncture. The spikes are very sharp so I highly recommend wearing protective footwear even steel toes if you have them. One slip and these spikes will go right through your tennis shoes or rubber garden boots which means it will go right through your foot as well, just like butter. Took no effort, took me an hour to punch my 400 square feet of lawn really really well and I saved $12,000 to boot. ... show more

  • Manual aeration device for use on thin lawn spots
Our lawn has a few localized bare areas, and it appears unlikely that I can just toss some grass seed on them and expect new growth. The grass is too thin and the ground is compacted. Grass seed and fertilizer tossed on top of hard bare ground isn’t going to want to grow! It’s clear that the ground need to be broken up at least a little bit to get some of the seed a nutrients into the soil. This manual tool gets the job done just by positioning its spikes above a bare spot and stepping on the bottom plate. The spikes help break up surface tension and creates some actual holes for seed, weather and nutrients to combine into. My first test was after an overnight rain, and I used it on an area that a was essentially devoid of grass. The rain helped soften the ground, but the clay content in the soil resulted in some of it sticking to the bottom plate. So it was necessary to scrape that off before continuing use. In areas like this, it’s probably better to aerate when the ground is soft from rain like this than when it’s dried out and hard. The spikes are sharp enough that it should perform well without having to jump up and down on tool to get it to work, It will require going over a given are several times in order to adequately prepare it for seeding, but it should do a pretty good job, and appears to be very sturdy. It ships in a carton in three pieces that easily connect using the supplied bolts and nuts with nylon locknuts. They even supply the tools to accomplish this in the form of an hex key wrench and a stamped open end wrench. And they even include$ a pair of lightweight gloves with non-slip grip! This should get the job done with just a little elbow grease and time. (Green) thumbs up! 👍👍 ... show more

  • As expected
Some assembly is required, but it works basically as you'd expect it to. Maybe a bit heavier than one would guess but that makes it easier to use since it does take a bit of force to push down into soil depending on your type of dirt/clay. The spikes seem sturdy enough but time will tell. Overall, a decent tool. ... show more

  • Easy to use and sturdy tool
The media could not be loaded. The aerator is simple enough to assemble (just use your own tools -- the provided tools are not that great), and once assembled, I found it to be very sturdy and a well-made tool. As you can see from the pics, the spikes are 2 inches long. They will go into the ground a decent distance to get into the roots. They are like a nail, so you won't have a yard full of plugs like the large, roller-type aerators. As you can see from the video and pics, it's going to take some time. It took me almost an hour to do my front yard and about 90 minutes to do my back yard. The main thing I had to watch was my sprinkler lines. They are usually about 3-4 inches underground, but I wanted to make sure I didn't puncture a line. So know where your lines are. The yard where we moved has been fairly neglected. It has a sprinkler system, but it has not been used. I have been fertilizing and feeding my lawn. It's a bermuda grass lawn, but it not thick and lush as it should be. I was anxious to get the aerator to begin getting my lawn into shape. Other care, nitrogen, and plenty of sun and water should have my lawn moving in the right direction. Overall, a nice sturdy tool. I'm glad I have it on hand, rather than renting a roller. ... show more

  • Very good quality easy to use.
This is a sturdy tool with powder coated steel. Yet it is light and easy to use with the footplate. The footplate is easy and steady to keep balance secure. It feels very light weight but it does do the job. I had no clogging or sticking when using. I appreciated the padded handle cover and gloves included immensely. Great tool to get your lawn in order. Adjustable size and good value for the money. ... show more

  • Nice handle easy to use
This design allows for more control over the aerator. The grips on the handle make it easy to hold. The gloves are good enough but I prefer my usual garden gloves.

  • Solidly constructed aerator.
The tool itself is pretty heavy duty and well made for its purpose. It's comfortable to hold an easy to use. If I had any constructive criticism, it wouldn't be on materials or workmanship, it would be the choice of spike length. They are just over 2 in long, as described in the ad, so you really can't fairly complain but this is fairly short for accomplishing its purpose. Spiking is not as effective as coring, and short spiking is less effective than longer spiking. So this will do what it's designed to do the only question is how effective it will be at aerating your lawn. Bottom line is that if this is the length you want then this is a good product. If you prefer longer spikes then this is not for you. I hope this helps. Thanks for reading and liking. ... show more
