After cutting the grass as short as possible, I used this to level out the ground a bit to put in a small pool. VERY small. Even so, the ground still had to be level off. After many years of using my aluminum framed landscaping rake for leveling tasks, I decided to try this lawn leveling rake to compare function and results. The tool comes in sections so some assembly is required but the leveling head itself comes folded in half and so is just opened up and bolted together to give you the 30 inch wide head. As this is constructed from steel, it has a lot more weight to it and so does make it ideal for leveling. The curved leading edges make this easy to roll over the ground and it makes fast work of leveling projects. I watched a few videos and some will place bricks on the head to increase the weight and so apply extra force during leveling. The angle iron perimeter construction can help keep bricks or blocks in place if applied. Some technique is required to get good results but this does a good job of leveling and covers a larger area faster than the straight side of my aluminum rake. To a certain degree, you can also use this for tamping down soft areas of ground if you're spreading thicker layers of dirt. The coating on the rake appears to be satisfactory and is holding up well so far but I suspect it will experience some wear over time and so should not be left exposed to the elements or in damp conditions if you want it to last. The only minor issue I could find is that when the head is unfolded for assembly, it doesn’t come together perfectly straight (see photo). It’s not dramatic and some may not even find this to be a big problem but as a leveling tool, I'd expect the main part to be perfectly straight. I've seen other leveling rakes where the head is fully welded so straightness is generally guaranteed. It could probably be corrected by grinding off the high spots but I’m hesitant to cut into the protective coating. I've been very pleased with all other aspects of this tool so I'll only knock off one star for the head assembly design. At the current price of $53.99, this gets 4 stars.

This leveling rake is great for numerous landscaping chores. I have been using it to set a level base in preparation for landscaping. It works much better than a regular rake when working with things like dirt, aggregate or base rock because the leveling rake is heavier and more rigid than the standard rake. The 30 " head also helps leveling everything out and eliminating the undulations. An unexpected surprise is that the rake stores in a package about half the size of rake head. It was folded down during shipping but that hinge makes for the ability to also store the rake that way. You do have to undo a couple of bolts but I don't use this tool that much so I appreciate the space savings.

I've been working on trying to level out some spots in my lawn this summer using sand and a 2x4. While it can work, these lawn rakes are really the way to go. This particular one is made of lighter steel than some but still substantial enough to do the job just fine. However, there are just a couple of items you need to be aware of. First, when they advertise a folding, space saving design, they mostly mean for shipping purposes. Once assembled, to fold the rake face back to the way it first arrived, you will need to remove the hinge piece for your handle. Since it is bolted in place and held with a nylon nut, it's probably not something you're going to want to install and remove repeatedly. You will also need to remove a pair of smaller bolts that also hold the rake face together. In either case it's not impossible, just not necessarily practical. Second, the handle is not what I would call thick tubing. It is fairly thin walled steel tube that comes with a number of varying lengths that you can assemble to change the overall handle length. It's also covered with paint that gives it a "hammered" or "crinkle" look that seems to come off very easily (actually, the entire rake uses this paint). I should mention that, so far, I have not had any problems with this handle so I don't mean to imply it doesn't work, just something to be aware of. To be honest, in my opinion, neither of these concerns is a deal breaker. I don't plan to disassemble and fold my rake for "space saving". Instead, I'll just hang it on the wall in the garage as-is. As far as the handle goes, I'll use it until it becomes questionable. At that point, I'll buy an inexpensive wooden replacement and keep going. The rake itself, despite it being bolted together, seems to work well and, so far, I've been happy with it. If I ever have trouble with it separating, I'll either throw some loctite on the bolts or just break out the welder and permanently fix the issue. Overall, I'm happy with this rake and feel it does what it is supposed to.

Lawn leveling is a great thing to do for those interested in achieving a better level for reel mowing. If you wan to cut a lawn super short then you need to level out the soil under your grass. this rake is a great way to get the job done. 1. The first thing you need to do is cut the lawn super short and bag out all the debris. (under 1 inch) 2. order some masonry sand and have it delivered to your property. You want around 1/2 inch of coverage to topdress the lawn. 3. using a wheel barrow, drop your sand all around the lawn. 4. Use a shovel to cast the piles out into the grass. 5. Use this leveling rake to push the sand into low spots and scrape the sand off the high spots. The way this rake is constructed allows the sand to fall between the horizontal ribs of the rake. It takes some work but this rake will give you the results you are looking for when getting that fine grade finish with your lawn leveling.
