I have an area in my front lawn that is surrounded by sidewalks and street, so it bakes in summer heat. Most annoyingly, as advised by the homeowner across the street, the upstairs windows on his house reflect the morning sun onto that same area of lawn. I have hired services to aerate and thatch the lawn; no improvement. I have tried piercing the area with a pitchfork, to no avail. But these Gunite Lawn Aerator shoes poked through the thatch and tree roots with a satisfying crunch. I spent about 15 minutes in a 6 ft square area, poking with delight. Now I'm simply waiting to see if the rain will get absorbed, rather than runoff onto the sidewalk. Assembly was simple for this old lady, no missing parts. I don't know why I waited 3 years to buy these.

The spikes help to aerate the lawn. Putting the shoes can be challenging. But these are helpful when you don't have other tools/equipment.

Although spiking your lawn may sound like a good way to aerate your yard, you may in fact be further complicating the problem you are trying to solve, as what in fact you are really doing is further compacting the soil by compressing dirt under the holes made by the spikes! I have tried the large-handle manual spikers (sorta like a shovel with several large prongs instead of a blade) two seasons ago with zero successful results and no improvement in soil compactness (and some pierced shallow pvc sprinkler pipes to boot for the effort!) Really, the recommended technique (albeit expensive or just plain laborious depending on whether you use a machine or manual tool) is to actually aerate by removing core plugs from your soil. That said, if you are compelled for whatever reason to try these shoe-attached contraptions, like similar ones on the market, they are rather ungainly in practice, and downright frustrating when the nuts loosen from the spikes and drop off. Really, this company shoulda spent the few extra cents and substituted nylon-infused lock nuts which will stay locked in place to the spikes. No instructions are included on how to thread the retaining velcro straps and just leave you to figure it out. Not a fan of these spiked shoes but better than nothing perhaps for those tight areas you just can't get at with a proper aerator
