  • Work great - no issues!
I usually don't write reviews, but with all the negatives on this item I felt I had to. Just purchased these to aerate my lawn after a brutal Northeast winter. My grass was matted down real bad and the dirt was hard packed. First off....follow the directions....If you strap these the way they tell you too there is absolutely no way they can come off your feet. Second, some people complained about the nuts coming loose on the spikes, so I put a little thread locker(Loctite or equivalent) on them on initial assembly. My lawn is upwards of 4000 square feet and the straps had no issues and the spikes did not come loose or break at all. As far as usage goes, im 170 pounds. The spikes had no problem going right down all the way. One thing I did do was spray a little coating of wd-40 on the spikes right before using....it keeps the dirt off and helps them sink in better. I walk in a herringbone pattern. don't try and walk like you would normally do. You have to push straight down and pull straight up for these to work. The best way is how I mentioned above. Imagine you have skis on and the tips are pointed away from each other. This makes it easier to balance and easier to walk in. Also, if the spikes don't go all the way in, wait until its raining or just rained to try again, or do the lawn as best you can then try again in a few weeks. Forcing them is a sure fire way to break one......so that's it.....for the price these are unbeatable. work like a charm if you follow the directions and use a little common sense. ... show more

  • Revised post - VERY CHEAP and WILL NOT WORK
Early April 2013 - I was expecting something a little more durable and well put together, however for the price I would say it is worth it. The product comes with 2 peices of plastic, the velcrow and screws and bolts that you have to fasten yourself. This is time consuming and quite a bit frustrating. Had i known, i probably would have spent a little more on something nicer, but again for the price and the purpose it is a fairly good deal. 4/19/2013 Update - After putting the product together and using it for the first time, i felt compelled to update this post. The straps are of the cheapest quality and DO NOT stay on your feet, thus when walking through your yard, it makes for a VERY akward experience and you will be lucky if they stay on your feet. I tried for literally a sold hour to weave the straps in and out of the plastic pieces to try and find a way to get them to stay on tightly without comming lose to no avail. I am a fairly intelligent hands on guy and I am telling you first hand, this product will not work. I wish i had rented or purchased another product of much higher quality. At times, you win when saving money by purchasing a cheaper make shift product, but this unfortunately is not one of them. You would literally be better off taking basic garden tools to try and aerate your yard, trust me. This product is of the cheapest of the cheap and i highly recommend staying away from it. I will be literally throwing it away. It does not even make sense to keep in a garage just in case as it will NEVER work and furthermore if you have children it is an extremely serious hazard as it is a very dangerous product to have in reach. STAY AWAY. I would post this novel unless i truly cared and would hope that others would benefit from my experience as i have benefited from similar posts about products. ... show more

  • A good product, once you adjust to it.
Overall - it works well. It functions as I imagined it would however I won't go into the pros, just the cons - which can be overcome. This way I can offer more advice, help you think through whether you want them, and not simply slam the product becuase it's not "perfect". 1. Each spike is really like a nail that is held in place by a screw. (Insert a nail/spike through a hole, then secure it by threading the screw on from the other side). PROBLEM: The screws can slowly unscrew themselves as you are walking around - so apply some glue first onto the plastic base, then tighten the screw as tight as possible and let it set. The fact that the screws could unscrew themselves leads to problem #2… 2. The plastic base, while seemingly sturdy, is actually a little flimsy under your body weight. So when the screw unscrews itself, that allows the nail/spike to wobble just enough to bend the plastic when stepping on even moderately dry firm dirt – so some of the screws will be at various angles (20 degrees, 30 degrees, etc, and not remain straight up & down.) I noticed as I was walking that my footing was becoming more wobbly – like walking on ice skates. I thought it might be the difference in soil (some places soft and mushy, other places rock hard dry dirt) but it was the nails becoming bent and angled in all sorts of various directions. An option/precautionary measure to help prevent the spikes from bending is to not allow the plastic to bend in the first place. I’m sure the soles of your shoes are soft enough not to provide such resistance, so perhaps custom-fitting very thin wood (you could get at Home Depot) onto the plastic base may work. (Similar concept to placing foam inserts into your shoe – you would be standing on the wood, which in turn is laid down on the plastic base.) 3. The straps – like the plastic base – seem like it would hold well, but after several times of lifting your foot up, the straps may come undone from the resistance of trying to pull the nails up out of the soil. I’m not sure how to improve the straps; maybe replace them with something you can tie (like some type of shoelace design?). I noticed this happened more often as I was walking in the hard dry dirt vs. the soft moist areas, so this may not be a problem with well groomed/cared-for soil. I’ve read that walking in these things can be dangerous – prone to twisting your ankle or tearing a ligament in your knee. True, I could see how that could happen – but walking in these is not a problem if you take short steps and walk by lifting your leg up and down. Do not try to walk with normal strides as if you are wearing golfing shoes. The plastic base is hard, flat, and not designed to bend at the toes – it’s like walking in ski boots, but worse because the spikes imbedded in the ground will not allow you to do a heel-toe-heel-toe type of stride. Rather “stomp” around the yard and your stance will be sturdy enough. One thought: are the spikes long enough to aerate the soil effectively? I don’t know – perhaps they should be a little longer? You could always try to buy longer ones if they exist at a local hardware store. ... show more
