Description

You'd love to get your kids through college debt-free—but your kids aren't getting any scholarships, you haven't saved for college, and you make too much to get government financial aid. Is there still hope? Yes, but you’ll need someone to guide you. In LAUNCH, academic strategist Jeannie Burlowski lays out clear, step-by-step strategies that empower parents to get their kids through high quality, best-fit colleges debt-free—and then directly into jobs they love afterward. Experts rave about LAUNCH:“The checklists at the end of each chapter in this book are fabulous. They’re golden. Well worth the entire price of the book.” —Bob Shorb, former associate dean of admissions and financial aid and director of student aid and family finance, Skidmore College “Students who go through college without career direction are, as Jeannie Burlowski says, ‘like archers who pull the arrow back on the bow string, shoot, and then years later look around for the target.’ This book helps parents set their kids up to take aim early and fire a sure shot, whether that’s at medical school or at some other worthy endeavor.” —Dr. Paul Amble, MD, assistant clinical professor, Yale School of Medicine “I’m a Morgan Stanley wealth management advisor, and after I read this book cover to cover I purchased 30 copies for clients. Every financial advisor needs to know the information in this book. It’s valuable for all types of families—from those that think their income is too high to qualify for aid, to those that worry they'll go into debt paying for college. We utilize this book in our financial planning practice as we guide our clients to the things that matter most in their lives. If you're confused about how FAFSA works or what your kids should contribute, this book will provide clear answers. I was especially impressed with the way the book breaks down the pertinent information with chapters that align with the age of your kid. And the checklists for each chapter allow families to pick and choose the advice that best works for their family. My favorite part of the book is that it is truly a parenting book—with tips and insight for raising strong, thoughtful people who care about improving the world. The focus is on the outcome: your child becoming a successful and happy adult. If you're going to choose a financial advisor, you need to make sure that they know the specific college planning information in this book and are utilizing these ideas in their practice.”—Alix Magner, financial advisor, Morgan Stanley, Minneapolis, MN“I’m a certified financial planner who cares deeply that parents are able to send their kids to college without risking their retirement. You can be sure I’ll be recommending this book every chance I get.” —Mike Branch, CFP, Focus Financial, Minneapolis, MN “High school guidance counselors have a difficult time covering the intricacies of the college admission and financing process in the small amount of time they have to work with a large number of students. This book fills in all the gaps—and more—for parents.” —Josie Robinson, author and former high school guidance and career counselor, White Bear Lake Area High School And here’s what parents like you say about LAUNCH:”We only used a small fraction of the ideas in this book, and our daughter graduated from an excellent private university at age 20 and went straight to her dream job at Disney. Read chapters 1 and 2 when your kid’s in middle school!”—Liz and Tim Weatherhead, Bloomington, MN Read more

  • Great Information and Incredible Passion!
Format: Paperback
I’m a researcher—not a parent. I run a website for parents of teenagers so I wanted to go through this book and determine whether it is suitable to recommend to parents through my website. After reading the book cover-to-cover, I must say that I am blown away. Jeannie Burlowski is like the Einstein of college finances. Seriously. Her day job (the one she works when she’s not writing books and speaking at conferences) is literally coaching college students to set extraordinarily high goals for themselves, and then strategizing to help them figure out the fastest, least expensive way to get to those goals. Her advice to parents is clear: DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to help your kid avoid taking out undergraduate student loans. No matter your income level, if you strategize well enough early on, you can get your teen through four years of undergrad without borrowing a dime. During her 23 years working as an academic strategist, she’s developed some extremely creative strategies to bring the cost of REAL, high quality, high value college down, down, down, down...down to such a bargain basement level that even ordinary families can have it 100% paid for by two – four years after the kid graduates from high school. This is not hard stuff to apply and the benefits are astronomical. For example, teens often hear this about AP classes: “If you do well on the test at the end of an AP class, you’ll get college credit for that subject!”Really? Is that statement really true? In reality, less than half of teens who take an AP test are actually awarded the promised college credit. Jeannie says that there’s a far more effective way to earn college credit in high school, and she covers it on pages 91-96 of this book. Of course, as Jeannie points out, one key to getting some free college tuition money is to land merit aid awards from colleges and universities. Merit aid is free college money that does not ever need to be paid back, and your child can be eligible for it even if you have a million dollars in the bank. The problem is—many parents assume that students have to be geniuses with perfect GPAs and test scores in order to get merit aid. “Not so,” Jeannie says. “The key to getting merit aid is to get your teen started early (in middle school and high school) focusing in on fewer activities than most students do, in greater depth than most students ever have time for.” Commitment and depth to fewer activities can impress admissions offices into offering these students loads of free money later. Some of the most important stuff is when she gets into the tax steps parents can take to maximize the amount of college aid their children receive. You will NOT want to miss that if you have a teenager at home. I have already recommended this book to numerous parents… ... show more

  • WHY DON'T HIGH SCHOOLS TEACH THIS STUFF?!
Format: Paperback
6.1.22 UPDATE: Oldest daughter has now graduated from Harvard (Extension School) debt-free in 4 years, and because she lived at home and worked part-time at a job that pays well and provides tuition reimbursement, she has a nice bank balance, a great credit rating, and real-world professional experience. She's not sure what next, but it sure is nice that she can plan her next moves without having to worry about school debt. Thank you Jeannie!! 7.30.18 UPDATE (because I bought a second book for a friend): Success! Daughter graduated from high school with her AA degree and will be going to Harvard Extension school. First semester's tuition? $3700 minus the $1000 scholarship she earned through her high school, and with a plan to graduate DEBT FREE in 3 years with a major in Business and a double minor in Biology and Chemistry. If it weren't for Jeannie and her book, I would never have known that it was possible to look for ways to graduate from college debt free, nor would I have understood the impact college debt has on our young people and how important it is to search this path out. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This thought keeps me up at night: My kid graduates from college $100,000+ in debt and then either decides she doesn't like her chosen career (more school! more debt!) or can't make enough money in her chosen career to pay off the debt. What if she has to default on her loans? What if we cosigned on those loans? What of she marries someone who is also in that kind of debt?! Thank goodness for this book!! Step by step instructions on helping your child to discover "what they want to be when they grow up";, picking the best college to get there, and getting through college debt free. We are getting a late start (1 junior and 2 freshmen in high school), so I am kind of reading it out of order, but still super-easy to understand and to skim to the info I need. Last night as I sat with my oldest, I was literally nudging her with excitement with each revelation on how to narrow down the college choices from the 7000+ available in the US to a manageable and well-fitting 10-20, which schools and financial aid forms to avoid, questions to ask - and get answers in writing - of admission advisers, and more. Next, we'll go back a few chapters to get the younger ones in the loop earlier. Still a big job, but without this book I wouldn't have known where to even start. ... show more

  • GUIDE OF ALL GUIDES TO HELP YOU & YOUR CHILD UNTANGLE THE COLLEGE PROCESS, GET ON A PATH TO PRODUCTIVITY & SUCCESS- DEBT FREE
Format: Paperback
As a young mother, the last thing I was thinking of when I had my child was how I would pay for his college. My husband and I were merely trying to survive. On top of that I grew up in another country, where the process was very different and the costs were not as astronomical. To say that I was uninformed was a gross understatement! LOOK NO MORE! This is the ultimate handbook. I sincerely prayed for an answer and upon my google search, I found this treasure. This guide is a meticulously written PLAN of action. Answering the many “what if’s” that someone unaware or VERY aware faces. It contains valuable information on the process a parent should be following when taking that first step all through the last steps on the path toward college. It crunches through the thought process of a parent but provides answers in what you should do and at what time. This guide is not only beneficial to someone who may be on the lower income bracket but WILL be beneficial to someone that the government may claim to be “rich”. The author is so well versed in how the process works that even someone who is making up to 200K a year WILL benefit from the ethical and practical ways of assisting your child through college DEBT FREE! The guide is also vastly informative on how to allow your child to find their path, continue with it and execute the plan. It is an encouraging book that provides solid information as well as links on where to find updates and referrals of services that a parent can choose to greatly benefit from. I am so thankful to be able to find this resource as my son is already a Senior. I will benefit regardless of my oldest son’s timeline because I have two more that will be facing college. You better believe I am signed up for Jeannie’s newsletter and have become a huge supporter of her ministry as well as an advocate for this book. If you have been looking at your child’s high school completely daunted by how you will afford to place them in an institution that they deserve and worked hard to be in, I urge you to LOOK NO MORE. Perhaps your child may be interested in a vocational or alternative education, this applies to you too! If you have found yourself talking to a school counselor looking everywhere for the right answers, please do yourself a favor and INVEST in this invaluable information. School counselors are at times so busy, and some are just not an expert in the field of college to be able to give this kind of information. After reading, I truly feel that I have benefited from someone who is an expert willing to share her knowledge and on top of that did so in the most thoughtful and practical timeline. I am beyond impressed but most importantly I am truly so grateful to have found real GUIDANCE. ... show more

  • overall this is an informative book and I have recommended it to friends
Format: Paperback
While written with too many absolutes when most of the time it is more of an opinion, overall this is an informative book and I have recommended it to friends. I don't like the cheesy contract writing protocol between parent and child... your word should be strong enough... just writing it on paper shouldn't make it more of a promise in our family's opinion. ... show more

  • Best book I found in planning for debt free college with a degree & career your child can thrive in.
Format: Paperback
If you can buy one book to help you understand how to get your child "through college debt free AND into jobs they love," "LAUNCH...." by Jeannie Burlowski is the book you need. I am a grandmother of a high school junior. I thought I was getting a head start this past fall during his Junior year. Now it is December and time is flying. I wasted much time watching zoom meetings and reading websites which led to sales pitches for expensive advising promising to "get your kid into the Ivies". THIS BOOK begins with advice season by season starting in SEVENTH GRADE. After reading information for the junior year (starting on page 205) I went back to the beginning and realized what a difference it would have made to me and to his parents and FOR him if we had begun this book in middle school. Even so, it is helping us now. Wherever you are in college planning, particularly in paying for it, I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • All you need to know in a single book
Format: Paperback
One of the most important aspects of this book is that it is one of the few resources for planning for college that explains one of the best hidden secrets - using CLEP exams to earn college credit by combining high school classes with a little self study. Not all college accept credits earned through CLEP, but choosing one that does will be the best financial decision you can make for college. I have worked with the brightest high school students for 26 years teaching AP US and AP European History and have also taught students of all ability in community college part-time (history, humanities, and French) and have preached many of the topics addressed in this book to students and parents alike. I would also like to see the author add a section on the many certifications available through Coursera. Coursera classes do not result in college credit, but they can substantially raise a student's profile for work and introductory information. Auditing most of the courses is free, and students who complete the homework and quizzes can earn a certificate for very little money. The courses are designed and taught by faculty and individuals in our most prestigious universities. So a student can add a line to a resume like this. Certificate in XXXX from XXX university. Auditing one of these is also an excellent way for a student to find out quickly if a certain academic area is of real interest or not before investing hours and significant funds in actual college courses. If a student is not interested enough to complete a Coursera certificate in a certain field, then that area of study is probably not for him or her. NOTE: I have NO personal connection with Coursera nor do I earn anything from promoting it - just a lot of student success from those who have used it! ... show more

  • Worth Every Penny I Spent...and More!
Format: Paperback
This is a great book! I wished I had it sooner. My son just graduated from high school and I'm just finding out about the book. I've had a hard time putting it down because it just really gives some great practical information. It's easy to read, give some down-to-earth examples to apply the knowledge and really points out a lot of the scenarios parents experience when it comes to planning for college and beyond. Some of these ideas and strategies I had used with my son, so it was a testament to the fact that I was doing something right! We had already decided to begin his college journey with the community college route for the 1st two years and she also talks about this in the book. In any case, I've been recommending this book to others. Glad I found it! Jeannie Burlowski is providing a great service and product to parents through this book! It provides some structure, a way to create a real, actionable plan and helps parents develop a great strategy to getting in college debt-free. As I've said, I've already implemented some of the concepts she mentioned. If you are on the fence about buying it, please don't hesitate! It's well worth it! : ) ... show more

  • My Go-To Guide to College Application and Scholarship Strategy
Format: Paperback
This book is worth its weight in gold! The college process is exhausting, confusing and somehow sneaks up on you. Ms. Burlowski breaks down the process into simple segments following a student from 7th grade through 12th grade and beyond. Each chapter includes a handy check list to keep you organized. Because Launch starts in middle school - it allows you to start your planning process as early as possible - if you choose to. If you prefer to (or as in my case by default have) left it to later in high school to start your planning you can jump into that section easily. The section on completing the FAFSA helped me avoid all of the horror stories I heard from friends. The book is so detailed and so user friendly that we started a parents/student group around it. While this book has many valuable aspects, I think it really shines in two ways: 1) it demystifies the application and scholarship process and 2) it dispels the myth that college educations have to cost a fortune. With both my husband and I graduating with $100,000 in loans each (after 3 years of law school) we are determined to help our kids graduate debt-free. If that sounds like a worth goal this is the book that will get you there! ... show more
