Description

Heartbroken when her traveling-salesman honey throws her over to marry the boss's daughter, nightclub tootsie Ivy Stevens (Joan Crawford) decides to dive off a bridge and into eternity. But a passing Salvation Army officer named Carl (Clark Gable) saves her life...then tries to save her soul. A prime example of the rapid-paced melodramas Hollywood produced in the Pre-Code era, Laughing Sinners features Crawford in a typical role as hip-swinging man bait and Gable in a startlingly atypical role as the good-hearted evangelical. As always, the Gable-Crawford team sizzles. And there's more to enjoy: a top supporting cast - and Crawford in a novelty dance, kicking up her heels as a bearded, elderly farmer!

  • Reformation of a Party Girl
I love this film. Ivy Stevens (Joan Crawford) works as a dancer in a nightclub and has a boyfriend Howard (Neil Hamilton) who is a salesman in and around Cincinnati, Ohio. His train pulls into town every few weeks and they stay together until he goes back out on the road. In the first few scenes Joan is wide-eyed and believes everything "Howdie" tells her about how she's a wonderful girl. After her floor show number, he takes the cowards way out and writes on the back of a menu that he has left town to marry a childhood sweetheart. She is distraught and considers jumping off a bridge when a Salvation Army worker (Clark Gable) stops her from jumping. Ivy is saved and joins the Salvation Army workers as they travel the towns and pray for the sinners. One night, Howard is in town staying at the local hotel and playing cards with his buddies. He meets a salesman played by Guy Kibbee who really steals the show towards the end of the film. As fate would have it, Ivy and the Salvation Army people are staying in the same hotel as Howard and his salesmen chums. Howard sees Ivy praying for sinners at the corner and lures her to his hotel room. She tries to reject this advances, but he is too strong for her and she gives in. I won't give away the end of the film. Total run time is a little over an hour. For comic relief, watch for Roscoe Karnes and Cliff Edwards (Ukulele Ike) as Howard's buddies. ... show more

  • Atonement at its best.
Great early Joan Crawford film, very pretty in blonde shaded hair. The story, corny as it may seem, by today's standards, is a good example of love unrequited, and finding peace of acceptance through atonement, with much love from Clark Gable.

  • Fun classic oldie, but not so great digital transfer.
Fun, period film. Only problem is transfer quality not great. Not the worst, but definitely not remastered. Picture not very sharp and audio can be muffled, especially during scenes with background noise (crowds, music, etc) making dialogue a bit harder to catch. But, if you want to own this film, a watchable DVD, and no other options that I could find at this time. Wish there was a remastered version, or better transfer. I'd buy it. ... show more

  • Crawford is Calculating!
Great 1930s Joan Crawford film! What an actress and I'm screen presence! No special features sadly. These Warner Archive films are a great look at forgotten films but do not have any bonuses other than sometimes a trailer for the film.
