Getting a new computer and transferring everything from your old computer is a modern technological hassle. This is particularly the case for advanced users that have added multiple applications and customization. If you haven't done added much to your old computer, you probably won't benefit as much from this program. It does an excellent job of transferring files you have created, but there are other ways of achieving the same thing, including one built in to Windows. Windows 11 puts many of your library folders (including Documents and Pictures) in OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud. You will have automatic access to those files on a new computer. So what are its benefits? Installation is easy. Its ability to transfer applications is like magic. Without that, you will have to reinstall all your programs by scratch. The people that wrote this program clearly have a deep understanding of the Windows Registry, which is obscure for most of us. What I find particularly amazing that it can transfer applications from earlier versions of Windows to newer versions. I have only had experience with moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, but it claims to do this with much older versions of Windows. So does it have drawbacks? Yes. Programs that require license keys will probably need them again. Be sure to have a copy of them. For many modern programs, you can get them from the software's website. A very, very small proportion of programs will need to be reinstalled. The carryover of customization needs improvement. For example, it doesn't seem to be able to accurately recreate the programs on the Taskbar or the Start Menu. That's surprising to me, because shortcuts for those programs are in special folders that are not easy to find, but given its sophistication, that shouldn't be a problem for PCmover. It also did not carry over my Mouse customizations. I don't know where those are kept, but I would guess the Registry. There are programs that will somehow determine your license numbers. I have found Belarc Advisor, which is free for personal use, helpful, but there are others. Although they are not perfect, they can be very helpful for older programs, including Adobe programs. If you keep your library applications on an external hard drive and intend to simply move those drives to the new computer, you will need to make changes in Windows. I can imagine PCmover identifying these situations and asking what you want done. Depending on the connection between the two computers and number of files, the process can be slow, several hours, but it requires no attention. I have used this program four times, including one where I had PCmover transfer everything to an external hard drive, did a clean reinstall of Windows, and then transferred everything back. I was concerned that this would mess up my clean install, but it didn't. Despite its limitations, I would always use it to move things to a new computer.

I was transferring from an old Windows 7 workstation to a new Windows 10 workstation and needed to move dozens of legacy software programs that were impossible to replace or reinstall and hundreds of gigabytes of data. I had looked at several programs to perform the transfer and settled on this one because of the features and price (I was only going to use it once and I have years of experience in IT). The software was easy to install and use. I read through the instructions and followed the recommended preparation steps. Everything went well and about 95% of the selected programs and data transferred on the first try (I did use the advanced selection rather than the default settings). I ran the process 2 additional times to grab a few stragglers and things I missed. The only issues were the Microsoft Office suite transferred but the product key and registry settings didn't so it needed to be repaired and I ended up upgrading it to a newer version rather than fighting with it. I have found that a couple of minor utility programs didn't transfer even though their shortcuts did but that isn't a deal killer. Overall this program saved me days (maybe weeks) of work and performed as well as I expected.

UPDATE 2026-06-12 DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE if you expect to use it. I purchased it when I had a PC that was flaking out on me, and their licensing kept forcing me to call them to get the software working. Then I gave up on the other PC and got a new one, and again had an issue with using it. (I am creating a transfer file and storing it on media each time.) That PC (current one) had a DIMM module go bad and I was told to send in the entire PC to get it repaired, so I used it again. And again, I am not sending a PC to be repaired with all of my data on it, so of course I reset the operating system before sending it back, so again their software would not work without a call to LapLink. This time, they said that it has been too long since I bought it (not even a year yet). Then they backed down and said it is not the time, but because I used it on too many computers. YOUR TIME AND MONEY IS NOT WORTH THE HASSLES. Get something else such as EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro because LapLink makes it a HORRIBLE experience to use their software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does the product work? Yes. Does the product work well? Yes. My only issue is their licensing/registration. I had a bad computer from overseas that had an M.2 SSD, so that had to go back too. I bought this, created a PCMover file on another SSD that I had, reset the computer and sent it back. When I got another one, I installed PCMover, read the PCMover file from my other SSD and it restored beautifully. Then the replacement computer was bad, so I went through the whole ordeal again but this time, when I went to install PCMover, the first problem is their Azure issue that stopped the download from happening. When I finally got a link from them to the software so I could use it, it came up with the familiar registration screen but this time it told me that I had used all of my licenses! There was nothing that said they were keeping track of licenses, that I need to uninstall to decrement a license counter or anything. So I get on with support again, and a snarky customer service person tells me that they still reserve the right to ask what is going on even though they do not decrement the license count if I had uninstalled the software. He claimed to have reset the license, but it did not work, so I again waited for him and finally he reset the license. He kept telling me to close the software on both computers (hello, restoring from a PCMover file, not using a 40 year-old Laplink cable LOL). I then got instructions telling me to use a Windows Restore Point so that the license will not decrement again. I already told him that I reset the computers and was using only one (the brand new) computer, so their failure to listen AND to not understand how their software is being used made this a huge hassle. I like the software, but the licensing makes it very troublesome.

Did a great job copying files and documents, not quite as good with applications. I used the Laplink USB-USB cable, which speeds up the transfer. Took about 2 hours to move 150GB or so. Not all applications made the switch to the new machine. Brother Labelmaker worked fine, but VMware player doesn't and I may have to reinstall it. Brother Control center for the scanner had to be reinstalled. I installed a new version of Office, so that wasn't an issue. The big open question is Thunderbird, which I haven't tested yet.

For the most part it did a good job of moving my files to my new computer. There were a couple of issues. The first is that of all the programs that I've ordered that transferred over, not one of them worked. The other is Microsoft's one drive system went nuts with this transfer. It attempted to load my entire desktop onto a separate laptop. Finally got that fixed but it was pretty upsetting. Overall I would use this program again because I didn't really have any other good options.

Built two new PC towers to accommodate the mandatory move to Windows 11. Have done this in the past tediously manually moving files and settings. Decided to try 'automating' the migration process this time. After reading reviews of alternatives and exchanging a few questions with their tech support I decided to use this product. Did receive some wrong answers saying I could not connect the two computers over switches in the home network implying I needed to revise patching to route directly within router's ports. Proved not to be true. Went well on first PC. There are a lot of things happening in the background to ensure the right files are transferred for which I give the company credit. Despite the instructions pdf, I still had to make use of the 24 hour tech support chat. Gives a nice summary what was successfully moved and which things were not moved because they don't apply or are not compatible. PC #2 went well on first migration. Unfortunately, there was a Microsoft networking problem within the house (don't get me started on that), that required me to do a second and then third 'clean install' that required me to migrate from the old to new PC multiple times. Definitely do not abandon the prior PC for some months until you are certain of stability. Had to interact with 7x24 again to make those passes. Cooperative although a little tedious in chat to be walking from room to room between the PCs. Although there is a stated time limit for how long the license is valid between the specific pair of PCs, it appears if you have a problem beyond that and need to repeat the transfer, they can reenable the license for new sessions. Do take note that I found Amazon to be the best pricing. Despite being given a 'special offer' for the two licensed I needed if purchased directly from their web site, purchasing through Amazon was significantly better. Having also previously migrated my wife's cousin's PC by hand, I wish I would have sprung for the cost of this app to do that one.

Just purchased a new computer, and always dread the switch from old/new computer, but PC Mover really makes it much easier! All my files transferred over, except for those that were licensed for one laptop (understandably), and move was completed in a minimum amount of time. I did experience one issue, I had forgotten that an old version of PC Mover was on my computer, and when I went to move contents from that computer to the new one, the two weren't speaking to each other. Called their tech support over the weekend, they quickly answered the phone, and asked if I had another version of their product on the old computer. Sure enough, I did. They quickly explained how to update that version so the two could communicate and it was quite easy after that. For those complaining that it moves junk files to new computer; well, I guess you need to remove the files you don't want transferred prior to starting the installation. It tells you it's going to move everything, and that's exactly what it does. Very happy with this product.
