  • A Good Stone
Purchased as I needed a much coarser stone to fix a broken knife edge. If you have the Lansky system already, this will give you a very aggressive stone to fix a broken edge. Used just like your other stones and nicely stores in my case. Nothing fancy, but very effective.

  • The Right Replacement
I have the Lansky sharpening system but use it so often that this particular stone wore out. I ordered this replacement and everything's good as new.

  • removes a lot of metal
This stone is as described: extra coarse. It works as intended and I can quickly fix damaged old blades with lots of chips and uneven wear.

  • The one I needed
About a month ago, I bought the Lansky Standard sharpening system, as I wanted to try it out without spending too much. I was able to sharpen some knives somewhat, but wasn't completely happy. My knives are neglected, as I haven't been very good at sharpening them, and that's frustrating. So I thought maybe I needed the extra coarse stone to really reset the edges. Bingo. I sharpened a very dull Messermeister french knife this morning, which has been abused. The tip is broken off, and it has a couple of notches in the edge. Well, the notches are still there, of course, but as soon as I did 30 strokes on each side with the extra-coarse stone, it was sharp enough to be useful. Surprisingly sharp, in fact. So I followed up with the coarse, medium, and fine, and it's almost shaving sharp. With a little more attention, I think I could shave with it, but it's certainly satisfactory now. This extra-coarse stone made the difference. ... show more

  • Not bad
Not bad you can see it's just a stone glued onto a plastic handle so I'm sure sometimes you might get one that's off, but mine seems good.

  • Good for when heavy use is needed.
I bought a Lansky Kit that didn't include the extra course stone. I realized then that many of the knives that I was sharpening really needed to be more aggressively honed to get started in the sharpening process. Since purchasing the extra course stone, I can re-shape a bad edge quite quickly and end up with a really nice edge after using the other stones in succession. I recommend it if you have a lot of bigger and dull knives. Gets things going in the right direction. ... show more

  • Good buy
The extra-coarse stone was an excellent addition to the Lansky sharpening system. It enables to remove nicks from blades much faster than with a coarse stone, which saves time and effort.
