I already had several keyboards in my studio, including a Korg Kross, Novation Launchkey and a ROLI Seaboard. I also have a couple of dozen virtual synths on my iPad. So I thought I was covered for synth sounds and tools. My 1st synth, back in the 80’s, was the DX7. It was ubiquitous at the time, if you were a keyboard player. So I was immediately curious about the Opsix. It has the same FM architecture (you can even import old DX7 patches to it) but it is so much more! The big breakthrough is the ability control every operator (carriers and modulators) and every algorithm at a granular level using knobs and sliders instead of menus and screens. This gives you a very tactical way to control your sound on multitude of levels, even in live performance. You can actually dial-in and fine-tune almost any sound you can imagine, whether that be for musical or ambient affect. If you have strong need for a sound design tool in your workflow, this is a must have keyboard. I thought I didn’t need another keyboard but I’m very happy that I bought this one.

This synth has completely changed the way I view FM synthesis. Having the immediate hands on control for every operator on the front panel inspires a sense of creativity unlike any other FM synth I’ve ever used. This synth could stand strong against the competition with just the FM capability and user algorithms, but when you take in to account the different modes and waveforms, this synth has easily became one of my favorite instruments. Throw in the different filter models and 3 slot FX (Vox amp modelers, grain shifter, reverbs, and much more) and the possibilities become nearly endless. Did I mention you can stack the effects? (Delay+delay+delay) On a slow sequence or arp and you have amazing rhythms for any track or score. This synth is worth every penny. Extremely satisfied with this purchase.

My experience is with analog synthesizers and this is my first instrument that leverages FM synthesis. The Korg OpSix takes the 6 operator model introduced by the Yamaha DX7 in the 80's and makes it a pleasure to program. The front panel interface and menu design are easy to learn and make it straightforward to create sounds. The quality of sound is top notch. Kudos to Korg for creating an accessible, affordable FM synth.

Isn't it amazing? Yes ... mostly. It sounds great, and it is indeed wonderful to have such great sounds ... if you can successfully manage its UI (which is admittedly more accessible than the DX7 it proposes to emulate/replace) and you don't need more than three octaves for those sounds. Me? I liked it very much -- and didn't mind the shorter keyboard because I only use it when a larger keyboard isn't needed. Isn't it a good deal? Well -- depends when you bought it; prices have fluctuated from $829 to $329 to $549 over the course of the past year. And a sizeable percentage of those sales were flawed by defective parts or functions (all of which were promptly compensated by Korg's excellent customer service department). Me? Well, mine quickly developed a minor issue, and after a couple more months, a major issue (dead screen). Did Korg promptly acknowledge this as a warranty issue? They did. But it did mean coming up with some other way to get through a New Years Eve gig, and will require two trips to a shop that's a 45-minute drive away. Do you want to get one? You might. Me? Well, I'm seriously questioning its reliability, after two issues in the first six months. I hope the warranty repair doesn't take too long -- especially for a $40 part I could probably replace myself. Looking inside, it doesn't look sturdy. I'd recommend taking ginger care of it -- but then, I did that with mine, and look where I am now. I guess the bottom line is: if you buy one, buy it new from a retailer you know will take care of you in the event of an issue.

First off I'll say it does sound very nice, but I already knew that from demos. Otherwise, the opsix feels like a cash grab from Korg. For the price, this thing should have twice the amount of knobs and sliders. I mean, there are analog synths out there at half the price of this with three times the amount of knobs and sliders. It is easier to program than your standard FM, but only marginally. You're still menu diving on a tiny LCD. If this thing truly aimed to be FM-Fun, there would be dedicated knobs for each operator wave type and FM type, for example. The filter and envelope would have its own section. They should have broken out more functionality to the front panel, period. It's not a well thought-out UI. You can't even tell what parameters you have saved when editing a preset. There's no indication on the LCD or front panel. I naively assumed the red and purple LEDs might light up on the sliders to show the levels you have set. It is 2021, after all, and MUCH cheaper midi controllers can do this, for example. And no multimbral? Too bad, it could be an awesome little percussion box with multimbrality. That tiny LCD? In 2021? This is a $450 synth, tops. At $800+ with tax, Korg is taking you for a ride. It's a plastic box with a raspberry pi inside.
