  • My first MPC and I'm in love!!!! WOW! So much power in a compact unit! YES!!!!!
Style: MPC Key 37
This is my first MPC. The work flow is different from what I'm used to (Logic). I've only had it a couple of days and it is a joy to learn. The work flow is very intuitive once you grasp the design. The keybed is high quality and very quiet (for anyone wondering if key noise would be bothersome to a sleeping spouse as you create through headphones in the bedroom late at night ;) The stock sounds that come bundled with the unit are delightfully plentiful and useful. I love the feel of all the knobs, buttons, wheels and touch screen. The sequencer and sounds appear to have all the bases covered very well with plenty of edit options for creating and saving your own preferences. I feel very confident that this is one of my best investments...maybe THE best! I'm not a hip hop or rap fan, so I was a little concerned that I may not be able to create traditional orchestral or new age style music since all of the YouTube videos seem to show it being used for hip hop, rap, etc. But, having reviewed the sounds and making a few test sequences, it appears this will do just about anything you could want. the compact size is a HUGE PLUS for me. I love having a full DAW-like interface in such a small unit WITH KEYS! It's lightweight and easy to move around with. I highly recommend this and I'm expecting I will spend all my time on this while my Roland MC-707, Verselab, Deluge, and Blackbox fall by the wayside. Not having to hook up a keyboard is a big plus! ... show more

  • Best Workstation I’ve owned.
Style: MPC Key 37
I’ve been composing and playing electronic music for over 40 years and gone through a lot of synths, drum machines and workstations in that time. This is the most compact and powerful musical tool I’ve owned. The workflow is simply frictionless and fluid. You can go from quick ideas to fully produced, multitracked songs without losing a beat! Plenty of deep feature and sound reviews available so I won’t do a deep dive but will simply say the MPC is a delightful gem to work with. ... show more

  • Amazing Value DAW/Recording Setup In a Keyboard
Style: MPC Key 37
There is no other product in the market like this! It costs far less than most hardware synths, but destroys ALL of them when it comes to features because it is SO much more than just another keyboard synth. It's like having 8 synths, an 8-track audio recorder, a bunch of samplers, an audio interface, a rack if effects, a MIDI controller and a multitrack sequencer all in one! It can even host a class-compliant audio interface and route tracks to output channels on it as well as record from its inputs. Oh, and it can download new samples and synth presets from Splice over WiFi. The new MPC 3.6 software has made editing much easier and faster now, which was my biggest gripe before with MPC 2 software. You can put a 2 TB SD card in it and have access to millions of samples. I've been producing music for over 30 years and I have TONS of gear. This thing is my favorite standalone piece of all time. Edges out every other keyboard and groovebox when it comes to balancing portability with functionality. Other standalone alternatives all fall short in some way, slowing down the workflow at some point with some terrible bottleneck that wastes too much time. Teenage Engineering takes the cake for compact size and battery life, but fails in having not enough storage capacity and its inability to export multitrack for serious mixing or stem mastering. Elektron boxes are more immediate and are smaller with better build quality, but lack massive sample storage, insert fx and offline audio export. Maschine+ has a better processor and fewer limitations on track counts, but lacks the ability to edit automation and there is no keyboard version. Roland grooveboxes are more lightweight and have great sounds, but terrible tiny screens and too much menu diving. The huge touchscreen on this unit is wonderful and super useful for naming things and selecting controls. You still have real knobs for smooth tweaking. It's amazing what you get for the price! Small enough to take almost anywhere, yet it feels and plays like a real instrument. If I could only have one piece of music equipment, this would be it. The only things it doesn't do very well are arranging and mastering. As nice as it is to use standalone gear, the reality is that no standalone gear can yet arrange or master a track as well as a DAW can. It helps to have a mouse and big screen for arranging, and mastering benefits a ton from real analog gear. Anyway, this thing is just portable enough to sling on your back without causing you pain and it's extremely fun to play. It's all you need to make amazing music in one compact unit you can use on your lap, making composing in the car or on the sofa a joy. There is no built-in battery, but if you want to use it in the park just get a battery with an AC port on it for $50 to $100. For me, the keys are what make this unit far superior to the MPC One+ or even the Live II or III. It's much easier to make great sounding melodies and harmonies with keys vs. pads. But it has pads too for banging out rhythmical parts! The keys have aftertouch! While a laptop is definitely better for arranging a complex song or doing serious mixing and mastering, it's not fun to use a laptop keyboard to play synths or the mouse to automate controls. This thing is hard to beat for composing parts, playing, recording, automation, etc. You can get a song idea quite developed with this before the time comes to move it to a computer for arranging, mixing and mastering. The audio is very high resolution and sounds fantastic. The synth plugins have lots of controls and you can add 4 insert FX per track. You can record smooth automation with the Q-Link knobs and touch screen and the display shows the controls moving. It's built solid and very gig-able too. When I saw this come out in 2024 I was one of the first to buy it. I ended up returning it because I didn't like the software interface. But that's all changed with MPC version 3! I used to get so confused with the complexity of version 2. And while version 3.6 still is an awful lot to wrap your brain around, the new Main Mode and arrange functions go a long way to making this unit easier to use. Only real downside other than lack of mastering capability (no standalone unit has that unless the iPad counts) is the limitations of the arrange mode. Currently you can't zoom out and see more than 32 bars at a time, which means it's basically impossible to look at the big picture of your whole song like you can on a real DAW with a big screen. But it's still way more than you can see on any other standalone unit! Editing the arrangement is also kind of difficult. You should be able to just tap and drag clips around in any track, but you can only do it in one track at a time and only the one currently selected. But I have no doubt that AKAI will keep improving its software for this thing. It's already leaps and bounds ahead of where it was a year ago. This thing is definitely worth the price and it's probably all you need. It's amazing we're at the point now where a $699 keyboard can do so much! ... show more

I love this new addition to my studio setup. I've always wanted an MPC but couldn't afford it and here we are. It comes with so many sounds and so much software out of the box, you really only need headphones to use it. It's super light and portable which is a huge plus for me because I travel alot. I've had it awhile and still getting to know all the features but it's as straight forward as you can get. ... show more
