I utilized the step-by-step video on Amazon's listing of this futon to guide me through an easy installation. Fully-assembled, it's very sturdy and comfortable. Sturdy spring mattress. Three settings (upright, lounge, and bed). Be advised, the boxes are heavy. That's a good indication of a quality item - lots of mass to keep it sturdy and strong - but you will probably want a helping hand when taking the boxes inside (2 boxes - 1 for the frame, 1 for the mattress). I took everything inside and assembled it myself, but I'm a big burly weightlifter. The average guy is going to struggle with the weight of the packages, and handling the heavy mattress once it's unwrapped and expanded inside your house. The assembly hardware is designed so that you won't strip any screws into the wood. Nope. The high-stress points in the frame are secured with metal-into-metal fasteners. As someone who's been frustrated with "assembly required" items with screw holes that strip too easily, I was very happy with this. I highly recommend this futon. My fiancée & I love it! We needed a new couch that wasn’t a hand-me-down from the 70s (lol) & this was great! Being that it’s a futon, if anyone ever stays over at our place it’s so easy to have somewhere for them to sleep! It’s so comfy & soft. & long enough for me to lay down & my legs don’t hang off like our old couch! It’s a lot bigger than I thought, which I love. We have a lot more seating now in our living room. It’s easy to assemble, as long as you take it one step at a time & take your time! It took about 2 hours to build this for my grandma-in-law & I! (When it says it’s required two people to build, it really means it. Get a buddy to help build this thing!) it’s very sturdy too! It’s a little rough for me to switch it back & forth from bed to couch, but you’ve really just gotta put your back into it lolol. 5/5! I love it! ... show more

My futon was fairly easy to assemble. I don't know how it could have been made to make it any easier. I assembled by myself but it really calls for 2 people. The mattress is very comfortable. It seems like a very sturdy piece so far. The only thing I don't like is its not easy to put up into the couch position while it's flat.. and it makes loud noises when it locks into position. It says you need 2 people to put it together but I had no problems putting it together by myself. The hardest part was putting the mattress on, but laying it flat made it manageable with one person. The best part of assembly, though, was that the screws and other hardware came on cardboard trays that not only labelled the parts by part number but also by step number, which made it extremely easy to get the parts you needed for each step. All the boards were labelled with stickers for part numbers and colored dots to show correct orientation when applicable. None of these show when the futon is fully assembled, so you don't have to take them off. Overall I was impressed with how both the design of the futon and how it was packed made assembly as easy as it can possibly be. It's about as comfortable and sturdy as a futon can be, I have no complaints there. It's only been assembled for a day now so I can't speak to how well it will hold up. The moving pieces all use pins to keep the hardware from backing out, so I don't predict any problems caused by manufacture and design. ... show more

The instructions for this were some of the best furniture instructions I've ever seen, plus they have videos to show you what you need to do if you aren't sure based on the written instructions, which is helpful. I almost passed on this item, reading all the reviews about how it takes two people to reset it to a couch, how hard it flops down when making it into a bed, etc. Thank goodness, I followed my instincts! First, it took 1.5 hrs (probably less) to build it myself; needed a helping hand for the last part (putting the platform into the frame). If only IKEA stuff was this simple! As for the complaints listed above, either the reviewers weight 50 lbs, or don't follow instructions. In converting to a couch, all the videos CLEARLY state you put your knee into the hinge area while pulling up on the back. It pops into place perfectly! No need for two people (and yes, that's with the mattress on)! As for converting into a bed, when you pull up on the bottom, you can easily guide it down. Sure, if you let go, it will plop down! The mattress is very comfortable, certainly better than those metal-frame-in-your-back futons! If I have any complaint, it's the "relaxed" angle of the upright position. The frame is not sturdy, and the screws come out no matter how tightly you screw them in. After about a month and a half, the boards cracked all the way through right along the finger joints used by the manufacturer to put boards together. When I bought it, the seller was OJCommerce and it showed a few similarly cracked futons. Now that the seller is BisonOffice, those pictures are gone. When I contacted OJCommerce, they me mentioned contacting the manufacturer, but when I did that, the manufacturer said to contact the Amazon seller. $460 garbage. Update: a few weeks later, and it has split even more, causing it to come apart at a place Kodiak themselves put it together. Absolute garbage, and my first draft of my review magically disappeared drop the product review page. Update 2: Not even 6 months later, and it is completely useless. OJCommerce refuses to refund me, and Kodiak Furniture has stopped responding to my emails. EASILY my worst interaction on Amazon. I now have a heap of wood and a mattress that I cannot use. Kodiak Furniture doesn't even have their own customer support line. I just keep getting routed to some guy named Ernesto's voicemail. ... show more
