  • Really big in size, but it's big on sound as well! Excellent bookshelf speakers for the money!
Well, Let's start it off this way. I was crazy enough to buy these speakers for my computer speakers. When they arrived, I was stunned by the overall size of the speakers. I *almost* wanted to sell them away because of how big these speakers were. Well, at least, until I gave them a shot and used them with my amplifier. For other buyers, do take note - if you have a tiny desk, you'll prolly want to see the RP-150m instead. First of all, take note, these are 'passive' bookshelf speakers, meaning you need a separate amplifier to power these big boys. Since these are bought for my computer speakers, I have connected them to my creative X7 Amplifier. Take note that this tiny amplifier of mine only outputs only 22-27 Watts of power at 8 Ohms - Which is crazy low in power when you consider that these klipsch speakers are rated to 100watts of RMS Power at 8 ohms. I was first taken aback by the efficiency of these speakers - While they are big in size, they don't require much power to actually produce really good sound! They are more efficient than my Creative EMU-XM7 speakers. At 50% volume on my tiny amplifier, it is much too loud for pleasurable listening, and even better, I don't hear any distortion from the speakers. I was initially afraid i might be sending distorted signals to these speakers (and thus risk spoiling them). Thankfully i don't hear any distortion. Truely amazing. Sound wise, these speakers produce really amazing, 5 star sound. Treble is clear and detailed - without coming across harsh like other klipsch products, such as the "The One" Heritage speakers. This may be Probably due to their new rubber/silicone molded horn which supposedly seems to dampen the high frequencies to what i feel is an excellent, balanced level! Mids are excellent as well. Especially When Listening to solid male vocals such as michael buble, or even female vocals like Adele, you feel like you're in a concert. Their voices come across full-bodied and 'live', not tinny or recessed like most other speakers. Bass is also great for a bookshelf speaker. Driven directly the bass is just adequate to accompany the rest of the music spectrum, but after fiddling with my amp's SBX Bass boost feature, you can actually, almost go without a subwoofer and not miss much of the sound spectrum - while still being able to hit loud volumes. In my experience this speakers can actualy produce up to 40hz of sound, which is kind of great for a bookshelf speaker. Playing songs like Matsuri by kitaro, you can almost feel the drums as they are being hit. You could even play 'faded - oasis trap remix' and love the amount of bass being output by the bookshelf speakers alone. But bassheads would obviously want a sub to give the powerful, room shaking, chest pounding kind of bass. I'm one of those that loves room-shaking bass so Still let my sub handle most of the bass notes. Sound separation is also really excellent and you can almost make out all the details in the song mix. The sound signature is balanced and none of the highs/mids/lows ever felt overpowering. Most of the time i'd find myself grinning in amazement of the sound - these actually do better than my really old NAD floorstanding speakers (at least mids and high wise). But in once in a tiny while, i notice the nuances and echoes aren't exactly easy to make out. Compared to my triple-balanced armature earpiece, when playing the intro of "don't let me down-illenium remix", I can't make out the echoes of the vocals as clearly as i would have wanted - the echo effect is definitely there but not really pronounced. But given how well the speakers produce the whole sound spectrum and it's efficiency, it's a tiny nitpick that i'd be willing to overlook - I love the concert like, yet balanced sound that these speakers produce. Oh, did I mention the magnetic grilles are a nice extra touch? You can't see any ugly bolts or knuts that secure the speaker drivers either - these have all been hidden by the rubber horns (which are supposed to help with sound dispersion as well). The bronze cera-metallic drivers against the black front baffle, looks awesome and i love going without the grilles every once in a while (although i put them back on when they are not in use). The frequent removing and adding back of the grilles are made really easy by the magnetic grille. The Cherry colour of the speaker sides also look to be well finished as well. Overall I don't regret buying this speaker. Although they are definitely not for computer desks, and definitely way oversized for my table, these speakers sound really excellent and I found myself making way for them. Will these replace my floorstanders? Well, they actually could. Maybe in time to come, we''ll see. I'm seriously impressed at how much great sound i'm getting for the price - This is THE speaker to get! Sidenote: I bought these pair of speakers from Fique. Really good customer service and they were willing to answer all my queries quickly. Product was shipped out almost on the same day (although it seems, UPS took it's time to deliver it). Great experience with this third party seller! ... show more

  • Good Buy
I have a lot of Klipsch speakers( RP-280's,RP 450c,CTD 5800-CII, and R 120SW) and these are on par with the rest of mine. I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I do like my music crisp & clear, not muddy or noisy. They sound pretty good as I use them for surround speakers. haven't heard them by themselves, will try eventually. ... show more

  • Good Sound; Blend Very Well with Reference II
I use these speakers as rears in a surround setup with RF-82 II's in the front and an RC-62 II in the center. They blend very well with the reference II line and overall they sound very good. Even though these do have 90 x 90 horns I do not think they have a much bigger vertical sweet spot than the 90 x 60 horns in the Reference II's. You definitely have to have these at or slightly above ear height for them to deliver good sound (and staging). I actually like the way the Reference II's look better, but these certainly don't look bad (though I do think the Klipsch logo on the grills is a bit too large). In doing comparison tests, I had a very hard time telling the difference between these and the RC-62 II in the mid to high range - they were almost indistinguishable, which I was very happy about seeing as how I was using them both in the same 5.1 setup. These are superior to the RC-62 II for bass though - bass is much better and fuller in these (which I expected given that the RC-62 II is a center channel design), and the blend from the low-mid into the mid-high (crossing over from the woofer to the tweeter) sounded smoother in these. When it came to comparing these to the RF-82 II's, there were no surprises on the low end: the RF-82 II's were vastly superior. On the mid to high end, however, I was surprised to find that I much preferred the RF-82 II's to the RP-160M's. Even though the horns in the Reference Premieres are supposed to be a big improvement over the Reference II's, I definitely heard it the other way around. This could be due to the larger horns (same diameter tweeter though) in the RF-82 II's over the RP-160M's (and the RC-62 II's). I'm guessing if Klipsch made an RP-180M (follow-on to the RB-81 II) they would likely sound almost indistinguishable in the mid to high (just like the same size horns in the RP-160M and RC-62 II), but they don't. In any case I was quite surprised by what a big difference the larger horns made, especially since they have the same size tweeters (and supposedly the RP's have some improvements in the tweeter driver over the RII's). I don't have the RB-61 II's, but based on all my listening observations described above, I'm guessing that the RP-160M's would be almost indistinguishable from the RB-61 II's... In any case, I like the way they sound (they sound like Klipschs!) and they blend very well with the Reference II's. ... show more

  • BANG YOUR HEAD
I consider myself a budget audio enthusiast. My spare bedroom closet is filled with budget minded audio equipment, to my wife's dismay. :) I'm a metal head through and through so I knew I couldnt go wrong with Klipsch. Paired them Fosi DA-2120 and I'm in hard rock heaven. Crisp, detailed highs and tight, punchy bass will rock your socks off. I use these for music listening only in a 2.1 setup and couldn't be happier. Construction quality is top notch, no flaws anywhere. I'm a rustic kinda guy so I find the cherry finish beautiful. Highly recommended. ... show more
