  • Very useful to have!
This comes with the splitter, a little booklet and a safety cover for the blade. This is a nice looking splitter. It is small, not too heavy and seems to be well constructed. The bottom has holes that you can use to mount this if you wanted to. This is really handy for keeping next to the fireplace to split kindling for starting the fire. This will also be useful to keep next to the grill/firepit during the warmer months and since it isn't very large or heavy, it is easily moved around. The blade is sharp enough that you are able to split small pieces of wood with minimal effort. The price seems fair for the functionality that this provides along with the long life that this splitter should have. This would be very useful for anyone that needs to start fires with smaller pieces. A very helpful addition to our log cabin, looks great next to the fireplace, serves a useful purpose and makes life a bit easier. A great find! Very pleased with this splitter! ... show more

  • Works okay, but not very sharp.
This splitter works pretty well. Since it is very heavy it stays in place. You place a piece of wood on it and hit it with a sledge or a heavy, strong hammer. I can be mounted, but I just use it on an old piece of patio stone. I wish the blade was a bit sharper--it is pretty dull. It still works but I think if sharpened it would be better. It comes with a blade "protector" that looks like it is cut from a roll of cheap rubber (tire-like) material. I appreciate the idea, but the protector falls off pretty easily. ... show more

  • Useful, sure... but also great as decorative rustic piece for the fireplace
I love all things cast iron. It's just so rustic and real. Nice and heavy like cast iron should be. Love the detail and decorativeness of the design. I admit that I got this more for display and less for usefulness. The blade isn't what I'd call sharp. But it definitely does work for splitting kindling just as it is meant. There are a few spots in the iron that are sharp (like little burrs) and will need sanded down so it doesn't cut fingers/hands upon handling it. No big deal...but worth mentioning. Overall, I love the look and it's great to have a functional item that is also full of rustic charm. ... show more

  • Well-Crafted Tool. Mount for Safety.
This is a very well-made and very handy tool to have if you have to (get to!) make fires. Splitting kindling with an ax or hatchet can be a dicey task, especially if the wood is hard. This splitter makes the job possible when it might not be otherwise. I do recommend mounting this tool close to the ground on something very solid - screws are included. I have also sharpened the "blade" using a grinder and it worked extremely well. ... show more

  • Nice steady base and great for kindling
Used this mainly for making kindling from small logs, and it works exactly like I hoped. The base is sturdy and doesn't wobble, which helps a lot when you're putting a little force behind the wood. I’ve been using a mallet with it and haven’t had any issues. It’s not some flimsy gimmick piece—feels solid and holds up to regular use. It really shines for breaking down pieces that would be a pain with a full axe. If you're doing a lot of fires and want kindling without the hassle, this definitely makes the process easier. I wouldn't try to tackle big logs with it, but for what it's designed for, it does the job well. Simple but effective ... show more

  • Perfect for splitting small chunks of wood into smaller pieces
I have an electric smoker that only uses ~3oz per smoke so I needed a way to split small chunks of wood into smaller pieces. This is absolutely perfect for my application. But, I certainly wouldn't want to be trying to split seasoned long oak splits into smaller kindling with this as it's a little light weight. Maybe green soft wood might work with this? As further reference, I also have the heavier expensive competitor to this (the one with the extra round ring on top to hold a log steady) and it, too, has a hard time with splitting oak splits into smaller kindling. The extra ring on that one prevents me from easily splitting short chunks, which is why I bought this smaller "ringless" one. ... show more

  • It's okay if you don't smash your hand trying to use it.
It’s a solid little splitter and the cast iron feels durable, but it takes more force than I expected to push the wood through. I don't really get how this is useful when you need to hold the log with one hand and smack it with the other. Feels a little risky to me. Doesn't come with a sledge.

  • Great log splitter
This kindling splitter has been a great addition to my firewood setup. It’s made of solid cast iron, so it has that heavy, durable feel that stays stable while you’re working. I like that it’s truly a no-axe tool—just set the wood on top and tap it through, and it splits cleanly without much effort. The wedge point grabs the log well, which makes the splitting feel safe and controlled instead of awkward or dangerous. The included safety cover is also handy for storing it without worrying about anyone bumping into the blade. Overall, it’s simple, sturdy, and genuinely makes kindling prep a lot easier. ... show more
