  • A great basic, more affordable, and entry kindle
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
This is my first kindle. I've been a "love the feeling of the page turning" kind of gal forever. But lately I've noticed I'm reading less and it's because transporting books is difficult. They're big/heavy, so you have to limit your selections. Whichever one I pick to bring somewhere often ends up being the one I don't want to read and instead I wish I brought the other ones. My love of reading surpasses my love of feeling the page turning. So I began thinking about an e-reader. During prime day, these go on sale so I got this model, the cheapest and most basic one, just to try it out. I'll say that the kindle subscription is actually fairly nice, and when setting up the kindle, take advantage of the free trial (whether or not you choose to continue it, it's nice to have for free). My trial is 3 months long, but I believe this varies depending on the current deals. I also got a month free for audible with two book credits, even though I'm not a new member to audible. I thought this was really cool, and all these free trials/books nearly offset the cost of the kindle. So far I love this kindle. It's REALLY lightweight, which I appreciate. It's responsive. When the kindle is in sleep mode, you can choose to have the book you're currently reading as the sleep mode Lock Screen, which is a thoughtful touch and makes it feel more book-like. The screen is truly anti-glare. I live in Alaska and it's summer so the sun is about 10ft away from me around 4pm. And still no glare. The anti-glare screen also does have a nice feel, reminiscent of paper. Turning the kindle on takes no more than a few seconds. It's not instant like most devices now, but it's by no means slow. Also while reading you can look up words, which is a nice feature to have while reading more difficult texts and expanding your vocabulary. Lastly a pro that has to be mentioned is that you can borrow library ebooks/audiobooks from the app libby, and send them to your kindle. These books are free and will return on their own once your reservation period is up. There's wait times for some so leave notifications on so you don't miss the books you've waited months for. All of this is in other reviews so I'll skip to the downsides of this basic model. 1) there's no dark mode. I didn't even think about this not being a feature when I ordered. I wrongfully assumed that by now, all new devices would have dark mode. But this device does not. There will only be white page with black text. I've read about dark mode with e-readers and overall even devices with the dark mode feature leave the user wanting more. I guess the anti-glare screen technology makes it difficult to also have a crisp/clear dark mode? But I'm no expert, this is just what I've seen in my research. Now although there's no dark mode, I do find that I can read this at night in bed in the dark. The brightness levels can be turned down so low that it's not straining on the eyes. The lower brightness settings also seem to have a warmer tone to the white background which is helpful when reading at night also. 2) if you do anything but read, the navigation is fairly slow and not intuitive. this device is great as an e-reader, that's what it was built for is to only load a page once in a while. loading web graphics quickly? not so much. the video I've attached shows a reference of the navigation while reading & turning pages. TL;DR this is a very simple e-reader but has all the things to make it a great one. ... show more

  • One of the best purchases I've ever made. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
I wanted to wait a while before I reviewed this, and it's been 5 months now. I got very motivated to buy this when I was wanting to read more and was on a minimalist kick, but after I bought it, I started second guessing myself. I mean, I spent almost $100 on a device that will let me read books I still have to buy anyways? But it's been almost half a year and I have come to absolutely love this thing. The battery is incredible and can last me a week or two on one charge. Thankfully, books are generally cheaper than if you bought them physically, and with Prime Reading there are tons of free books. There's plenty of storage, I doubt I'll ever have to worry about it. The only real setback is that it is very old technology still being implemented. It's not a digital screen, think of it like a calculator screen with way more pixels. So the responsiveness to touch is kinda slow. But for most of the time, it doesn't negatively effect your reading. I was, for a while, beginning to think that I should just become a purist and only buy physical books. You won't get the same experience on a Kindle as you will with a physical book. There's no pages to turn, no colored cover to look at, no book smell. But I've come to learn that the quality of the text itself is the only thing that matters. You're not reading the feel, color, and smell of a book. I think the sheer convenience of a Kindle is unmatched. For example, the picture above shows that I was reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I bought all of the Narnia books on Kindle in a bundle for $6 on sale. I have all of the Narnia books as one collective book physically, and it's gigantic. On the Kindle, they're all there, but it's just the Kindle. Take it anywhere. It literally fits in most of my side pockets. If you can swing the money, I definitely recommend for avid readers who are seeking a more minimalist approach. ... show more

  • Perfect Basic E-reader
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
I love my kindle, would highly recommend if you're even thinking about one! I got my kindle for the sole purpose of reading Fanfiction. I got tired of reading from my phone for numerous reasons and these are also the positives of a Kindle. 1-battery life of my phone was TERRIBLE, I was charging multiple times a day, just to read for 4 hours. -the kindle can last over a week on one charge, depending on your setting etc 2-Storage on my phone, I read BIG fics, novel length. I also like finding more to read while I'm currently reading one, but to have a long list of TBR that might be pulled by the author got confusing and daunting. -My Kindle has over 300 fanfics and 30+ normal "books" and I'm just now reaching 5 gb of storage used. 3-The size of the Kindle is light and easy to hold, when you add a cover the weight difference is noticeable, even if its very small difference. 4-The Kindle is so easy on my eyes compared to my phone, the lighting difference is noticeable, and if the "blue screen" bothers you, this will be a huge improvement! 5-No distractions, I hated it when a notification would pop up on my phone and interrupt my reading, not that I don't want to be notified, but not when I'm reading. It's so nice to just be able to read and not have texts or facebook distracting me! Negatives: 1-It isn't waterproof, but I don't usually plan on submerging my electronics in water. Any little splashes that have hit it have not effected it. 2-You have to pay for book advertisements to not appear on your screen when it's asleep. The ads don't pop up while your reading EVER, they are only on the screen when it is asleep. Even if you pay the 20$ for no ads, you still have a screen saver that is constantly on when asleep. 3-As I stated above, covers add to the weight of the Kindle, but it doesn't mean I don't want one! Cover options for the basic Kindle are slim and its disappointing. ... show more

  • A lightweight reader that delivers the essentials
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
A lightweight reader that delivers the essentials I’ve owned several Kindles over the years, and this 2019 model with the built-in front light is still one of my favorites. The size and weight make it easy to slip into a bag or even hold comfortably in one hand for long stretches. The glare-free screen really does mimic paper, and with the adjustable light, I can read just as easily in bed at night as I can outdoors in bright sunlight. Battery life is excellent—I can go weeks without charging, even with regular nightly reading. Eight gigabytes of storage is more than enough for hundreds of books, and anything else is always accessible in the cloud. Pairing with Bluetooth headphones for Audible is a nice touch too, making it easy to switch between listening and reading. The screen resolution (167 ppi) isn’t as sharp as the Paperwhite, and images or very fine text aren’t quite as crisp. For straight reading, though, it’s perfectly fine—I rarely notice the difference. It’s not waterproof like some higher-end models, so this isn’t the Kindle you’ll want to bring poolside. But the tradeoff is a device that’s smaller, lighter, and less expensive, which makes it especially appealing for everyday reading. Bottom line: If you want an affordable, reliable e-reader that covers the basics very well—front light, long battery, portability—this Kindle is a great choice. If you need waterproofing or a sharper display, consider stepping up to the Paperwhite. ... show more

  • Very Good!
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
This product has worked really well so far. The light is easy on the eyes and as my friend said when she saw me using it: “It actually looks like a book page!” (A very important factor among Bookworms.) I originally bought this because I was going to be flying a bunch this summer and last summer I might have gone over the 50 lbs. checked bag limit with 6-8 books in my bag. This kindle is very lightweight and fits into my bags (purses and backpacks alike!) easily. It is only in black and white (so comic books or illustrations wont have any color), and the touchscreen is on the slower side when using it for anything other than reading. But I can highlight as well as look words on google, Wikipedia, and google translate by just holding down on the word or phrase. The battery life can last for days at a time and charging time is fairly quick. I decided to go cheap, so I have the ad version, which involves a lot of ads of books which shirtless 30 yr old men on the cover. Long story short, very glad I have a case to hide the ads, but also cases are essential or you might crack it when throwing it into a bag. Anyway, a very good purchase and kindle unlimited makes it much better. :) ... show more

  • All the important features most people need at a low price. All the important features most people need at a low price.
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
My last kindle is a Kindle keyboard or Kindle Gen 3 which cost $139 in 2012. This one is a Gen 10 which cost less than half of that during a sales. When I first opened the package, this 10th gen looks so tiny I am afraid it may be unusable, but the screen measures the same size (6") as my Kindle 3, so the experience should be at least the same or better. Considering that it now now has a front lit light, a touch screen, support for bluetooth audio (for audiobooks), it supports nearly everything most people will need it for. 8GB is more than enough for a few hundred books + a few large audio books which I will read or listen to at any period. Since the rest of the library are on the amazon cloud and can be downloaded when needed, larger storage is not really necessary. Compared to the Paperwhite (2018 version) which is the next step up in price, I don’t really notice the difference in the resolution (167dpi vs 300 dpi) for most text based books (novels, for dummies books, etc) unless looking at very small fonts or images, so it is really a non issue. And I almost never use a kindle in places where it needs to be waterproof, so waterproofing is never an issue too. Plus, the large bezels of the 2018 paperwhite looks dated. The 10th gen Kindle has slimmer bezels , is smaller, lighter and so looks more modern in my opinion. To me, this 10th gen kindle is like having the paperwhite in a more modern package (also at a lower price :) ) What I wish this 10 gen Kindle has is the white text on black background mode (the paperwhite and higher models have this). I use this mode on my Kindle app on iPad all the time in bed. With lights off, the white texts on black background is easier on the eyes. This is an accessibility issue (for people with eye problems) so Amazon should put the feature on all kindle versions, not just the higher priced ones. Another feature that can be improved is the landscape mode. When viewing some figures or texts, landscape mode makes reading more convenient. However, the landscape mode on this 10th gen kindle rotates the book by 90 degrees anti-clockwise only, meaning I have to rotate the kindle clockwise to read the texts. The larger bottom bezels will be on the left so naturally this forces me to use my left hand to hold it. But most people are right handers, including myself, so it will be better if Amazon will add a “rotate” feature so users can rotate the book so that the bottom bezels be on the right for right handers. I believe you have to upgrade to the Oasis at 3 times the price to get an auto rotate feature that orient the book that way in landscape, which is crazy expensive for such a basic feature. Anyway, 5 stars for this 10 gen kindle for its excellent value, other than the small ergonomic shortcomings. ... show more

  • Practical upgrade for intensive PDFs
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
I purchased a used Nook (1st generation, with microSD slot) back in 2014 for around $32. At the time it was a deal, since e-readers still cost a lot of money, and I wanted a decent one under $50. The e-reader was amazing in that it truly had a long battery life- over a month and close to 2 if lightly used. I was able to read several books and the difference was night and day compared to when reading on a laptop or tablet with a backlight. Eventually, I wanted to be able to read some larger PDF files that involved scanned documents with pen marks, things that I didn't want an OCR (optical recognition reader) to omit in simplified but clean font options. I wanted a basic pdf viewer, similar to a desktop PC. Two of the main advantages the Kindle (front light, 10th gen) is that it has an option for landscape and portrait rotation (not 360, but 180 is fine), which allows me to zoom into an 8.5"x11 page and essentially read 1/2 at a time, at a font not too small nor large, and with a contrast enhanced with the features. Of course, if it is a scanned document, the page may have faded page and ink, which does seem to require more processing power (and lower battery life), because i have to use a combination of the front light, high or low contrast toggling (which in itself uses battery), and occasional dragging of the page to scroll. I do wish the margins would lock in one axis once i lock it, because it seems to use more refreshes (and again battery) to scroll across one screen. However, for $45 which I paid for a used: acceptable, though like new Kindle, I consider these obstacles not insurmountable. The battery life, with wifi turned off and a minimal backlight 2-30 % (or in daylight when 0 is needed), is also acceptable, and I only saw it deplete fairly slowly after 30 minutes of use- about 3-7%. That said, it will not last all day if one were intensively scrolling through hundreds of scanned medium resolution pdfs (these files are over 50MB and can't be reduced much more, nor would that be desireable), however I feel the documents that I read will only be read for short 2-3hr spans at a time, leaving plenty of time to recharge the battery from 70 or 80% back to 99%. In conclusion, I bought a device designed almost 10 years after the one I had, and those improvements (especially the front light, which can be turned off if not needed), give it enough functionality to operate as a virtual computer without all the wires, backlights and distractions. 11 stars out of 10. ... show more
