  • An Overlooked Classic
When people talk about Fleetwood Mac, you always have to ask "Which one?". My experience is that the vast majority of people who know about and like Fleetwood Mac are those who were introduced to the band's music in the mid-70s when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined and helped make the band a huge commercial success. But there are many other incarnations of this legendary group that went from playing very basic blues in the late 1960s to an alternative rock style in the early 1970s to a mid-70s supercharged commercial rock and roll and on to final exhaustion thereafter with a torrent of tepid pop. Kiln House is an overlooked classic that marks the band's transition with the departure of Peter Green from being an acclaimed Brit-blues group to a much tighter alt-rock group. On this CD, you will hear Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer in the full efflorescence of their musical talents. There are yet traces of the old blues machine here but the new sound grabs the listener's attention from the start. I own this on vinyl, and it had been years since I listened to it. But when I finally got around to hearing Kiln House again, it struck me as being even better than I thought it was when I was a kid. One thing about the CD format which makes it superior to vinyl is that the listener feels compelled to give equal time to the entire recording as he/she does not have to turn a record over. When I was young, I always liked the first side of Kiln House better and did not give the last five songs the eartime they deserved. Now I enjoy the entire recording. My favorites here are: This Is The Rock and Blood On The Floor, which both give a sophisticated nod to the style of the late 1950s, the bluesy and hard-driving Station Man, the exhilarating Hi-Ho Silver, the instrumental workout Earl Gray, the hard-rocking Tell Me All The Things You Do, and the romantic Mission Bell. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan and haven't heard Kiln House, then I recommend you get it soon. Even though it has yet to be remastered, it sounds great. I own or have heard most of the official releases of Fleetwood Mac from the band's earliest days right up to the point where they began to drown in their own hype, and in retrospect, Kiln House shines as one of their best. ... show more

  • Great tweener! My favorite Mac album.
Between Peter Green and Stevie Nicks---No long, windy history here of who stayed or who left and why...doesn't really matter; what matters is that this album rocks, regardless. Station Man is a strong song that'll stick in your head and pester you to replay it often! I remember getting this album, loving it, loaning it, and never seeing it again until I got the CD last week, 35 years later! I was thrilled to find out how well this album has sustained. I was a big Fleetwood Mac fan until they sold out and became commercial...good for them...I even liked some of the later works, never bought any of the "chick" albums, but enjoyed a lot of the music. But this transition album is special. If you like old fashion rock and roll, you'll love this album. "Hi Ho Silver" has made it to a couple movie sound tracks--and that isn't even the best song on the album. This is a strong, ageless album with a little basic rock and roll, a little basic blues, a touch of C & W, and lots of bounce! $8.97 is almost 1970 prices! Spend the money--great price for a quality album like this. ... show more

  • Second Best Fleetwood Mac album, behind Then Play On. Only then, Rumours.
"Then Play On" signaled a big transition for Fleetwood Mac. Purchasing Kiln House with Peter Green gone was a scary prospect, but the album delivered at the time and, like its predecessor, continues to delight today. The two are distinctly different with Kiln House playing to a 50s Buddy Holly vibe that doesn't parody, but emulates the sound. Danny Kirwan's "Tell Me All the Things You Do" had to originate during the Then Play On sessions. You're back there at the opening notes and propelled deeper by the bridge. That the band could continue to function eventually absent Green, Kirwan, and Spencer is a miracle of (at the time) modern music. Then Play On and Kiln House are my favorite Fleetwood Mac albums. Always have been and (I expect, at age 66, now) always will be. Recently gifting a college grad with vinyls of both -- they continue to please the discerning. ... show more

  • Criminally overlooked offering from The Mac
This release is admittedly a mixed-bag of musical styles, so it took some getting used to for a Led Zeppelin-Black Sabbath-Deep Purple head-banger like me. Regardless, it's one of those records that just grows and grows on you then sticks in your mind and just stays there for decades. I've never gotten over this LP. "Jewel Eyed Judy" was all over the airwaves in 1970. I remember being absolutely transfixed by it, as well as the album's other standout cuts, "Station Man" and "Tell Me All The Things You Do." In 1970 and 1971 I played this album incessantly, got pissed off that it was so short (34 minutes), threw glassware across the room, and demanded that all of my friends listen to it. When I found out that tickets for this particular Fleetwood Mac lineup were sold out for their show in Seattle, I knew that I'd missed out on something special that would never, ever be seen or heard again, and shook my fist at heaven like a damned soul. If ever there was a record, bypassed by stupidity or ignorance, by corporate short-sightedness or whatever, that deserved the deluxe digipack treatment with a second CD of jams, rehearsals, outtakes, and live versions, "Kiln House" is it. These four guys apparently smoked quite a lot of hash during the recording of this album. I do not approve of that kind of behavior. I have no doubt that the band were self-indulgent, and quite impaired when they recorded this, but at the end of the day they delivered the goods, didn't they? Also, I still believe they must have laid down a wealth of backup material that is still sitting in the vaults. ... show more

  • Great music from a rare Fleetwood Mac lineup
Only album where Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer both play guitar throughout. Hard to find CD. I feel lucky to have found it on Amazon . Seller didn't gouge and although used , it looks brand new. Great music.

  • Station Man!
The best track on this old Fleetwood Mac is "Station Man" with its infectious guitar riff. The rest of the album is pretty darn good and has actually gotten better with the passage of time. By the time this was recorded, Peter Green had departed taking with him a blues accent. What is left behind is a slightly country-sounding, early rock and roll, slightly rockabilly sound. Station Man itself is a reason to get this record, and the rest is also good listening. ... show more

  • First post Peter Green effort of Fleetwood Mac is solid
I had Kiln House 50 years ago when it first came out as an LP. It was the first effort of Fleetwood Mac after founder Peter Green departed. It shows off nicely the talents and strengths of the other personnel in the band, particularly Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer, both of whom shine on this recording. This album has more of a pop sound, rather than the bluesy sound of the earlier recordings. It is also, I believe, the first time Christine Perfect (later known as Christine McVie) is credited as a member of the group. Spencer and Kirwan both left the group over the next year or two as Fleetwood Mac finally evolved into its ultimate supergroup lineup. ... show more
