  • Fiddly, but not too fiddly
Style: Fine
As other reviews stated, this honing guide is a work of art. Very well made. As to the fiddlyness of it, two things. I think it is easy enough to square a chisel in the guide by eye, but you can check squareness with a small square (picture #1). Remember, hand honers also square their chisels by eye. Secondly, based on previous reviews, I soldered a nut to a fender washer to increase the area of contact between the blade and the set screw (picture #2). Seems to work well. You do really have to crank down the set screw so the chisel doesn't pivot. That would be my only complaint. I'm guessing some kind of anti-slip material between the washer and the chisel would solve that problem. Worked great on an out of square, banged up old chisel. UPDATE: while working on a wide plane iron, I noticed that cranking down the set screw caused the iron to deflect in the middle. I fixed that problem by leaving the chip breaker attached. That provided enough lateral stiffness to keep the iron from deflecting. Absent a chip breaker, using another plane iron in its place would probably work as well. ... show more

  • seems like it will work
Style: Fine
I have only unboxed this so far so i'll comment on what i can. It came securely packaged. It's larger than i expected, which i think is probably a good thing. It feels incredibly durable and heavy and rugged. Finish on the wood handles is quite orange and not impressive but that's okay as long as they don't break off after a few uses. Simple mechanism and operation. The only concern i have is that the blade is secured with only one large set screw, which seems so far like it might present the potential for your blade/chisel to swivel slightly on the stone and produce a rounded edge. Again, haven't had a chance to test it yet but after fitting a blade in there it seems like it could happen if you aren't careful when sharpening. Might be possible to put a couple of those large clamping set screws with slightly smaller knobs, instead of just one? or perhaps drill three holes and include two set screw knobs, so you can do one centered clamping screw for small work pieces and two clamping set screws for larger work pieces. ;) send me one when you update the design! ... show more

  • Should have bought this day one... 6 years ago.
Style: Fine
I am able to put on a keen edge with just my hand, the chisel/blade and the stones, but the very little imperceptible inconsistencies in my hand movements lead to longer polishing times. This is a simple tool that does it job, is easy to use, accurate and allows you to maintain a fine edge every damn time. Put down your ego, and use this so you can focus on what you really enjoy doing. ... show more

  • Terrible for fine work.
Style: Fine
Absolute trash, there is no good way to properly set a chisel in this device and it stay there. On top of that every time you try to tighten down it changes position, And there's nothing to stop whatever you're sharpening for moving left to right it just pivots. There are no instructions if there were some secret way to do it. If you are after any time of precision this is not the product for you. ... show more

  • It works but…
Style: Fine
So first, this helped me greatly by using the long guide roller. Not so good it there is 1 no way to reference square on this product. And 2 the hold down lug is just a screw. For most applications this is fine however if you are sharping a plane blade with a hole for the adjustment screw, you will have to Jerry rig something to make it work. ... show more

  • Clever idea for a chisel jig
Style: Fine
Sharpening chisels without a jig is pretty much a guarantee its gonna get destroyed. I tried freehanding it before, and there is absolutely no way to keep the angle the same throughout the sharpening process. This guide/jig is pretty simple, insert a chisel, the farther you insert it, the shallower the angle will be, so it is adjustable. Then screw the handle in to hold the blade in place and start sharpening. My only issue with this jog was that the screw handle puts pressure on the blade in one tiny spot, and as you move the chisel back and forth, you have enough leverage to accidentally pivot it around the screw, which can destroy the chisel. I cranked it pretty tight and didn’t have that issue, but its a possibility ... show more

  • Useful for holding the angle correctly, but...
Style: Fine
The only issue I had was the clamp. The end of the clamp is simply medal screw cut-off. The chisel will slip out of place when you start tightening the clamp. You have to put a lot of effort into holding the chisel firmly against the base so it doesn't move when you clamp it into place. However, the ergonomics of the product is great once you have the Chisel perfectly in position. ... show more
